Empire Earth II: Gold Edition review

good strategy game, there are lots of resources to collect, which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on if you want a relatively simple game or a complex game. This game defiantly falls within the complex area of rts gaming with in depth stratagies.

Best RTS game I have played to date due to the:

1 - Diversity of playable missions

2 - Well balanced and actually TACTICAL game play

3 - Fantastic progression and 'Epoch' system

4 - decent AI. (However multiplayer really shines, with just enough politics(diplomacy) to add another dimension to the game without detracting from the RTS feel)

5 - Massive variety of units available to command.

Only negative is that sometimes building placement becomes a bit.. 'Sticky'. In particular walls, but this is rare and does not affect general play.

Well worth the few quid, and definitely a 5 star game.

Great RTS, Older and largely a resource hog but a favorite of mine because it is one of the few RTS games that will let you team up on the computer even allowing you to play total co-op where anyone can use any unit the team controls.

--NOTE FOR WINDOWS 7: you will need to run as an ADMIN to get it to take the gamespy unlock code the first time. (hours of frustration)

I was looking for a great RTS that would play well on my laptop, which doesn't have good graphics on board. I came across Empire Earth 2, and since I owned and played the original EE a lot, I figured it was worth a shot.

Needless to say, this game is huge. Of course, with that comes some complexity, and Empire Earth 2 has plenty of that. If you like a RTS game that actually has some strategy involved, but you don't want to have to think too much, Empire Earth 2 works beautifully!

The graphics have actually held up well considering everything you see in the game. It doesn't look that great when you start, but once the guns and explosions start, it gets much better. My only gripe is that there is no widescreen support, and at the moment, I can't get third party solutions to work. Still trying though.

All-in-all, a great game that will get you far more value than the few bucks you will spend on it. Good strategy without being frustrating, good large scale wars, decent graphics considering it's age, and plenty of fun to go along with it.

Being a big fan of the original Empire Earth, I tried really hard to like the sequel. It's not a bad game, but it has some major low points. If it weren't for the new direction of the series of implementing weather, territories (instead of one open map), and streamlining the upgrade process I would would have scored this a 1 or 2.

The major problems with this game are, I think, the following items. While a nice new direction, the simplified tech tree and upgrading process makes things TOO simple. The map/scenario editor is far weaker than the original EE, it's good for map making and that's about it. (no unit editing, no extended civ editing, triggers are gone and replaced with C based coding, and it's choppy sometimes) Lastly the biggest irritation for me was that I have a pretty good system here that can play a lot of newer games and this game got real slow on a 2pl/200pop map by the last few epochs even with the graphics backed off to lower settings.

All in all, if you like the original Empire Earth and want to try something different while retaining the same basics of the original, then give this one a try.

I have been playing Empire Earth for a while now, and this one is far different than the original. It is a little bit more complex comparatively, and the interface takes a little getting used to, but overall, I like it better than the original. The games can go on for hours as I like to play on a huge map most of the time, but that's what makes it so interesting. The graphics are so so, but on my old dinosaur of a computer, that is good since I don't think it could handle much more. Overall, I am happy with my purchase. The download and install was seamless and easy. I was up and running in less than five minutes.

Empire Earth II is much different from the first, it has a much more complex and non-traditional system. The game map is separated into provinces, when a player has a capitol in the province, they gain control of it. You are able to build in your own provinces, and your villagers will harvest faster in provinces you own. Some structures are limited to a number per province, along with the fact that population can't increase much without capturing more. You are not able to build in enemy provinces, so you must use strategy to take out and take over other provinces to win, rather than just send a huge army to raid things. There is also the addition of roads, which can be built to increase the seep of your units. Ages are advanced with tech points (which can be earned over time by garrisoning villagers in universities), each age has a set of technologies which each have a cost in tech points, after a certain amount of technologies have been bought, you can either continue buying technologies (which will all go away the next age for research, but their effects won't), or you can save tech points to advance to the next age. There are numerous other features making this game greatly different from the first in the series, and not nearly as simple to grasp, but it is still a great game.

This game is pretty great.

The depth of this game goes pretty deeply, something that many RTS miss. Don't discount it for it's old age, there is still quite a bit of fun to be had here. From the mass amount of civilizations, to units to structures.

