GAME SUMMARY

Europa Universalis 3: In Nomine

Rating: 4.7 (1366 votes cast)

Start in October 1399 and the coronation of Henry IV of England. Experience over 50 more years of gameplay, experiencing the Byzantine Empire, Tamerlane and the end of the Hundred Years War.

Better overview of the decisions needed to shape the future of your country. Strive to create Great Britain, Make Paris worth a Mass, or institute an East Indian Trade Company. Act, rather than react, and implement decisions on both country and province level, with the new decision system, including hundreds of different decisions depending on situation.

Experience the new Mission System, where the player and AI alike will be given goals to achieve, providing endless replayability by guiding history along different tracks every time.

Rebels with a Cause. There are countless types of rebels, all with different goals, and different abilities. You may get colonial rebels in your colonies determined to get representation or independence, you may get reactionary nobles rising up to put the serfs back where the belong. Crush them by force, or negotiate with them, or even worse, watch them enforce their demands on your country.

Religious tolerance now depends on the ideas and decisions you take, making it a new layer of strategy. As cardinals stay loyal longer, the power of the Papal Controller has grown, as he can now excommunicate rulers, and call crusades against infidels.
Revised AI, focusing on strategic top level goals, with support for fully scriptable logics.

Europa Universalis 3: In Nomine review

If you've only got the Vanilla game, and haven't gotten one of the larger packs, then, of course, you're doubtless going to be choosy about how far you want to go with the expansions. Once you've got Napoleon's Ambition, though, In Nomine is a must-have. More than fifty years of gameplay, bringing in a period sorely missing from the vanilla - the Hundred Years' War. Being able to play in this era is worth the price of this expansion all by itself, in my opinion, but there's so much more - particularly that Rebels actually have coherent reasons for rebelling, so they act far more consistently, and the addition of missions to give some direction, if you want it, to your game.

Though I would recommend getting *everything*, if you must only get a few, In Nomine is truly worth it to simply add more - as an expansion should do - to Europa Universalis III.

A great improvement.

It makes going for World Domination easier, as well as allowing you to restore the old world order with a Byzantine Empire.

Best of all are the national and religious descisions allowing you to shape your nation more effectively.

An excellent game, just when I though EU3 couldn't get any better, this came along. An excellent game, with more detailed provincial and national options, making the game more complex and even more attractive. The extension of the timeline also adds factions like the Byzantine Empire and Aquileia, which were unavailable before. All around, an excellent game, highly recommended.

The second expansion to EU3 and it brings so much more than Napoleon's Ambition.

There's the mission system, to give some guidance and purpose to both player and the AI. It functions quuest-like: do X to get reward Y.

Probably the best feature of In Nomine is the revamped rebel system. Several types of rebels now exist, depending of their goals and they can prove to be much more of a challenge than before, when dealing with rebels was basically a whack-a-mole.

In Nomine in a way reinvented EU3, so don't miss out on it!

In Nomine is a worthy expansion for EU3, adding 50 years of gameplay before the previous game/expansion, letting you start at 1399 instead of 1453. This adds the declining Byzantine Empire to the possible states you can play with, along with more possibilities during the Hundred Years War between France and England. Start your game in the Dark Ages, instead of just at the end of it, and build your empire.

An extremelly interesting and bright game. It is one of those games where you don't realize how much time has passed when you are playing it. Historically accurate compared to many of the available titles. Playing it will make you completely addicted with the extra bonus of providing you with a good history lecture as you play it. A must to all strategy and history lovers.

A welcome expansion for one of Paradox Entertainment's best-selling titles. It provides more balance in the game system, and more things to do with the expansion of the decision and the mission systems. Plus, you get more than 50 years of extra play, which mainly means that you get to save Byzantium from the Ottomans -with lots of luck and the liberal use of the "surrender"/reload functions...

Still, the state system of the game is still unstable enough. Paradox hasn't come yet with a system which would both encourage gradual growth, and be dynamic enough to keep the smaller nations from getting wiped out within the game's first century. But of course players whose desire for historical accuracy verges on the fanatical (i.e. me) are fewer than those who just wish to conquer the (game-)world.

A really great add on to an already great game. Besides the change in the starting date which gives us the chance to play with more nations (including a chance for us Byzantinophiles to try and reinstate the Imperium Romanum - Vasileia Romaeon) it also adds way more depth to almost everything. Especially rebellions and religious decisions have a way more realistic feel to them now. I haven't tried the two more recent expansions yet, but In Nomine has surely made me want to do so at first chance!

