Great Atmosphere

By tahlas posted 23rd April

A nice little game. The gameplay itself is good, but not spectacular. It has a decent amount of variation in both weapons/skills and enemies.

Decent story as well, without being groundbreaking.

What really makes this game, though, is the atmosphere. The artwork is crisp and interesting. But the audio is amazing, both the now famous Narrator but also the various songs are really great.

You'll be now reading this in narrator's voice.

One of the best indie games of the last few years, boy struggles through the floating world, completly alone, without any knowledge.

The narrator that narrates his life, may be the key to everything that's going on over there, but in the meanwhile, your protagonist is shooting, using magic, and discovering beautiful parts of the floating universe.

Great action game! Wonderfully produced, the narration is fantastic and gives the game a unique feeling, of course combined with the beautiful graphics. The game itself is fun, not too easy, not too hard, combines skills with some puzzles.

Great action game

By Jediloop posted 21st March

Bastion is one of the most fun and entertaining games I've ever played. It's an isometric action shoot-em up/beat-em up. The levels are varied, and each of them has its unique charm. The soundtrack is beautiful and it neatly combines with the game's climate and 'feel'. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone. Oh, and did I mention the Narrator? No? OK - the Narrator is awesome!

Not As Great As They Say

By Wootus posted 3rd December 2012

While Bastion is a good game, I was disappointed with it after reading all the articles and reviews that were singing praises about it. It's a pretty generic RPG when it comes down to it, but it's voice-over work is superb. The narrator really pulls you into the story but besides enhancing the narrative, doesn't really affect gameplay. The combat is simple, with only a few weapons available (for an RPG) and even fewer character customization options (almost none). There are also only a few skills to choose from. The art direction is wonderful and the way that the levels assemble themselves as you walk through them is unique.

This is a fun little aRPG that shows what good music and narration can add to a game. The art is fairly good and the advancement system is decent enough, the only real problem with it is the controls. The game has a lot of maneuvering and dodging and between the controls and the drop-in paths you will fall off edges.

A meaningful ending (or not, your choice)

By klatch posted 3rd October 2012

The game is a well done action RPG and starts off with a wonderfully executed narrative and a world that appears before your feet in a manner that works so well with the story. The game is filled with ways in which it makes simple mechanics, like the difficulty setting, the narrative, certain visual effects, another story feature. But it is the story itself that outshines all already outstanding features as it puts all pieces together near the endgame. I'm not going to spoil it any further and will only recommend it to those looking for an engaging story, action RPG, or game in general.

All of the aspects you could ask for in a twin-stick shooter (i.e. story, music, voice-acting, pacing, customization, game play mechanics) are executed perfectly in bastion. By utilizing a narrator the developers were able to tell the story in a way that felt like a natural part of the game. In addition to that, the story itself is very carefully considered in terms of the level of detail placed in each area and never verges into the inane.

Amazing game. Other titles that have tried on this narration style story-telling since Bastion's release (Diablo 3....) have come up well short in style and substance compared to the standards set here.

Not sure what the big hoopla is all about?

By rocketsurgeon posted 4th August 2012

It's not a bad game, if you like the genre, but after having read lots of glowing reviews I'm a bit... underwhelmed. The narration is pretty well done, but for me it got old. Same with the graphical gimmick of having the environs drop in.

More than a story about a Kid and his hammer...

By TNGpt posted 27th July 2012

I bought Bastion not expecting much from it and I was completely blown away by how gorgeous it looked without a need of a powerful computer, how well the story was told with just a narrator with a deep voice and nearly no cutscenes and how replaylable and enjoyable it can be although it is a linear adventure (branching out only at the end). The hero of the story, the Kid, can carry two weapons out of more than 10 scattered throughout the beautiful world of the Bastion that you can upgrade in different ways and with various special powers leading to diversity in the way you combat your enemies. There are also plenty of different potions or elixirs that give you various benefits and different idols that increase the difficulty of your journey and lead to higher rewards that, altogether, manage to keep the game fresh and add a bit of complexity to it. But do not let this scare you off; Bastion can be one of those "easy to get into, hard to master" kind of games becoming very hard if you wish or just stay at a casual level if that is your thing. Oh, and did I mention a very lovely soundtrack to go with it all?

Even though I did not think much of it at first, Bastion turned out to be a great find and a game that I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who is out to have a good time for a relatevily low price and enjoy a great, bittersweet story about a Kid and his quest to build a Bastion...

