GAME SUMMARY

Gain Ground

Rating: 3.5 (333 votes cast)

Gain Ground combines elements of shoot em up, strategy and puzzle gaming to create a unique retro arcade experience. Play as a range of characters fighting through levels or plotting an unlikely path past hordes of enemies - the aim of the game is to either guide your character to the exit zone or kill all of the enemies as you advance. With a wide choice of weapons available, you will start off with primitive bows and arrows and work towards hi-tech weaponry.

Features

  • Gain Ground started life as an arcade game in 1988 and ported to the SEGA Master System in 1990 and SEGA Genesis in 1991.
  • You can play as twenty different characters, each with their own strengths, weaknesses and unique weapons.
  • The final level of the game is known for requiring suicide tactics and the wasting of your character stock, rather than actual skill.

Gain Ground review

This game is so fun and ahead of its time. I played it recently with a friend and it's incredibly complex and diverse for the time. It has fun multiplayer and can be really challenging, but I think it's definitely a great game to check out for a nostalgia trip!

Hmm... well let me start off by saying I never played Gain Ground back in the day, but trying it out now it seems... OK. A shoot-em-up / strategy hybrid, which I'm sure was totally mind-blowing back in the day doesn't have the same impact anymore. Graphics are worse that what I usually expect from games of that generation and plot is non-existent. I bet this review would be different if I had played the gam when it was new, but I didn't.

As an old arcade game it has very dated graphics. And it can be rather frustrating at times. But at least you don't have to keep feeding it coins while you learn how to conquer each level.

While it's true that this game has dated graphics and close to no story it still has great gameplay. You can easily pour hours replaying it and don't get bored but then again if you are reading this you probably knew that.

Absolutely recommended if you ask me. Cheap and fun, plus you get to relive your childhood or experience what we experienced back in the day when it was released.

Interesting game, but light on the plot. It explored some unique gameplay ideas for its time, but falls flat when playing it in a modern context. I'd only recommend it to people really into older SEGA games or who enjoyed this when it came out.

It doesn't seem like a game heavy on strategy, but Gain Ground is nigh impossible if you don't think through what character you're using for each part of the stage. The best I can describe it is as a strategy Smash TV. It's decently fun, and with the bonus of saves at any point gives even the worst player a chance at beating the entire game.

All I can say is this game hasn't aged well. And when it doesn't have much of a story and gets repetetive after a while no reason to et the game if you didn't play it back in the day.

An absolute classic, which has aged very well. Lots and lots of fun to be had with it, just dont expect much of a story at all. Big plus is the amount of characters you can play as, all with different strategies to them. And the best thing about these re-releases is the ability to save anytime you want!

An interesting, yet strange game. For some reason you play as a man and woman with guns and a spear throwing native, fighting archers, swordsmen, and start throwing men in Roman-esc clothing. You can apparently collect other characters if you get little miniature figures of them and lead them over to the exit. Wasn't able to do this as I kept either killing everything before I got to the exit, or dying before I could get the miniature over there.

I don't get the storyline at all. At one point there was a statue of some kind of devil-looking thing with its head spinning around shooting out fireballs. What??? What's that have to do with the elements already in the game?

It was interesting, but not for me at all. It kind of plays like Goof troop for the SNES, but without the puzzles.

An okay game but unfortunately not a classic as Chaos Engine or other Sega games of the time and a bit too challenging to be funny. There are plenty of other games out there that are worth your money.

another Sega genesis classic, cant say much about the graphics 16bit sweetness. The game is simple, navigate around the screen while shooting up stuff that come in the way. the difficulty and challenge is good but levels get boring after a while, overall a good game to pass time for a while

This is again another Sega arcade classic. The gameplay is very simple: you have to eliminate enemies from a level (one screen per level) by using various characters, each characters having different skills. In practice, this is another extremely difficult game which doesn't really stand the test of time and players have much less patience nowadays. It was fun playing it but I think the nostalgia is the important factor here when thinking about buying it.

This game has brought me a lot of fun, even though I had never heard of it before I got it. The levels are great and varied and require some strategic thinking. Unlocking new charcters is a good way to keep up the players interest.

I'm going to keep this really short: In my opinion, this game hasn't aged well. Unless you played it back in the game, and would like another run through it for nostalgia's sake, don't get it.

Downloading and installing the game went flawlessly, and SEGA's GUI is nice as well, so if you do long for re-experiencing those "good old times", I don't know what you're waiting for! Get it! Naow!

Gain Ground... Truely a SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive classic! This shooting game is incredibly unique with the fact that shooting, stragedy and puzzle combined into the game made it remarkable! As it was on the SEGA Mega Drvie don't expect this game to have graphics or gameplay like, for example, Call of Duty or Halo. If you enjoy classic games then I recommend this one for you!

Gain Ground is a very unique retro experience and a true SEGA Masterpiece. With different character and varied levels, is a very fun and strategic game. A shoot-em-up with an strategy twist, since not all characters attack the same way.

As an extra plus, it works flawlessly even on modern computers, and the graphics don't look that much aged.

This is a must buy for shoot-em-up fans and SEGA fans alike.

Gain Ground, an early real time strategy, where your general premise is to get your characters from the start to Exit safely in 200 seconds. The levels get significantly more difficult and interesting in design. This is definately one of those games that has the potential to grow on you with time, if you can get past the difficulty level and the dated graphics. The graphics and sound are obviously dated, but if you are into retro games, that shouldn't really affect your decision to purchase this title.

Great action game from the Genesis/Mega Drive era. I remember spending many afternoons and evenings playing this games, but unfortunately the game is too outdated for today's standards.
