GAME SUMMARY

Bioshock

Rating: 4.5 (339 votes cast)

BioShock is a shooter unlike any you've ever played, loaded with weapons and tactics never seen. You'll have a complete arsenal at your disposal from simple revolvers to grenade launchers and chemical throwers, but you'll also be forced to genetically modify your DNA to create an even more deadly weapon: you. Injectable plasmids give you super human powers: blast electrical currents into water to electrocute multiple enemies, or freeze them solid and obliterate them with the swing of a wrench.

No encounter ever plays out the same, and no two gamers will play the game the same way.

  • Biologically modify your body: send fire storming from your fingertips and unleash a swarm of killer hornets hatched from the veins in your arms.
  • Hack devices and systems, upgrade your weapons and craft new ammo variants.
  • Turn everything into a weapon: the environment, your body, fire and water, and even your worst enemies.
  • Explore an incredible and unique art deco world hidden deep under the ocean.

Bioshock...WOW!!! this game really knows how to do atmosphere. It just seems to do everything prefect the game play the amazing story and most of all the world.Rapture is magnificent a prefect representation of a vision gone wrong where everything is on the verge of ruin. This is a world that tells its own story like a jigsaw with its audio logs you can run around only putting the edges together or you can take you time and search for other parts of the story to give you the full picture of the city to see how a paradise fell to ruins all because of its greatest creation Plasmids.

"Would You Kindly" Do Yourself a Favor and Buy This Game?

I won't mince words: BioShock is the best first-person shooter of all time. The atmosphere, setting, and plot are all highly original and truly second-to-none in the FPS genre. The art-deco art and architectural style that gives the underwater city of Rapture its character meshes perfectly with the ideological theme -- Ayn Rand's "objectivism" -- that forms the foundation of the story. I could easily write a dissertation on the political underpinnings of BioShock, and many academics already have deeply analyzed the game for various blogs and publications (including some peer-reviewed academic journals, if I remember correctly). In short, I interpreted the political statement of the game to be, broadly speaking, that the collapse of visionary Andrew Ryan's -- an anagram of Ayn Rand -- Rapture is the logical conclusion of the social implementation of Rand's objectivist political philosophy, which essentially amounts to a highly secularized, (even more) greed-driven version of an industrial capitalist economy propped up by a minimalist "night watchman" state. If you're interested in social and political theory, you will find no first-person shooter more intellectually stimulating than this one. If you have no such interest, you'll find that the philosophical and sociopolitical elements of BioShock contribute to creating a highly engrossing narrative that both rises from and is an inextricable part of a painstakingly-crafted setting. The mood of the game is awe-inspiring and chillingly creepy, amplified by the claustrophobic feeling of being trapped in an underwater city with thousands of genetically-modified, dangerous lunatics. The ambient sound, punctuated by the pangs of steel under the stress of high water pressure, dripping water, and the vocalizations of Rapture's inhabitants helps tie everything together. As for the gameplay, Irrational Games/2K Boston has created a challenging and rewarding experience that is made all the more fun by fluid and intuitive controls and a freedom of exploration that isn't overwhelming or lacking direction. The hacking minigames provide a nice break from the shooting and provide opportunities for strategically managing combat situations as well as providing machine allies. The replay value of BioShock is surprisingly high (I've played through it four times now) and everything about it, including its graphics, are still impressive nearly six years later. Almost everything about this game is absolutely perfect. The only criticism I can think of is that you can't simultaneously wield both a weapon and a plasmid power, and this was fixed for BioShock 2, a great game in its own right, but couldn't hope to match the perfection of its predecessor. BioShock was awarded the "Game of the Year" title by numerous review outlets for a very good reason. In my mind, it's a strong contender for "Game of the Decade". If you've somehow managed to make it to 2013 without having played this game, now is the time to correct that error and join the rest of the gaming community in having had the wonderful experience that is BioShock. You will not regret the purchase.

Awesome FPS, with it's own, particular atmosphere, and great gameplay !

It brought many great things to video games, that some brand new games still don't manage to bring.

One of the top 10 FPS to play !

It is a beautiful but strange world. Fascinating environment that is eerie, elegant music that is mysterious, lovely children that is under external control, dramatic plot and touching ending depict a unprecedented world in the game of bioshock. Maybe, this is the most artistic violent game, almost all would be "shocked" after finishing this game. Maybe, this is the game with the deepest content

This is a fantastic game, and has one of the most amazing introductions in any game this generation. It also has a really compelling way of storytelling without resorting to any cutscenes

Under the ocean lies the city of Rapture, a city of dream that turned to hell.

The appetite of the citizens for the plasmids leads them to madness and desolation. As a foreigner to this city you'll be the only one able to redeem Rapture and the little sisters or, choose the power and destroy the last hope for this city to see what humanity looks like.

Very enjoyable FPS game! It has very nice graphics and an appealing game atmosphere. There's also an intriguing storyline. The shooter mechanics itself are pretty standard for a FPS game, but the plasmids are a lot of fun.

This game is all about the setting. The visuals and the mood created by this game are unrivalled. You will be enamoured by the world.