So, i haven't finished this game, and i'm glad, because i really like it and don't want it to end. The graphics are gorgeous, the music is beautiful, and even the narrator is likeable.

Also it is a really cheap game, and i even got it on a bargain, ja, it was really cheap, but still, it is worth the list price. I even got a second copy for my sister, and i listen to the soundtrack once in a while.

If you are looking for a simple game, with nice graphics and good soundtrack this is for you, EVEN if you don't have a powerful pc 'cause it is not a demanding game.

Finally, if i havwe some mispells or something is because english ain't my primary language, so please forgive me.

The game's, I suppose, most promising and most unique aspect is its narration. It's impressive in how it seems to be able to read the player, but if you're particularly enamored by it (I wasn't), then the game is good but nothing particular. For me at least, I found the gameplay well done but nothing amazing.

A marvelous and well paced game. Bastion provides a story and atmosphere that are both breathtaking and immersive. With an innovative difficulty system and interesting weapon customization it certainly warrants a second play through. The narrator and soundtrack also give a certain feeling that is impossible to describe unless you play it yourself (Soundtrack edition is recommended!). And for the price, you'd be crazy not to buy it.

This game combines creative mechanics with masterful storytelling and originality. A game that never got dull, even on the second time through, and allows you to fine-tune your combat style, difficulty and pace.

A MUST PLAY game for anybody who likes adventure games!

Excellent Indie Game

Really good take on an Action-RPG, and while short, the stunning visuals will surely keep most entertained for several playthroughs. If not the visuals, then the customizability. The game has a very interesting system with "spirits" - read drinks - and "weapons", along with a difficulty level that can be fine-tuned. A master piece.

Bastion is a great action-RPG game. Not only that, it's one of the best Indie games ever made.

The hand-painted graphics are fantastic. The hand-drawn style of graphics and lush, beautiful, and look amazing with high-resolution PC's.

What I really want to point out is even though it doesn't say it, Bastion here on Gamersgate does now come w/ the Stranger's Dream DLC content. So, if you bought the game early from here before the DLC came out, RE-DOWNLOAD the game - the file size is bigger and has the DLC with it!

Without sacrificing the gameplay, the story is being constantly told to you namely by The Narrator, as you go along and play the game. Literally, he doesn't stop. Much of the story is told through the Narrator - and the Narrator himself is fantastic.

Let's not forget - the soundtrack is fantastic. One of the best original soundtracks I've heard since Arcanum.

You could accuse this game of being style over substance, but wow - what style!

At its most basic, it's a simple walk and smash (or shoot) 'em up. What sets this game apart, though is the presentation.

The levels appear out of nowhere before your very feet. The whole game is narrated as you go, and the music is awesome - instantly ranked among the classic soundtracks of all time.

Just a fun, good time, with awesome looks and sound.

Among the best gaming experiences I've had

By Aelron27 posted 9th March 2012

Generally, games where you have to fight your way through foes to a boss are not my style of game. HOWEVER, every single other aspect of Bastion made up for this type of gameplay.

The narrator hooked me at the beginning of the game, even commenting when you make a mistake! :) The music fit perfectly, making me want to explore further and hear new sounds. And the artwork! Beautifully stylized hand-drawn work. As the plot twists start coming in the second half of the game, I admired the ethical decisions you have to make towards the end.

The weapon training grounds are nice mini-games, the "Who Knows Where" section provides interesting backstory to the characters. Plenty of unlockables! And in my albeit limited experience, I haven't before played a game with a level that is a montage!

Playing games once suite me fine -- with Bastion I've gone back to play New Game Plus Mode, which is a first for me. Okay, enough with the praise: this game is superb, so play it now!

True, you may get tired of falling off thin platforms or killing the same enemies over and over, but the narrator's comments and this intriguing world have a way of keeping you hooked.

Bastion review

By Haak0n posted 28th January 2012

The gameplay of Bastion is good. It's has some issues. The combat is a bit repetitive with not that much variation and not great enemy variety. It does however feel fairly smooth and quite solid. The weapons and their upgrades are perhaps not perfectly balanced, some weapons and upgrades definitely seem stronger than others which means there's only so many routes you can take and still be effective. Map design was overall good, with some rewards given for exploration and no incredibly annoying gimmicks that you had to deal with. It did feel a bit short, another couple of levels would certainly not have hurt. Although for this price it is what you might expect. It adds some replayability by having customizable difficulty that can be ramped up a bunch, and after you completed the game you can replay it keeping all your upgrades and items from you last play through. This means you can play it many times and turn the difficulty up as you please.

