GAME SUMMARY

Democracy 2

Rating: 3.2 (156 votes cast)

Do you crave power? Could you do a better job of running the country than the people currently in charge? Are you sick of corrupt politicians making stupid decisions that benefit only themselves? Could you keep enough of the population happy to win re-election, and still turn around the economy and deal with the national debt? Be warned it's not as easy as it sounds...

Democracy 2 is the ultimate political strategy / simulation game. Based on a complex Neural network, the game simulates the motivations, loyalties and desires of everyone in the country. As president or prime minister, it's your job to balance the need for income from taxes against the demands of the voters. Do you want your country to be an eco-friendly green paradise? or a socialist utopia? Will you pander to the patriots, the liberals or the religious pressure groups? Can you keep crime under control without destroying the civil liberties of your citizens?

Democracy 2 looks daunting at first, but the game is easy to pick up once you understand the basic principle behind it. An innovative user-interface shows the relationships between everything in the game just by hovering your mouse over an object. The game is 'turn based', so it's the ideal game for those who prefer an intelligent, cerebral game. The amount of actions you can take each turn is limited, so you will need to think carefully if you are doing the right thing.

The key to the game are the policy 'sliders' that let you adjust how your government runs. You can raise or lower taxes with a slider, or even adjust education policy, or workers rights in exactly the same way. This system makes for a game that is easy to learn and difficult to master.

Democracy 2 covers the whole range of political opinion and policy, from debates over stem cell research and school prayer, through the provision of state health care and benefit payments to the unemployed, right across to tax shelters for the wealthy, the death penalty, military spending and civil rights. regardless of where you stand on political topics, you will have the option to put your ideology to the test. This newer version of the game has a vastly increased selection of policies, far greater accuracy of simulation, and subtlety of gameplay, and also features a selection of real world statistical data for comparison to help you put political choices in context.

Also new to Democracy 2 is the concept of cabinet ministers. Each area of policy now has a minister, appointed by you, and with their own loyalty and political opinion. You need to keep the ministers happy if you are to generate enough 'political capital' to successfully push through the more controversial policies. In Democracy 2, every policy has a varying level of controversy which will affect how easily it is changed. Introduce school buses? no problem, but attempt to introduce or repeal the death penalty of military conscription and you can expect to need strong political backing!

The game also has a totally re coded voter system. You no longer have a voter who is just a socialist, motorist and a farmer, but they have 'fractional' membership of many groups. You have hardcore (100%) motorists who will drive no matter what, and casual motorists who only use a car occasionally and are easily persuaded on to public transport. This system works throughout the game to give Democracy 2 an even finer and subtler simulation. Voters also join and leave political parties, and have a variable tendency to vote. They can even join terrorist organizations when especially upset.

Democracy 2 review

I did not find this game very fun. Basically you have to bribe your constituents with pet projects until they like you then alternate to cutting all the programs you just implemented the following term so you don't go past the debt ceiling. There are no graphics other then the policy page this huge map of policies which show how one thing affects another. I was also greatly annoyed that every single quote in between turns is one from Barrack Obama. There are thousands of democratically elected leaders in many countries but the developers decided to use a single person whose mettle hasn't even really been tested for every quote. Oh and don't try and edit the file by adding your own quotes that breaks the game. Overall played it once and that was enough. If your looking for a good political strategy game I think there are better options.

Although an interesting premises this game ultimately makes you feel less like an actual president and more like an accountant, balancing various spreadsheets. While not terrible I find myself disappointed all the same.

Fun and not fun

To start with, the game is really fun and interesting, as you get some knowhow about the game mechanics. There are various forms to lead a country and various laws to inforce.

But as you play it more times it gets boring really fast and really lacks challenge.'

+ You get a good basic understanding of democratic government

- Replayability is poor and it gets too easy to play

Like many games in it's approach and genre (i.e. Superpowers) this game has an element of random monkey moments when it comes to the behind the scenes math that seems to drive the game. I've enjoy the game for it's random results however the average gamer will likely grow irate at the unfathomable disparity between the quality of their play in the game between sessions.

Oh the challenges of running the federal government. Democracy 2 is simple in it's interface, well, once you get used to it, but the critical thinking and being able to appease the masses around your pseudocountry are quite different. As I'm learning the in's and out's of this educational yet addictive game, I've been assassinated twice, voted out twice, and those coming with creating a budget surplus and eliminating the national debt..wow..you'd thing being a fearless leader with fearless policies would leave me feeling, I don't know, maybe fearless?? Not a game for the speed clicker, no, but if you wanted to just sit back from turn to turn, analyze cause and effect, and well, play Mr./Ms. President or Dictator, then this game may be worth the look!

