Defenders of Ardania

Rating: 3.8 (140 votes cast)

Defenders of Ardania (DoA) is a next-generation tower defense game set in the rich fantasy world of Majesty, but with a twist. Besides the addictive core mechanics of placing towers to stop advancing enemy units, DoA also allows players to take on the role of the attackers seeking to conquer the enemy base.

DoA’s innovative new game concepts include light RTS elements, taking the popular genre to the next level. Players must oversee unit production and upgrades while assembling the most effective army from one of three playable races, each with unique locations, towers, and units. However, without magic, a fantasy game is little more than a toothless lion (or dragon, rather), so a wide range of spells will be available for players to decimate their enemies and protect their forces.

Although DoA includes a single-player portion, the focus of the game is undoubtedly multiplayer, where two to four players can take each other on or compete against AI opponents via Internet, LAN, or PSN. The multiplayer component offers three different game modes where players can assume either the defensive or offensive sides – or both!

Features

  • An intriguing new take on the massively popular tower defense genre: players lead both offensive and defensive operations
  • Ardania: the world of Majesty with three playable races and their unique environments
  • Defense: 24 different upgradeable towers to erect against the invading enemy
  • Attack: 24 varied units with diverse attributes to assemble into an offensive force
  • Strong multiplayer component with a variety of game modes for up to four players
  • Interactive environment that affects gameplay
  • A wide range of offensive and defensive spells

Defenders of Ardania review

Traditional TD game with a fantasy setup, really nice graphics and a lot of stages/upgradeable weapons. Just keep in mind, even thought the cover looks like an RPG or a RTS, it is not, it is just a simple Tower Defense game, so setup your expectation right.

Ehh...

I'm pretty bored of tower defense games in general, and there seem to be far too many of them. However, if a tower defense game feels unique and fresh I can still be persuaded to play it. Defenders of Aradania is not that game. It feels really clunky and unpolished, and even on double speed the pacing is slower than molasses in January. It's not that it's an awful game, but it's so thoroughly mediocre that I don't really recommend it to anyone unless you're a serious tower defense junkie in need of a fix.

I'll start off by saying this could've been a lot better. Tower defence in the Majesty universe, what could go wrong? Unfortunately, this game gets boring rather fast, with repetitive gameplay ruling throughout. The muliplayer is the most hyped part by the developers, and this is where it falls down. Games will often escalate to the same boring stalemate. The single player campaign is short and lacklustre.

If you're looking for a multiplayer TD game, Sol Survivor blows this out of the water. If you want a single player TD game, there are hundreds of better options out there.

It’s the twist on gameplay that really sets these new-era TD games apart. Unstoppable Gorg and Plants vs Zombies are similar beasts; adapt the core gameplay to new mechanics, and it no longer feels like the same old stuff. While a bit fluffy and transparent, Defenders of Ardania holds up well for a game based entirely upon ushering your dudes against castles and towers and defending against opposing dudes with their own castles and towers. The only real replayability lies in custom skirmishes and multiplayer, as the level structure is linear. Multiplayer is a huge letdown though, and it’s where this otherwise great game loses a lot of points; as it’s a veritable ghost-town, haunted by the undead souls of players who sit in their own servers, waiting for opponents who never come. The time commitment of each level scales up as you progress, from a few minutes to even a few hours (no joke), so if you’re nearing the end of the game, or you manage to find a multiplayer match, keep that in mind. Bottom line is if you want an interesting take on TD game mechanics, look no further than Defenders of Ardania.

Defenders of Ardania is a rather unique spin on the tower defense genre. The game isn't the best of looking games, but is a lot of fun. The price is a bit steep for the amount in the game but it is certainly worth the fun.

A unique take on the tower defense genre as it allows multi-player and the ability to play the attacker. Set in the same universe as the majesty series, you get that great Sean Connery sounding voice work. There are 3 playable races each either their own unique play styles. My only problem is that getting multi-player to work is a bit of a chore, but when you do its such a great game

Great idea but needs work

I really would like to give it 4 stars like others have, but there is a flaw with the game. Whilst at first it seems like the idea of tower defense and tower offense is something good, it essentially is just RTS in its most basic form. The later levels improve slightly as it feels like there is actually some form of strategy required, but it is still a case of button mashing the add units and send icons until you win. To top it off, the UI is in need of some work. At the moment it involves clicking on a square to bring up a huge screen filling mess which you will spend almost the entire game having sat there whilst you mash the buttons.

So, overall it has potential providing that the developers - who are the team responsible for the good but overlooked Majesty series of games - keep interest in the project and improve on it. Worth a punt at a tenner, probably better if priced at a fiver or so.

