GAME SUMMARY

Eschalon: Book 1

Rating: 4.1 (104 votes cast)

Eschalon: Book I is a classic role-playing game experience that will take you across massive outdoor environments and deep into sprawling dungeons as you seek to uncover the mystery of who - or what - you are.

  • A tile-built, turn-based game world where the result of absolutely every action is rolled, calculated or statistically determined. Strategy is paramount to success; careful skill management, equipment selection and magic usage will win your fights, not rapid button clicking. We are very pleased to say this is not another "action RPG".
  • Hundreds of items and dozens of creatures await your discovery. A combination of randomly generated treasure and carefully hidden goodies means that no two games will play the exact same way.
  • Unlimited character development style: Choose from 24 unique skills to make the character you want and 8 base attributes that affect your character's every action throughout the game. The game world does not scale or adjust itself to match anyone's play style, so the ease or difficulty of the game is directly related to how successful you are at developing your character.
  • Combat plays out at your pace. Eschalon: Book I features a turn-based system that allows you to roll through combat as fast or slow you want...make it fast and furious, or analyze every option for maximum advantage.
  • A non-linear storyline means that the game world is open to explore as you desire. Follow the storyline or don't...it's up to you. Just be careful where you go and who you choose to trust- the world of Eschalon can be a deadly place for an inexperienced adventurer.
  • An epic adventure that you must face alone...a single-player RPG carefully designed to feel like the great old school RPGs of the past such as Ultima®, Might & Magic®, and Wizardry®

Eschalon: Book 1 PC review

The graphics are what they are. Do not purchase this game if you are a graphics fiend. This game offers a mix of hard core and modern gameplay, more leaning towards the hardcore. Very fun, very brutal depending on your build, and very addictive. I am planning on replaying through it soon. Expect ~20 hours of gameplay for this title, which at a reduced purchase price is very worth it. Last time I checked this game was still retailing for $20 USD, worth the full purchase price in my opinion, but I'm an old schooler.

Although somewhat slow paced and rather "old school," that is half the game's charm. Fairly interesting storyline. The game is nothing intense, and so a good one to pick up for even just a few minutes when you don't want to get too involved. Good for us folk that want something laid back now and then, and can appreciate a game that's not graphics or action driven.

Eschalon: Book 1 was a great game. I really enjoyed the freedom of the world around me. Most of the puzzles in the game are not the hardest, but they are quite enjoyable. Being able to lockpick or break down doors and chest is also one of the most fun things to do. All in all, this was a great game

Eschalon: Book 1 is a great, old school RPG. The graphics are not "all that," but the story telling and ability to shape your character more than make up for this. The adventures are enjoyable, and the story is great to follow along. If you enjoy a good old-fashioned RPG and don't need stellar graphics, this is certainly worth the money.

Unlike so many other games that are just too complicated to really enjoy, Eschalon book 1 sticks to a simple formula that not only makes the gameplay a whole lot easier, but downright enjoyable as well. Eschalon Book 1 doesn't try to impress you with high end graphics, it simply offers a fantastic experience that you will spend hours playing. If you are a fan of "old school" RPG's then you owe it to yourself to give this game a try.

An excellent old school style RPG. The only thing it really lacked was variety in combat, especially for magic users. You tend to use the same offensive spells for every combat which does get repetitive, but not enough to detract from what is a good solid start to the series.

Looking forward to playing the next games in the series.

A fine enough rpg published by an independent designer. The story is decent, the mechanisms are kept simple and efficient. The isometric view (and the 800x600 resolution) is a bit minimalist and old-fashioned though. A title that will reward the devout rpg player with the long lost pleasure of old-school adventures.

From Pyschplan, "Eschalon: Book 1 is a wonderful, solid, old-school RPG. It is a little rough around the edges, but it shows off the competency and potential of its creators. It does a wonderful job of channeling those old-school computer games. This is the type of game Mom would make if she had the time to create it. It is warm and comforting — even though virtually everything in the game is just waiting to kill your character. Eschalon: Book 1 is worth the $20 admission fee. Plus, there is a pretty decent-sized demo available on Basilisk’s Web site. Go check it out. Very few companies do what they do well. Now I want to see the second installment. I cannot wait for it to be ready!"

This game has serious potential and unfortunately has serious disappointments on that potential. I was expecting a game more on the tracks of freeform RPGs like Rogue, Ancient Domains of Mystery or like mythical Gold Box SSI RPGs (Dark queen of krynn etc). When I read about `turn based`, visions of various skills, tactical strategy etc flooded my brain. I was hoping an indie company like this would forego graphical blister for kids and go for intricate skill system, variaty in races classes,

Alas this was just a turnbased diablo. The skill system is extremely dumbed down. There is absolutely NO tactical strategy, the things you can do is pretty limited anyway. hack or cast a spell.

Good parts is, this is still an old school RPG with a nice story, places to discover, chests to loot... Ok I dont want to discourage the makers of this game more, but really, there are people who dont want graphical displays, but a game of skills and `role-playing`.. My thanks.