What makes Bastion really innovative is the story telling, all of which is done as you play by a narrator who, in addition to telling the story, will comment on you play every now and then. The narrating is brilliantly done and adds a whole new depth to the story, which in itself is very good. It keeps you playing the game partly to see what happens in the story, but also in hope that the narrator might make another comment about the way you cleared off an area, or the way you died, or the way you destroyed boxes that littered the ground with your big hammer.

Overall Bastion is a really good game. It has solid gameplay, it's not brilliant and has a few minor flaws, and some of the best story telling you will find in any game.

I like Bastion.

By kidanski posted 28th January 2012

Bastion, the independently developed game that captured the heart of many. Why?

-Amazing graphics...you often read people saying that a game looks just like a comic book, or a children's book, but in this case it is 100% true, everything has a watercolor feeling that is hard to find elsewhere (best i can think of is the old Saga Frontier 2 game)

-Compeling gameplay that stabilishes a solid foundation and gradually builds around it. It is very action oriented, from a perspective view.

-Creative story and narrator, which tells the story as you play, depending on how you play. The narrator has a smooth voice, for sure, and the tale it tells is original and bold.

-Music. I don't know much about music other then i liked it in this game, and one or 2 tunes will stay in your mind after you finish playing.

-Nice lenght. It should take you about 8 hours to finish the game, but of course, you can play again on the "new game plus" if you have completion tendencies. I like the short lenght because it lets you experience it fully and still fit your schedule.

For a non-PC RPG gamer, Bastion's precise hand-eye coordinated control system took some time to adjust to. However, once you get used to the control, the strength of the game is undeniable. The animation and narration are fantastic, with beautiful drawn scenarios and a narration that guides the player through the whole story. Like most RPG, the silent protagonist's characteristic is revealed as the story progresses. Unlike Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts franchises, Bastion relies on precise movement and weapon combination instead of leveling and stats to get through one area to another. Therefore, if you are not used to making quick movement and decision during a battle, it will take several tries to pass through each stage. Although frustrating at some part of the game, it is none-the-less heart pumping, suspenseful, and engaging game play from the beginning to the end.

Everybody should experience this!

By oneX-Xeno posted 31st December 2011

I love this game. It's been a long time since I actually felt awed by a game. Stripped down to it's bare essentials, it's an action-RPG, but that tells about 10% of what this game is about. Let me just telly ou about the finer points in this game that made it an instant classic to me, and I'll let you decide whether these appeal to you as well.

Graphics: Hand-drawn, colorful and cartoonish graphics. Monster design is very unique and the game has a certain feel and look to it, of which the graphics play a huge part. Everything is done with amazing detail and even the weapons and spirits all have their distinct look.

Audio: Music is great, and I think that it's not at all a bad idea to have a soundtrack version of this game. I didn't get it since I usually think that's a bit silly, but I really enjoyed the music in this game. The sound effects are also well done, but what really takes the cake is the narration. You have a sexy, husky Morgan-Freeman-ish male voice narrate everything you do and what happens in this game. It's such an awesome idea that I just had to lay the controller down for 5 seconds and give the designers a small applause. This is probably the second-best story telling tool I've seen in a game. It's a wonderful way of immersing you in the story, and I even had a few good laughs when I'd do something stupid and the narrator would grow weary with my antics :D

Gameplay: Action and RPG. Usually that spring to mind Diablo and it's numerous clones, but this game has so much more going for it than that. First of all, there are no silly "skill trees" or endless stats you have to carefully balance to make this work. You have spirits and 2 weapons. Yup, that's it. Make no mistake though, all weapons are unique and have their own ups and downs, so equipping yourself with the best combination possible is never as easy as it seems. You can upgrade your weapons with "money" (called shards) and parts found in shops, in-game or in weapon-specific hunting grounds, which test your ability with each weapon. Spirits are basically boosters that can increase your health, make you score more critical hits when at low health or even enhance your counter-striking abilities. Needless to say, you can also find this strewn across shops and the wilderness and so on. The amount you can equip depends on your level.

Most of the time you will be fighting numerous enemies and basically the combat consists of striking at the right time, being aware of your surroundings as not to be overwhelmed and using your shield to protect yourself and, with the right timing, counter-striking. Countering is done by pulling the shield up just before an enemy strike, and you are rewarded with that bad guy getting a nice whallop from your bull shield. You can roll out of the way if things get too hot.

That's it. I'm gonna finish up with saying that the story is great and even a bit moving by the end, so if you're into good stories the game has even that covered.

