Good Intentions review

By ianelliott500 posted 14th December 2010

I was pleasantly surprised upon buying this game here. I was intrigued by the screenshots, and while this is certainly no ordinary platformer that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Good Intentions might best be summed up as a feel-good game, and I'm not really even sure if many other games can fit that category.

Because at heart, that's what this game is about...it's about doing good deeds, and that's certainly not a bad thing at all.

Good Intentions is a beautiful side scroller. The backgrounds look nice, the music is serene and the animation is passable. It's also an interesting setting, being in historical France. It also conveys the story through use of a narrator and through the game itself. It would have been nice to have cutscenes, but the story still remains strong.

It's easy enough to die and the game sometimes has difficulty sensing key strokes, but the game never punishes you for death. Some more choice might be nice in some of the quests, but then that might detract from the point of the game. Boss fights seemed ridiculous and out of place with a Simon Says style, but it worked well enough. It could also be a little longer (I blew through it in a couple of hours), but there are varying difficulties.

In all honesty, this game is likely best suited to a very young audience as the game can teach them the most, and they will have less problems with its flaws than older players. But Good Intentions feels unique in its subject matter, and I heartily salute the developers for working on a game in an interesting time period and for making the game focus on exactly what its title suggests.
