GAME SUMMARY

Dwarfs!?

Rating: 3.5 (10 votes cast)

'Dwarfs!?' offers an addictive, fast paced arcade-like experience, with plenty of difficulties and game modes to play around in!

As the new overseer for your underground Dwarf base, your job is to manage the small colony and make it as rich as possible, before they meet their inevitable doom! To survive as long as possible, you’ll have to steer and guide your greedy little fellows to the richest points in the caves, while avoiding all the dangers – so they don’t end up destroying your Town Hall and its essential supply of beer.

They explore for you, they mine for you and they fight for you - but if you don't keep an eye on them, they'll do what they do best: die for you and take everyone else with them. But, if all else fails when the Spider Queen comes for you – use the Outpost’s Dwarf Cannon and shoot Dwarfs at her!

There are only 3 certainties in this world: death, taxes and that Dwarfs always dig too deep!

Dwarfs!? They dug too deep.

By CBX posted 30th July 2011

I witnessed the 2 lads programming this little gem, I happen go to the same school as them. I remembered glancing at it the first time and wasn't that impressed, because everything was so tiny! But that was in the Beta-days. It's still tiny (they should be called tinies?! or anti-gi-ants) but I find that cute. The game have a humoristic and cartoony presentation so you won't cry rivers when a dwarf die and that will happen alot (especially in rush mode).

The game follows the simple game development mantra: The K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid) and it delivers: it's simple, addictive, fun.

Simply put, you babysit mining-crazy, greedy little dwarves and tell them what to do, and they collect gold. We like gold! Your actions cost some gold, but letting them mine for themselves is free. Without your pointers though, they have the basic intelligence of a lemming and roam free at the map and make retarded decisions. It can be both amusing and annoying (but don't worry, the digger dwarves are fairly expendable).

The graphics are hand-painted tiles with smooth animations (with the exception of the liquid). With myriads of little dwarves hacking their way to glory make the game feel alive (just like an ant farm). Things are happening constantly if you have many dwarves running around.

Every level is random generated. You send them to mine minerals and explore hollow caves. Just like in real life the caves can be water-filled or a hole lot of lava (pun intended). Sometimes the caves are inhabited, and the dwarves have to fight for dominance. When that happens, that's when you're about to save the day. Dam up the path, blow up holes and send out fighting warriors. Protect your home to live forever (if destroyed = game over, man).

The game comes with different gameplay modes to fill out the simple (but limited) gameplay you can do. Despite ordering around your moronic dwarves (and cleaning up after them), there isn't much to do. Fortunately the game come with several modes. I tested arcade mode with mission objectives and sandbox mode that have a high score system and unlimited time (a nod to the old school gamers). I've yet to test their tower defence, and have several modes left to test.

This game is for the people who don't have much time to spend (pick-up-and-play), is a little bit sadistic (sandbox mode), and enjoy the classic game Lemmings. And it's Indie, wee!