In Nomine is a great add on for EU3. It adds so much flavor to the game with the different types of rebellions and the mission system! The missions are realistic and provide a great nudge in the right direction if you are ever stuck. The earlier starting point is also a huge plus!

A must buy for anyone that liked EU3. However I'd pick up the chronicles version, as the game plays even better with all the expansions. However the AI improvements and the added timescale of this package is a large part of that pack, so if you for some reason want to play an earlier version or just enjoy the game one expansion at the time, this could be it!

Europa Universalis 3 (EU3): In Nomine is an amazing game that is sure to interest both hardcore history buffs, as well as people who enjoy a game of epic scale. After choosing any nation within the time period 1399-1821, the player is given free rein to do whatever he or she wants. Starting as England, the player may choose to abandon your territories on mainland Europe and go exclusively for uniting the islands and then focusing on exploration and colonization. However, they also have the choice of pursing their core provinces in France and construct an empire from Europe. The options are limitless.

There are very few problems within the game itself; however, if the player visits the forums for the game, they can receive help from the game developers themselves, who frequently take suggestions from the gaming community at large. Its steep learning curve may throw off casual gamers, but once they get into the meat of the game, they will not be able to stop. By far one of the best RTS (sort of) games around and I advise anyone who is even slightly interested to purchase it.

This expansion radically changes the Europa Universalis III game. Napoleon's Ambition introduced some nice changes which improved the game in important ways but the fundamental gamemplay remained fairly similar to pre-expansion EU III.

This expansion altered many fundamental characteristics of the game to make it more balanced and changed many aspects of the game to make them operate in a better way. The gameplay changes from this expansion make the core game better and so changes from the other expansions become more beneficial in combination with them.

This is a much better expansion than Napoleon's Ambition. The improved rebel system makes rebellions more connected to the grievances of the province and makes it easier for the player to determine why revolts occur. It also makes inspiring rebellions through espionage more useful. The mission and decision systems are good for making countries play more distinctly from each other, which is one of EU3's weaknesses, as well as giving the AIs more guidance so they have goals beyond expansion. If you own EU3 this is absolutely worth picking up.

Being something of a Byzantophile, the option to play as the Byzantines was the clear selling point that put me over the edge, but the host of other features removed all doubt.

One of the most impressive features in my mind is the changes they made to rebels - since the rebels now have goals and aims the game itself feels much more immersive. No longer are you playing rebel wack-a-mole, but fending off religious dissidents, noble rebellions and the like. If you liked EU3, you'll love the additions in In Nomine.

The most important expansion to the best grand strategy game so far! Napoleon's Ambition added some good new content, but In Nomine adds a world of new gameplay, all of which works perfectly (when you patch it)! The newest expansion, Heir to the Throne also adds a lot of content and gameplay, but none of it is as polished and important to your gaming experience as anything you'll find in In Nomine!

If you own eu3 already, you NEED this expansion. The AI is much better, and the earlier start date lets you play as the BYZANTINE EMPIRE, which is awesome. It adds more of a strategy element to eu3, instead of just being a war game. Now you need diplomacy to not get crushed, you can't just roll over all of your enemies. If you're planning on buying eu3, get this.

The In Nomine expansion makes Europa Universalis III the game that many fans expected when it was first released.

In many ways, the game is not only made better by the stated new features, but the dozens of other smaller tweaks that simply make the game more challenging and engaging. The game simply feels more realistic - the AI is both more canny as well as being much less prone to stupid mistakes. A good measure of the improved AI is that even experienced players consistently remark how the AI occasionally catches them with their pants down.

This is a remarkable expansion to an already fantastic game. The AI is much more fun to play against, and the new Rebels with a cause system adds more depth. The new Mission/Decision systems also adds more, making more little objectives for a player to complete.

By SinghRathorTari posted 10th November 2009

This is great expansion to the EU series; it includes more depth than before. The Graphics are a big improvement over its predecessor as it has moved to a more 3d engine, the game play is smooth as the days and months flow smoothly on. The interface is straightforward to learn and should be familiar to people who already know the series. The sound remains almost the same as the last EU. In terms of plot you can take control of virtually any country that existed in the time frame of the game, once you have control It’s yours to do with as you please, however be wary as this like its predecessors this is not a strategy game where everything depends on who has the biggest war chest or horde. EUIII is a game more about decisions, actions and consequences. Every action has a reaction; therefore there is a lot to think about before you make you moves in the game. I would recommend this game to gamers who like games where you have to think out your moves carefully as it’s a game about decision making and weighing up probabilities. I think this is the best grand strategy game at present; graphically it looks nice, the interface is good, it’s historically accurate and covers all the aspect you would expect: Government, Policy, Religion, Trade, Diplomacy, Exploration, Colonisation, Land Warfare, Naval Warfare, Leadership......