If this review didn't convince you or it was too long for you to read I'll jsut say this. You probably spend more money on hamburgers or some other needless purchases in a week than you do on games like this in a year. Do yourself a favor and skip buying that triple-frappe-mocha-latte and get this instead. You will love it and thank me for it.

A phenomenal game with some of the best use of audio I have ever experienced in a video game. The story is told through a narrator who also comments on your own actions. The narrator also adds a lot of incidental backstory without ever being intrusive. I found it to be a very effective story-telling device and one I hope to see used much more often in future.

The music is also incredible and is used very intelligently.

The gameplay itself is good, but nothing special. But that is not the joy of Bastion. What makes Bastion great is the story and how it is told.

Bastion review

By evernal posted 25th December 2011

Beautiful hand-painted visuals reminiscent of Braid along with a stunning soundtrack to boot, especially the theme when you meet Zia for the first time. Bastion is a beautiful little gem with a huge variety of weapons and skills and combinations to use. The game is not your standard hack n’ slash with melee and long range weapons. You can also block or counter enemies’ attack with the shield or use the roll to get away from danger.

The unique points of the game are obviously the running narrative which tells the story according to what you do in the game. The world falls into place as you progress and there’s a really unique system of adjusting the difficulty levels by worshipping different idols.

The gripe I have with this game is with the controls, with it being in an isometric perspective, it’s always awkward to move straight as you’ll need to press two buttons, when making turns it tends to lead you falling off the edge of the world. The use of the mouse cursor to point the direction of attack is strangely seen in an rpg game. You’ll normally see this in an top down shooter.

The world falling into place mechanism for me is not well used enough. You have stages where the world falls away as you progress creating a running against the clock kind of thing but Bastion don’t have something similar with the world falling into place. For example, you could have a switch and the world will only fall into place after you hit the switch or hidden areas where you can walk on even when there’s no apparent tiles. Overall, it’s still a great game but because of the controls I’ll have to take one star away.

Please Play This

By soldancer posted 22nd December 2011

Bastion took a little time to really hook me, but it will likely become one of the most memorable games of this decade. On the surface, it is a fairly straight-forward hack and slash style action "RPG" (with very light RPG elements), but it has much more going for that: it has HEART.

Yeah, Heart gets flack for being the crappiest of Captain Planet's power rings, but honestly aren't you a little tired of staid space marines fighting off hordes of aliens? Bastion eschews almost every mainstream game trope (except the whole post-apocalyspe thing), and does it with aplomb. The well-written and amazingly well-delivered story bring the human element to this game like few before. The narrator is cool and gives a spot-on performance as The Stranger narrating this tale of humans trying to survive in the wake of the Calamity.

Even though the story is the high point, the gameplay is no slouch, either. The game is amazingly fun and keeps you coming back for more with a gradually increasing arsenal of weaponry and a ton of unlockables in addition to the main quest. It even has a clever "idol" mechanic which lets you increase the difficulty by invoking the gods in exchange for more XP.

In closing, please play this game. It's accessible to pretty much all but the most jaded of gamers or lightweight casual players. And even then, the charm and human heart at the center of the story might just be enough to win over everyone.

Bastion, a review

By NeBy posted 19th December 2011

Bastion is a rather addictive action RPG with a level structure. While I'm usually not to keen on platform-ish games - seems a bit outdated in this time and age - Bastion gives a cool 3D-look twist on this, and in addition to the peculiar yet beautiful pastel-drawn images and colorschemes and anime-style, the player character moves through fantasy-themed environments that form paths on the fly. The protagonist travels to many unique locations other than the Bastion, including forests, wetlands, and volcanic areas. As the player progresses through each level, the player grows stronger by finding more weapons, materials to upgrade those weapons, and by gaining experience from defeating enemies. This is typical for all RPG's - or more correctly in this case, action adventure games - but Bastion does so excellently, with the right amount of incentive while not overdoing it, and enough choices for fine-tuning that it has considerable re-play value: something that is pretty rare for this sort of game. At the end of most levels, the player collects cores (which allow the player to add a building to the Bastion) and Shards which allow the player to add a secondary level to said buildings.

Between levels, the Kid visits the Bastion, where he can use the 'Fragments', the game's form of currency, he has accrued to buy materials and upgrade weapons. Here, he can use establishments, such as a shrine, an armory and a distillery. All typical ingredients are there, thus, and while Bastion is far from the scope of 'real' RPG's like Skyrim, it is nevertheless an intriguing little action adventure game, which deserves it's own place in a niche, and is well done. The 'hand-drawn' colouring, music and style, and also the narrative, which makes you feel as if you're playing a tale or story being told, sets this apart from most other action adventure games.