Nice turn base strategy game for people who likes to think

The gameplay is the following.

Each turn you implement a new state policy or change an old one. Any your action requires certain quantity of resourses. The only resource in the game is "political influence" (PI). PI is earned each turn.

I would say, the game is pretty easy.

After you remember the effects of all policies which you may implement you may get rid of most of State issues and people would love you.

O.K.: The graphics are simply. But they fulfill their purpose: Supporting you with all the information that you need to rule your country. Try to do your best in politics to keep in office. It's a lot of fun to see how you can influence the crowd by passing new laws. And as in reality: You need a certain amount of political influence to get a bill passed by the parliament. But be aware: Don't stress a single social group to much - you might end up in a body suit otherwise!

A clever, challenging, and inventive political simulator. Democracy 2 provides a humbling perspective that brings to light the complexity and difficulty of the duties that a President or Prime Minister is expected to fulfill.

The game is fun and with several interesting gimmicks. However, I don't think it's worth the price for the amount of gametime one can get out of it. It's replayability is weaker than many strategy games. Still, a solid game.

The idea sound good and fun, and its is. But after a while the game become boring as its is almost always the same you do. So if you first get in a good spiral, then you can win whit a huge margin. but otherwise a good game, that are worth to buy.

The idea was sound and they certainly did a good job devloping a simple model of politics and social policy. The major flaw in the game is that some things are qualitatively different. Having police armed with sub-machine guns is not an extension of police armed with pistols and the effects are very different in real life.

The good thing is that one can modify the game files. The downside is that the model remains flawed and gets old after the first few hours. There also is very little character to interest the player after the first 20 hours.

Challenging and pretty addictive game at first but will get boring after you learn how the game mechanics works. All countries will end up being very similiar but i guess that is only realistic since it reflects similiar wills and needs of peoples in real life democrasies. 4/5.

The game is fun to play, specially for the political theorist that want to check if his views on politics actually has something in it. I call would´t call it a 100% right political simulator, but it is a good one. It is a little sad that after three elections when you are on the top of your popularety and have the economy running fine the game tells you that the next election will be your last, but you can´t have it all i guess.

This is a really interesting and original game, I can tell you that much. It can get REALLY tedious for some, but if your thing is politics, it starts to grow on you.

The only major flaw I have is that it's a little expensive for what you're getting; it's user interface is really simple, and that's about all that you see for the whole game. Wait for the price to drop if you're interested.

Interesting simulation. I don't always agree with the effects of some of the policies.. some of them seem to be made to fit a certain political point of view. It would be nice if these were moddable (maybe they are.. I haven't had the game long enough to mess with modding yet) :)

It's fun though.

This a really in depth political strategy game, where you are the President ofthe USA. There are lots of features, lots of options, and lots of things you can do in this game. You will not learn to play it right away. There is a learning curve. But it is worth it, since it is very accurate, realistic, and fun to play.

the game is great, but i did not like the idea of ficticious countries, in "Democracy 1", ruling real countries was a good notion to understand some "national problems", how to solve then, how to create "new problems" (like religious with me =P), but the game still have in its core the complexities of the law system with the government efficiency, a good game for every citizen to learn more about politics and its influence over our lifes.

This game overall is a great game and representation of a democracy. Though it got 2 big problems.

1: There is no epilogue or "winning" of any sort, the game just flat out quits after your terms expires, it kinda feels equivalent to building a Sand Castle on the beach only to watch a wave wash it out.

2: The decisions you make excalate both ways, if you make bad decisions they go in a downward spiral until you lose which is fine, but if you keep making good decisions you end in a upward spiral until you got an perfect utopia going. This robs the late game of any replayability as in my last elections my opponents got between 0-150 votes while i got 40.000.000 votes.

I found it to be an enjoyable game, if not a bit too complex for my brain after a long day at work. I played the demo briefly and to be honest I've been waiting to see it either come down in price or go on sale, so this weekends sale (50% off) brought it down to even lower then I had told myself I would pay for the game. I was actually just waiting for it to hit only $19.99 so this small bonus of 8 more $ made the purchase even sweeter.

Overall, it would seem that the game can be heavily modded to where we can add our own choice of countries instead of using the pregiven xx countries which should add some more life to the game in the long run, allowing creative gamers to come up with some great countries to try out.

A good improvement on the first one, however it is lacking 2 of the missions result in crash to desktop. Once u have everyone happy and economy humming along the only events u get are technology breakthroughs and terrorism.

Game does need a few more factors like agricultural events and resource levels perhaps