The last expansion of the EU3 series. Like the NA expansion, In Nomine makes a great game even better and adds an earlier start date. My only wish is that Paradox would add to the end date so that the game ends around 1880 instead of 1821. You can manually change the end date but the history and tech won't be there. Also In Nomine is well supported by mods from the fan base.

A game of Europa Universalis 3's scope will never be complete. However, both the original game and the expansion Napoleon's Ambition felt slightly disappointing to me who was used to Europa Universalis 2. While I appreciated the move away from historical determinism, the third installment seemed a bit too unstructured. There were other issues as well, but most of them were remedied in this, the third expansion. The new missions gave some structure both in terms of suggestions for the player and more transparent game mechanics, and dozens of other game features were improved. There is still some imbalance, some countries tend to expand monstrously and without mods the history in an In Nomine game is still just not plausible, but with all the fixes, I finally enjoy the game enough to give it five stars. For those of you who want an ultimate strategy experience - when you feel comfortable with the game, try the Magna Mundi mod. It improves the game in so many ways you never thought was possible, but on the other hand, it's really, really hard, so get comfortable with the original game first.

This expansion really complements EU3. It's obviously my opinion and others might not feel the same, but I always thought that EU needed some in-game goals and not only the ones that are set by yourself, so the missions were a really great addition.

The decision system also adds more choices and also involves objectives (as you need to fulfill certain conditions to pass decisions).

Even though EU3 was really complete alone, and then with NA, it's even more complete with In Nomine and any player that buys EU3 should get this one too.

In Nomine is the 2nd Expansion for Europa Universalis. It wonderfully expands on what was already added with NA and really does complete the game.

EU3 itself wasn't too historical in content but the new missions/decisions system goes a long way to improving that. While it doesn't guarentee a historical game it does give it a lot more flavour and it rewards the player for meeting certain requirements.

National Decisions have been rebalanced and a few more tech level requirements have been handed out which has been done so very well, Really making the player choose between numerous options of where they want to guide their game.

Overall a wonderful addition to EU3 it expands on EU3 and NA wonderfully, it adds a lot more historical flavour and adds much more of a challange even for veterens of the series. It is a must have expansion for anyone who buys EU3 and NA.

The extended timeline allows the player to experience some events such as the Hundred Years War in a greater scope. The additions to the Papal System are also a good addition. Being able to launch a crusade and excommunicate someone are excellent powers and really offer a reason to gain favour.

EU III In Nomine is a wonderful addon to an already great global strategy game. If you have a knack for deep strategy and long to have the ability to steer the fortunes and the destiny of your empire vis a vis human or AI controlled competotors then this is the best that is out there. The add on gives you more leverage to shape your country or empire destiny in a more realistic and challenging environment where the AI will act not in predicable ways so with more gusto than ever before. Thinking creatively about how to expand your empire will necessitate carefu diplomacy, planning and forethought, you cannot just go out there and hammer everyone by force , this game doesn't work that way, in fact if you approach it like that your gonna loose big time prestige (just like George Bush did when he invaded Iraq with UN approval), and may invite others to form alliances against you in order to bring you down. EU III and In Nomine are addictive in a positive way, you learn alot about international history and get hooked not because of glitzy graphics but rather because of deep challenging historical strategy gaming, its amazing to replay history or change the course of it, and have the ability to choose any country or empire that existed back then. Think about, all games you see nowadays on the shelves...they are more about mindless repetitive killing then creative thinking. Go get EU III - and expansions NA & INom , Vikki, Hearts of Iron and forget the rest !!

Another addition to a great game. For people who enjoyed the historical aspects of EU2, this goes a long way to covering this. Be warned: it is consistently harder (more realistic, and not worth not buying it for), particularly fiscal management. This time you have to choose a path. One aspect not mentioned is that it tells you on the peace screen if they are going to accept, which is more realistic, I think, but takes out an element of chance. Arabs stronger to start with; colonisation harder (particularly if you fix leaders to history).

The powers that develop ... might not include you.