Basically, "Defenders of Ardania" is a simple Tower Defense clone - but with a twist. The variety of different towers, the tactical battles and the nice, quick and beautiful graphic lures the player to start one game and another one and another one ... The campaign - in which you conquer the realm of humans, the ruins of an elven society and the land of the undead - is fun as well, even if it lacks originality. Anyway: a very good "Tower defense" version, especially for a quick game after dinner :-).

Its a modified tower defense game, when u take on role defending and attacking at once against enemy player or AI, you have varoius types of units and buildings, your units can level up to became a powerfull hero. The game is done in Majesty humour style as well. The ending of campaign is hilarious.

Game is made mostly for multiplayer. Its not amazing game but can kill time. At release i severly lack possibilty of playing othe races than human in sungleplayer.

Majesty is dead

I bought this game honestly hoping for some majesty related wonder I could experience. Majesty 1 was an amazingly awesome game of amazing awesomeness. Majesty 2 was a lack luster annoyance that drove up the blood pressure, and measurable in fractional amounts of goodness to the original. This game is a kick in the balls from the dev's, just standing there and pounding away at you while laughing gleefully.

1) The elves aren't blue. In fact, the elf voice actor sounds like someone dying of lung cancer.

2) It's actually piss poor as a tower defense game, most maps towers barely reach where they are firing. It basically boils down to setup a basic defense then spam rogues and wizards, and maybe either a dwarf or some elves (elves are cheaper, I usually go with that).

3) Pretty much the entire game is you on fast mode just pumping out super units (heroes) and regular units. Again, they have a lot, but the only ones you care about are the ones that'll blow up towers or move really fast - the tanks are vulnerable since they are insanely slow, and the rest are pretty useless. You might use a bit of a "tactic" by getting some tanks up to towers then spamming runners, but that's about the limit of it and spamming wizards is still better.

4) The story is very bland. Majesty usually has a decent to bad story, and this game fell in the trope of the rest of the series (a bunch of boring easy stages and then HAHA50billionHPbossF***youPLAYER).

5) Graphics aren't bad, but aren't good. All the animations are recycles from Majesty 2, with extremely few new animations and a lot of them made worse. From max zoom a lot of the animations will auto splice (only show about one of every 5 frames).

6) There is nothing of real worth here, everything is really boring and not well done. There is little strategic element compared to something like Defence Grid, and I got more enjoyment out of Kingdom Rush (that's saying something).

Do not buy this title. Please, leave Majesty's corpse alone and stop kicking me in the nuts with these sup bar sequels.

Gem of a tower defense! This game has it all! Basic Tower Defense madness and with units! Yes units!!... You can send them to retaliate! Thou they dont attack against enemy troops but to destroy the enemy keep. It's more hectic than any other games of this genre and totally worth it!

Defenders of Ardania review

Defenders of Ardania is tower defense game set in the Majesty universe. Which basically means it's a tower defense game set in a fantasy world for those who don't know Majesty.

The game has you protecting your base while attacking the enemy's, using units you can send out to cause damage. Your towers not only give you the ability to defend yourself but also expand your territory. Meaning I can place towers closer to your base whenever I set up a tower in a spot that I control. It plays out a lot like Tug of war. The tides of battle can change quickly just by sending out certain unit types and whatnot. This makes it play out more like a strategy game and less like a tower defense game. That's not to say that it doesn't have tower defense elements such as upgrading towers and having specific towers for certain enemies. It's just you focus on offense as well as defense.

The campaign is about the undead rising and you, being a King, has to protect your land from any incoming threats as well as kill everyone behind it. You travel through various locations and along the way gaining allies who end up giving you new abilities to use in battle. It all plays out like a huge tutorial, but its fun and they take you through new environments. The campaign itself can last about 2 hours or more depending on your skill. There's a nice difficulty curve to help you get used to the game so I definitely recommend a playthrough.

You can play with up to three different players which just makes the game hella intense. I mean 2 vs 2 is fair but if your partner dies unless you're godlike you'd have to really have some amazing skills to pull off a win. Free for all is even more frantic so I definitely give a hats off to them for making the game really enjoyable.

The graphics are serviceable. The models and textures don't look so great when you zoom in but it's bright and colorful. There's plenty of environments they take you to so you never really feel like you're going to a reskinned area. The settings however are lacking. I can't even set the game to windowed mode which is a pretty obvious setting to have for a PC game.

The soundtrack is pretty good but sometimes it overlaps the sound effects a bit toooo much. There is some repitition but as a whole it's not annoying. The voice acting however sucks, and there's no way to skip it. You can skip the loading screen dialogue but the introduction to each level you cannot. So if you restart after a loss you have to put up with hearing the same voices over and over and over again.

Defenders of Ardania is great combination between tower defense and strategy, if you love tower defense games then I definitely suggest getting it. However, if you hate these types of games I don't think it's going to persuade you into thinking otherwise.