But, the gameplay is a little sloppy for a shooter. Your character feels like he is always floating as the controls are not very tight. Also, the weapons list is underwhelming. Multiplayer is irrelevant.

i tried to like this game, but its basically a great visual experience but a dull gameplay one

Probably one of the best FPS RPG's in the vein of System Shock and Deus Ex. Really easy though. The splices make for an interesting mechanic that definitely add a lot of playstyles.

One of the best games of the last decade in my opinion. The graphics, art and sound are state of the art and make it one the most immersive games you'll ever play.

You can describe this game with one word: Awesome.

The first thing I said after the ending was over was, "Holy crap, that game was amazing!"

I enjoyed every minute of the game. The combat is amazing, the levels are all well-made, the voice acting is some of the best I have seen in any game ever, and the story line is flawless. From audio logs, to making sure you found every last secret, to finding all the little sisters, you will sink hours into Bioshock. My only complaint is the final boss is too easy. However, this game is still amazing; I recommend it to anyone who enjoys FPS games.

You need Activation code! Or you can't install the game. Your code is in your profile.

The game works.

We can add a reviews only to those games that we have purchased. I have purchased BioShock, so here I am! Yeah!!

Before buying this game I have played the Demo. It was scary demo but fantastic! Now that I have the game I will be able to play longer then the Demo allowed.

Big Dady and Little Sisters, are the starts of this game. I have saw all 3 alternative ends for this game.... But it doesn't removed my which to play the full game version by my own.

It seams we can't play Bioshock 1 online. And I am trying to find a map editor for this game... If you know where to find this map editor, please tell me.

Thank you for ready,

Thank you Gamersgate!

Happy play!

Keeps you going forward

I'm not usually a very big fan of FPS games, but this one was surprisingly well put together. The story is entirely told through recordings left by those who came before you and by transmissions you receive from characters in the game. The city is very atmospheric and remains a pleasure to uncover every nook and cranny throughout the entire game, never becoming annoying or dull. Exploration is well rewarded with numerous items and upgrades, and I had a lot of fun playing with all the different weapons and special abilities, finding my perfect mix. I haven't played it on the hardest mode, but considering what a newbie I am to FPS games and the ease with which I played (little difficulty on normal, breezed through without a single death on easy) tells me that if you're looking for a challenge, you may want to look elsewhere. If you're looking for a great FPS that lets you pick your playstyle and provides a narrative and atmosphere that drives you ever forward to the end, it's definitely worth checking out!

This is one of the best first-person-shotters that I ever played, it has an awesome story and design, the Rapture is an incredible cenary, they managed to make a "futuristic" city in the fifties that goes wrong plausibe. The gameplay is great, the plasmids made you have a hole set of different abilitys that makes this FPS unique. The enemies are smart, especially the Big Daddy, that is really hard to kill. But one thing that piss me off about this game, is that he only accepts a Xbox 360 controller, so if you have another controller, you can't use it to play this game...

One of the best First Person Shooters this generation. Made by the team resposnible for System Shock 2, this is a pseudo-sequel to the Shock series. From the first moments you enter Rapture (the underwater city where the game takes place) you'll know this will be an experience you'll never forget.

It is a FPS that tells a story, a good story, whether directly or by way of the environment. The graphics are still good today, the gameplay is great. Simply put, Bioshock is an experience. Not to be missed.

Underwater Thriller-Adventure Masterpiece

By joshvamped03 posted 4th November 2011

The day I first got my hands on this game was a day I will definitely remember for a very long time. I'm a real sucker for great narrative structure and atmospheres, and this game has the mother-load of both.

The game-play is reminiscent of the old system shock series but they really cultivated the underwater experience and took out some of the more tedious mechanics to allow the player to enjoy the captivating underwater city environment.

The combat isn't amazing; in-fact, I would say it was sub-par for an FPS, but the bad combat is by far outweighed by the experience that Bioshock provides during and around the combat. Many things can be hacked to fight for you and there is a great deal of plasmids available for use that provide endless entertainment.

The storyline gets a bit bad after meeting Ryan face to face, but I still enjoyed myself happily right to the end of the game, which is about 28 hours of gameplay if you are a good player.

If you are about to play this game for the first time, I would like to tell you how much I envy you, as my first experience with Bioshock was an absolutely amazing one.

Overall, this is definitely a game that you have to play at least once in your life, and I can almost guarantee you will enjoy your time in rapture.

Great game, works with a controller (unlike 2) and does not have achievements (if that matters to you).

You probably already know about the story. It's great and no sense in spoiling it for everyone.

You get to go all 1950's underwater +10.

There is no multiplyaer - but there didn't need to be.....basically everything that is "so-so" for bioshock 2 is either not in the first one, or done better. If you had to choose, play the first one. The second is really so-so.

Briliant World Building

By CrashDawg posted 27th July 2011

Considering how many FPS titles there are out there, it can be hard sometimes to compare them. What made Bioshock, for me, my favorite FPS is the depth and quality of the world it is set in. Yes, the graphics are great and the game play is suitably smooth (like several similar FPS games) but the world is just breathtaking. From the beginning the world sells itself, and the effect it achieves is too good to miss.