Bastion review

By artrexdenthur posted 11th December 2011

Bastion is one of the most amazing minor games of the year. A fast-paced action RPG, it plays like a cross between a top-down Zelda game and Cave Story, with its own clever twists.

The amount of personalized playstyle is immense. There are eleven different weapons you can find throughout the game, each with its own upgrade tree that can be respecced at any time. You can choose two of these and a special skill each time you enter a level, so that once you've acquired half of the weapons, you can both find your favorite playstyle and have a closetful of specialized tools for every challenge.

Adding to this easy customizability is the "shrines" system that allows you to petition the game's various gods for better xp and money rewards, at the cost of enemies being tougher in specific ways. This system provides different difficulty settings integrated right into the gameworld itself, a nice touch.

As for the graphics, it's not the most high tech thing out there (it ran with almost no lag on my year-old HP Pavilion) but it's aesthetically amazing; you can always tell what you're hitting and it always looks very nice.

The story is tried-and-true without, in the end, being overly derivative: the world has just experienced a calamity of epic proportions, and you, the heroic mime, must work to restore it under the direction of the Wise Old Man. But he knows more about the Calamity than he lets on...

As many have said, a must-buy, unless you're only into strategy games. Strategy this game has not, but its fast-paced, tactical combat is polished to a shine. And if you like it, and haven't played Cave Story it's both free: http://www.cavestory.org/downloads_game.php

and has a prettier version on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/200900/

Rarely do I used the word brilliant for a game. I use the word brilliant here in the full meaning of the word. The story is subtle, building as you move through the first level and embraces you into the world in which the game is set. Your every move is narrated by one of the best voice actors in a game I've heard in the past 15 years. Think Morgen Freeman, but better. Yes, better. With such narration you might think it would get annoying or be over done, but no, it sets the mood perfectly, you ARE "the kid." The animations is beautiful, smooth, non-cartoony, hand drawn images, just lovely. It reminds me of Saga Frontier 2 meets Kingdom Hearts but much better. If cell-shading isn't really your cup of tea (read you hated LoZ: Wind Waker) here the drawn images add to the game opposed to just being a gimmick. Game play wise the game is smooth, responsive and easy to learn. You can use a game pad but with mouse and keyboard it works great, much better than I expected. I was rolling, blocking, slashing and shooting within minutes. The game teaches you all you need to know through playing the game and not being locked away in some training "sim." Very nice. All and All, well worth full price and more and being someone who is cheap as dirt this really means something. Buy this now, it's better than anything Nintendo/Square has made in the past 5 years action-rpg wise.

What an awesome little game!! Bastion boasts more charm and gameplay than some majorly expensive games. It is a bit of a short game but there is an option to play through again using the New Game+ feature. I have completed this game on Xbox 3 times now and still bought this for PC just to support this.

The GFX are very nice, I love them - speaking as a comic fan. The soundtrack is amazing and I find my self sometimes just booting up the game and listening to the music... (awesome once you find the music box in-game, as it let's you choose what track to play). The sad and melancholic vibe really lends itself to the storyline. The much famed narrator: awesome. Simply awesome. He comments and narrates your actions throughout the game and, again, really contributes to the whole game-play. I've heard someone describe his voice being verbal chocolate... and I must agree.

Great visuals, music and storytelling meets a simple and not so great combat system.

Overall Bastion is a "charmingly fun" game.

It's definately a pleasure experience to play this game after some MMO... The controls are easy to master, and many upgrades of weapons just keep you playing for more hours. Definately recommend to get it.

A hair's breadth from perfection

Bastion and I did not get off to a good start. After installation the game crashed before even starting. After executing all the additional install files (dotnet, directx, xna) this was redeemed and I have to say that the game got me hooked from the first few seconds on.

From the first steps you take in the world of Caelondia you know that you are experiencing something special and rare. Bastion has what sadly most modern games are lacking: It grips you right from the beginning and doesn't let go. The game shines in every department. The story is masterfully told through flawless voice acting by a narrator commenting your every step. The music is atmospheric and very well composed and performed. Some really great vocal tracks shine a spotlight on important parts in the game's story. The artwork is beautiful and perfectly shows that 2D is not dead.