If you're an RTS fan, give this a try.

My only negative thing towards this game, is the graphics ... I understand the time that this came out. The effects themselves are nice, but I can't get over the models and how they animate. They remind me of Age of Empires 1. Age of Empires 3 type of graphics are what I had expected. This might be a bit unfair of me to rate it down because of that, but it is bothersome to me.

Great RTS game if you like longer, more strategic games. I played the first Empire Earth Gold quite a bit. It had more depth and planning than other games of the same genre, but was still fun. It's not as fast to build up and get going as say Ages of Empires 2, which is a great game, but great for those longer length games.

There's more depth to this one than the first one, and the learning curve can set some back. It's worth it if you can sink some time into it to play it. It's not hard to learn at all, pretty easy if you're used to these kinds of games, and very rewarding when you get the hang of it.

Be ready for some very long games. This ones definitely worth getting. Especially for the price.

Empire Earth II builds upon the Empire Earth I formula and expands upon it: but while it does feel better at some areas it became somewhat painfully hard on micromanagement, and you would do well in avoiding this game if you are not one of those who like micro.

For those of you who do, however, you'll find one of the best RTS games outta there: the sheer depth of the game will make you feel like you are at the same time building a civilization, commanding and army and paving the way for scientific enlightenment... it's like a mixture of Civilization and Age of Empires, a grandiose blend, if you will.

Graphics wise the game is somewhat cartoonish, but it's serviceable.

Sound effects? I don't even remember them... nothing noteworthy.

Music? Forgettable.

The gameplay is where the game really shines.

All in all, a 4/5 for me.

Well this game beats most other RTS games hands down (except Red Alert 2 and Age of Empires 2). This game can keep you hooked for hours and hours.

1. Gameplay - It has got the basics of any RTS game. But it has got even more. You are supposed to be gathering a few basic resources - Food, Wood, Stone by gathering them. and knowledge by acquiring them with the help of scholars in universities. There are also a variety of additional resources like Tin. Saltpeter, Iron, Oil and Uranium that will be available to you as you progress through the ages. One of the most interesting aspect of this game is that it has removed the individual improvements for the units as it had done in Empire Earth. Instead the units can be upgraded to an Elite and finally a Veteran standard. A new addition to the game is the Manager System. We have a Diplomacy Manager that allows us to make detailed Trade and Peace treaties with our opponents. We have a Citizen Manager that helps us to allocate Citizens to resource gathering and other duties using a world map with the location of the resources. But my favorite is the War Plans Manager. Using this manager you can send detailed drawings of your schemes and plans to attack your enemy along with your ally. For example, you might ask him to attack a border of an opponent with a small diversionary force while, you carry out another attack on the other wall. You might even ask them to carry out a massive bombing of a section of their kingdom so as to allow you to gain access into the territory.

2. Story - Nothing mentionable

3. Music - The music of the game is superb and lucid.

4. Graphics - Well Mad Doc has yet again tried to implement a 3D environment to the Empire Earth franchise. But it has messed up a bit. In any case it is millions of times better than the graphics provided in Empire Earth. However, with such an awesome gameplay the graphics can be overlooked.

A must have for anyone who love the RTS games. For those who don't, this game is sure to make you fall in love with this genre.

Really fun game good concept but it is an outdated game so being outdated the AI is not as good as an RTS made today but it your computer lacks the good graphics for the newer RTS games then Empire Earth 2 is a good game for you to play. With 15 epochs to advance through and many different types of buildings and units you can create to make your civilization the strongest. With the expansion you can even create your own civilization although you dont actually create new ones you just take certain advantages other nations get and put them into one. Great game, dated, but also a lot of fun.

A very nice game. The game engine is a little bit outdated, but it has a complex and intriguing gameplay and many interesting game variants. Its far more richer in variety than Age of Empires III.

Everyone who likes strategy games should give it a try, particularly with regard to the low price.

One thing:

Don'T buy this.

The graphic is really ugly (and i have quite low standards growing up in the nineties) and makes it quite hard to distinguish between units. The gameplay is tideous and gets repeative very fast.

It is, in short, a bad Age of Empires clon.