If you are considering purchasing Bioshock, might I tell you that you won't regret it. Every aspect of this game is astounding, and it's one of the most memorable experiences in gaming I've had in a while. Gameplay is fun and well-balanced, story is well-written (the background of the city of rapture and the major characters is great), art style is very unique and well-translated into the game's graphics. Definitely on my list of top gaming experiences.

Don't let the DRM stories scare you. Previously DRM was an issue with Bioshock but 2K Games has fortunately changed how it works. Before you could reinstall it 2 times and then you had to call SecureROM. Then it was changed to 5 times and then completely removed. As for the game itself it is brilliant. The soundtrack takes you back to the 30's in the creepy yet seducing world Rapture is. It is a worthy "successor" to System Shock 2 in my opinion and Bioshock 2 is also just as great an experience. Don't let this game go by you...

Production values are high, i.e. graphics, sound and so on are very good. Gameplay is good, too. Setting and story aren't your run of the mill scenario either. Levels are varied and the overall length of the game is just about right. It's neither too short or so long it would start to feel tedious.

However it has its downsides. The story is only innovative on a high level. As it progresses it becomes very predictable and cliché.

Other than that, there's a host of minor points of criticism that add up. The difficulty curve drops the longer you play. The minigame gets annoying after several dozen times. The loot/inventory system feels limiting (you can only carry very little ammo/money and for the most part there's no way to check what or how much you are carrying). Plus it feels like they tried to include too many gameplay mechanics that don't really add to the game (e.g. crafting, camera farming, many redundant/useless "spells").

Overall it's fun to play but lacks replayability.

I had alot of fun playing this game. There are basically two sets of equipment. One is the guns. The other is the special powers. It gives you a coose-you-own-method of game play.

The enemies are varied with only a few mega bosses that need many hits to kill. This is a good thing to me.

The enemies you do have will move around on their own. That means you can't always count on them being in the same spot. Some you can but not all of them. You can also setup ambushes and traps for them.

It was fun to have a shooter game with such variety.

By Exploding-Bob posted 20th January 2011

This is one of the not so big collection of FPS games that nearly all the "done right´s" in it there can be. Story, Setting Presentation and Gameplay it just breath taking.

But there are faults, in my book:

- the "Savegame"-system just regenerates you after seconds after you die on the same timeline. This means skillful fighting isn´t that rewarding as you just can back and come back and come back... until everybody is dead.

- the Help-system always tells you EXACTLY what to do and where to go next. Taking a lot of exploration fun.

And the story make the game a bit too linear in feeling.

- Audio Diaries are MANDATORY on your first playthrough. Otherwise you just will not get what the heck is going on in Rupture.

If you don´t mind that or learn to work with it this is still a exemplary story driven FPS game.

I finished this game last christmas vacation. At first I thought its just another storyless shoot-em-up FPS genre with highly improved graphics, I was proven wrong immediately after a few minutes playing. The story is so intriguing, the environment is so fascinating specially the Victorian steam punk motif of the environment. And when you thought you've seen it all, wait til you reach the story ending, you wouldn't expect how the game will end. No wonder Angie of gamersgate highly recommended this game, indeed, its highly recommendable. The graphics is so advanced, specially when you walk through water. The sound is great too, very nice to showcase your good sound system. I gave it a 5 out of 5 rating.

Ahhh!! Bioshock! You truly have redefined the genre, have you? By introducing a state of the art plot, marvelous graphics, superb gameplay and great sound effects... How come there's people not playing you?

Plot preview:

You impersonate a survivor of a plane crash who suddendly finds himself amidst the Atlantic Ocean... you swim for a lighthouse you find nearby only to find that in truth it is the very doorstep of a city... a giant city, underwater: Rapture. An distopian paradise city, the very dream of 19th century's Utilitarianists... soon after arriving you realize that something's gone wrong... horribly wrong... and you must survive in the harsh environment Rapture has become, whilst unraveling many a secret and twisted plot.

I did not have many expectations for this game, since I don’t like first-person shooters (despite it says RPG, this game remains mostly a shooter). But I must say that I like Bioshock quite a lot. So much, indeed, that I am now considering to buy the sequel, Bioshock 2.

The story is just great. An original, compelling, and well written story. That alone would be enough to endure the more frantic features of a shooter. On top of that, the graphic is superb, and the visual effects are also part of the story and gameplay (like when you pass through water and you lose a clear visual, very well done).

I enjoyed the RPG-features, of course there is nothing too complex or demanding in that department, you just find better weapons, better ammunitions, and some "genetic enhancements" that make you stronger or faster or use a form of "magic". Simple, but overall well-done and interesting enough to make you want to see more. Not enough to make me want to play again as I usually do with RPGs (try this class, than try another class, and so forth), but still, more than I expected.

I was also pleased to see that they took the trigger-happy features typical of shooters at bay with well balanced difficulty levels. You can play with minimal pressure on you reflex and aim but still have a decent challenge and, above all, feel that you are really part of the story. Well done as well.

I thoroughly recommend this game to anybody interested in RPGs, at the current price is also a steal and will keep you happy for weeks.
