Eschalon: Book 2 PC review

By mbpopolano24 posted 3rd March 2012

My vote (4 stars) was a bit generous for this game, which could be a gem and it definitely can offer many hours of enjoyment. It also a nice attempt to please old-school RPG players, who could not be more disappointed with the current stream of so called AAA games (Mass Effect, for example), which could be ‘good games’ but certainly are not RPG games. The main problem with this game is that the world is so scarcely populated and your character underpowered. There are so many options for character customization (which is good and remind me of old titles as Arcanum), but since you need most skills to survive, basically you have a long time killing rats and running away (and reloading) before you can afford any significant progress. Money is scarce, good items are scarce, and if you play a mage good luck finding and being able to use a good spell (I was basically forced to use the first damaging spell I found, flaming darts, as my primary damaging spell until I reached level 12 – about 18 hours into the game). Also navigating the world is quite confusing, and the items get damaged very quickly. I know that there are options to make the game easier and I probably wasted many points in some skills instead of a more logical progress, but so would do most newbie. In sum, great game but a bit slow and frustrating.
