GAME SUMMARY

Avernum: Escape From the Pit

Rating: 4.5 (106 votes cast)

You have been banished to the underworld, never to see the light of day again.

The surface is ruled by the cruel Emperor Hawthorne, master of the Empire. All of the known lands are subject to his brutal command. Everyone who speaks out, who misbehaves, who doesn’t fit in is cast into the dark, volcanic pits of Avernum, far below the surface. There, you are expected to die, a victim of starvation, horrible monsters, or simple despair.

But not all of the Avernites have surrendered. With magic and steel, they are forging a new nation deep underground. You can join them and fight for safety. Or freedom. Or even, if you dare, revenge on the surface-worlders who tried to destroy you.

Avernum: Escape From the Pit features:

  • Epic fantasy adventure in an enormous underworld.
  • Huge outdoors and eighty towns and dungeons.
  • Three separate game-winning quests. Seek safety, escape or revenge. Do just one of them or all three!
  • Unique races and settings make Avernum different from any adventure out there.
  • Dozens of side quests and hundreds of magical artifacts.
  • Rich game system with over 50 spells and battle disciplines and a multitude of beneficial character traits to choose from.

Avernum: Escape From the Pit review

By Gatts13 posted 20th April

I followed Avernum series for many years, what I missed first, was absent selection of races (only human), but otherwise you get powered up UI and game options, great graphics (well, isometric and pixel-like, but still great) Story is nothing less but noghing more, than you would expect from Spiderweb Soft, if you played at least one of their games. Its developing, gives quite some ways of branching and of course tons of text to read, for all old-school RPG gamers its totally a MUST to have. Can you play a game whithout narrated dialogues and 3D graphics? Are you more for story, even if you have to read text pop-up windows, instead brainless killing? Do you prefer huge world where you totally should make your own notes on paper to remember what dungeon still has unbroken magical barrier hiding great tresures or spells? This is game for you. Don't expect that the game will guide you through each quest like some new-brain-less games do... stay sharp and read each single sentence carefully, don't hesitate to draw your own map (although the game gives much more in-game notes, as in your journal, so in the map, that you access with "w" key) and make your own notes, especially when accepting quests, write down names and towns, will help you track them. And there are many quests and not all are needed to complete this game. What saddens me a lot, there is level cap 30 and attribute cap 40. Why? Well, maybe it's not fun when your heroes are overpowered, but not gaining levels after maxing them out takes some fun from the game. At least you can still make your own way through the game, will you join Empire, Scimitar or follow neutral path advised by king Micah.. king ruling over endless dungeons full of savages? Choices remain all yours. Great game indeed!

Played Exile many years ago and loved it, so when I come across this the latest follow up for a cheap price I just had to get it! This game has everything that matters for fans of the genre, yes the graphics aren't exactly mind blowing but in my experience that's not what matters with this type of game, plus this makes it playable for people like myself who aren't running super computers. Huge world to explore, hours and hours of game play, and an intriguing storyline with lots of side quests. If your a fan of RPG/Strategy this is definitely worth a look.

Great classic gameplay, but that is to be expected from Spiderweb software! Second modernization of the first Exile game, firs remade into the original Avernum, and now remade once more in the Avadon engine, allowing it to be also playable on Ipad, apparently. Would not know, only have the PC version. If you enjoy Avadon, you WILL enjoy Avernum greatly. While it is not the most graphically impressive title, and it will not win any awards in sound, the gameplay is extremely solid, and well worth investing time into it. Honestly, I enjoyed it more than Dragon Age, which felt like it wanted to be a third Baldur's Gate, but was nowhere near as engaging.

if you can get past the dated graphics, it is an absolute jewel. Very recommended.

This is a great game for one who loves turn-based RPGs. You get to create a party with whatever skills you want; there's no restriction there!

The game world is massive, and it will take quite a while to complete the game if you decide to do everything.

The interface is somewhat hard to get used to, but that doesn't stop it from ruining fun.

As for the difficulty, you'll probably have trouble starting out, then the game will get a bit easier. Then you'll face a bit more challenge soon after. The game has some variety to keep battles fresh.

Finally, if you're really, really stuck, it has a built-in character editor. Thankfully, the game gives you a chance to turn back before using it!

Avernum is a tricky one. I've enjoyed SpiderWeb games for a while now and it's nice to see an updated reboot of the Avernum series with some of the improvements seen in Avadon. There is still a lot lacking in UI and usability unfortunately, but it's much improved overall and so much is made up by the story and freedom given in the game.

If you can fight past the slightly cumbersome interface and get used to the control system, things become fluid enough that it's easy to engage with the story. Which is varied and interesting. So stick with it - unless you can't bear to think of Avadon's UI in which case you might have to wait and hope...

Grand Old-school Party RPG

By LeonLayer posted 17th April 2012

Avernum: Escape from the pit is one of those typical old-school party based RPGs.

To start with the obvious: Graphics and sound effects are (in comparison to any 'modern' game) as poor as you might have thought, yet they are sufficient; as Sid Meier said: the game doesn't take place in your Computer, but in your mind.

Apart from that, everything is as good as you can wish: the world and its rich lore (btw. you schpuld really read the tooltip of towels :P), grand towns and deep dungeons, numerous (very well done) enemies, treasures. The quest are good, the levelling system is simple to understand, yet offers a lot of different options to develop your characters, et cetera, et cetera...

So all in all: If you look for a good RPG with all that belongs to that and have no need for over-fancy graphics, this is your game (especially at this low price) - 5/5

Avernum: Escape From the Pit is another great RPG game with an engaging story and well-written dialog. If you have played some of the previous titles, especially Avadon: Black Fortress then you most likely know what to expect. Do not be deceived by the graphics - they are beautiful and the enormous world is full of life and activity.

If you give this title a go, have in mind that what you will find is a profound experience not only in terms of the story but also in terms of the unique gameplay (the fighting and the RPG system are very deep). A big plus is that you can play this game in high, widescreen resolutions.

Avernum: Escape From the Pit is well worth your money especially if you take into considerations that it is a very long game (over 30 hours), with a lot of text and non-linear, branching story line.

A remake of the original Avernum on their current engine, this title does not disappoint. If you're looking for a tactical cRPG with a large world and you can get immersed in the detail, look no further. Right on Spiderweb Software's page you can download a pretty lengthy demo which is always nice. If you're looking for a game with combat like Fallout 1 & 2, but in a different setting, check this out.

What a great game. If you're a fan of Ultima 7 style RPG's, check this one out. A great interface, a huge world to explore, unique monsters, settings, and lore. The User interface is what did it for me, easy to use and intuitive. The story is suited for people new to the Avernum world, like me. The gameplay is running quests, exploration, and turn based combat. About 6 hours in, half of those on the demo I downloaded from Spiderweb Software's site, the demo is huge apparently, played 3 hours and it was still going when I decided to go ahead and buy the game. My saves were there when I installed the copy I bought from Gamersgate.

Jeff Vogel delivers once again. As usual, this game is light on the graphics, heavy on the storytelling, but the game developer has recently hired a new graphical artist, so you can see at least a small improvement. Don't take that for granted, though; this is still not the most attractive looking game. Still, it has the classic strategic gameplay and open-ended world that Spiderweb Software is known for delivering. A good return to form after the relatively sub-par Avadon.