As if a nearly perfect presentation wasn't enough, the game is most of all fun to play. The difficulty ramps up nicely without being unfair and players who like a challenge can make the enemies harder by using a very clever game mechanic. There are a good number of different weapons (melee and ranged) which offer a wide variety of play strategies. A number of training grounds grant a challenge that is tailor-made for each respective weapon. Each weapon can be upgraded a number of times which cost money you earn by defeating foes and certain items you find by exploring the world.

Content-wise the game is satisfyingly long and a New Game Plus mode lets you revisit the whole story while keeping all experience points. The sometimes quite difficult weapon challenges allow to play the game after the story is over and replaying the game with the enemies at their hardest will prove to be an entertaining task for those who want to remain in the Caelondia a bit longer.

All in all I can't really find anything severely wrong with Bastion, except maybe that the game was obviously designed to be played with a controller, so using the keyboard and mouse felt somewhat awkward and caused stress on the hands during extended play. Additionally, since the design is using an isometric perspective (where the main axes are diagonal) together with a euclidean control (the WASD keys move the player horizontally and vertically), you have to constantly use two keys to move diagonally and in a fight this may often lead to the protagonist falling off an edge. It's not that bad but could have been easily fixed.

I paid the discount price for the game but after finishing it I feel a little like I cheated Supergiant Games out of their well deserved money. I'll think of buying it again should it be released for the PS3.

All in all it's an excellent game and deserved all the awards and nominations it received. I would strongly recommend it to anyone who even remotely likes action adventures.

Gorgeous painted visuals, unique environment and Steam Punk sort of ambiance, followed by simple but interesting game play mechanics make this game a real gem. The learning curve is short and light and within 10-15 minutes, you will get the hand of things.

The only short-coming I have with the game is that where you point your mouse cursor is a bit misleading to the direction of where you're attacking and looking. You attack in the direction of your mouse cursor, but you might be looking at a different direction. It would have been nice if your toon faces the same direction as the cursor all the time, even if he's moving in a different direction. Also, the movement controls feel a bit 'slow'.

I think so far, having played roughly an hour, the game may keep you interested on and off for awhile, but if you're looking into a heavy RPG like Temple of Elemental Evil, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, look elsewhere. This is meant to be a casual RPG.

Really fun and simple game. The narrator really improves the game and is really funny and great with the feel of the game and the music is amazing. All these things help the game thrive on it's already really well made gameplay and it's great. I Highly recommend this game it's a great experience.

Simple but fun game. Has an nice story with an interesting plot. I think you can play this on any type of pc, but can't check it. There are however some framerate issues where sometimes the game slows down an bit but still very playable and you hardly notice it.

Controls are quite responsive and quite accurate. However don't go rolling near cliffs as you tend to misjudge the room you have for rolling and fall of the edge which is quite annoying if you get stuck between an enemy and the cliff (chose your poison)

This game is an enjoyable isometric view slasher, with a few fun gimmicks that keep you coming back for more. Where the game excels though is the storytelling. It doesn't quite tell you a story, it narrates a story as you play the game which is pretty unique and very enjoyable. Honourable mentions go out to the classy artstyle, and the great sound track!

Amazing story telling, giving you only small cracks of what is truly around you, just like when something really does go wrong. The world around you breaks apart, and nothing makes sense, but that's exactly why it feels so real. Mix a solid story with gameplay that intertwines with it well, and you've got a winner. Worth every penny.

Great, but slightly short, game!

The game looks and feels great. Indies don't usually challenge your GPU, and neither does this one really, but the textures are sharp and beautiful, and the animation quality helps the combat alot. This is easily one of the best dual-stick shooter type games I've played, the controls feel great, and the counter-blocking mechanism is more or less my favorite feature. You can more or less block everything and damage enemies if you manage to counter the attack by timing your block. Ended up killing things by blocking more than with weapons in the midgame at high difficulties.

The story wasn't bad at all, but once you start ramping up the difficulty by activating idols it gets a bit hard to pay attention to the narrator at times since you die really fast. The game is fairly short and doesn't _really_ offer a lot in replayability either, so that leaves you with less value (not that it's expensive really). You get a "new game plus"-thing that basically lets you grind your character to max level if you want, and you can challenge yourself by maxing out the difficulty, but other than that there doesn't seem to be much to do after the first playthrough.

I'd highly recommend this if you like dualstick shooters and storydriven games. That it's DRM-free is just delicious icing on an amazing cake.

This game is amazing. Combine extremely fun gaming elements with an outstanding soundtrack and probably the best narration I've seen in a game in a very long time and you've got Bastion in a nutshell. You cannot go wrong with this game.
