This expansion of Hearts of Iron III cleans up bug issues and gameplay issues. It creates a new game play interaction that builds on the original. A must buy!

Adds a lot to a great game.

HOI3 is already a great game but, the dlc adds ton of new feature to the game. It adds a lot of realistic factors. If you like the hoi3 game strong suggestion to have this with it. Better management of supplies in this dlc also easier to tell if units have supplies. Also with all the mods the best grand strategy in my opinion.

Adds a few nice things. The map is more historically accurate, and there is a new partisan system you can use once you are conquered to make life difficult for your occupiers. The AI feels a lot stronger and there is better co-ordination for the allies. The game seems smoother as well as a whole, and it runs faster (for me at least). Not bad, but not worth 20 bucks.

Hearts of Iron I and II i love it for their interesting and new approach in strategy games but HOI3 was my biggest deceptions. When it was launched was unplayable due large amount of bugs. I continued to buy each expansion hoping to see bugs fixed but was only money wasted. Probably the authors tried to create a very accurate simulation of wwii but it exceeded their real capabilities to implement.

Neat expansion with exceptional performance boost due to quad-core processor support.

New theatre info screen and more. To enjoy HoI3, you need the expansion. Otherwise you're better off with HoI2.

Finally we have multicore support.

Also much new feature wich enrich the game. There are frequently sale actions, so if you can wait, you can get it maybe with 75% off and then it is a no brainer to buy if you like HOI3.

The game begins with which nation you decide to start with, your choice defines the game experience an enormous amount and once you've understood the mechanics it becomes more and more fascinating to pick apart the roles your choices can play in the three way faction war. I found it a must to tell your HQ's to run on automatic after setting the objectives, also don't shy from the larger nations, playing small, poor countries like Tibet is like watching grass grow.

Hearts of Iron 3: For the Motherland review

By Mirco posted 24th January 2012

Hearts of Iron III expansion "For the motherland" adds some depth to several areas of the gameplay, which have so far been either neglected or had very unrealistic game mechanics.

One of the delightful changes is setting of wargoals, either at the start of the war, or every six months of its duration. This finally deviates from the quite ahistorical "Total war" approach of the previous HoI games, which must have thus been tweaked by hardcoded events. In actual history, the wargoals often changed: for example during Winter war the Soviet Union first strived to create a puppet communist Finland, only to settle for some territorial concessions after the disastrous course of the war. The same goes for the UK in the first two years of the war, until the US entry into the war, the UK wanted to deal Germany one strong blow (for example at failed german invasion of the british isles) thus getting favourable negotiating conditions - the unconditional surrender was only set as a goal in 1942. Now the game allows setting of wargoals from territorial acquisiton to instalation of an ideologicaly friendly government, to some unique real historical outcomes like "The Fall of France".

Another aspect that has been quite neglected in all previous HoI games is partisan warfare - until this expansion it was just a one-dimensional nuisance, even though HoI III introduced several different "flavours" of rebels. Now finally the rightful holder of occupied territories can build up an Underground resistance system, which can fuel an all-out uprising, should the conditions be favourable.

Another small but welcome addition are the Strategic resources - since the whole system of raw resources in HoI is very abstract, these rare resources produced by just a few provinces in the whole world, add very nice bonuses to the province holders Production and warfare and thus add a nice flavor to the game.

As those few examples demonstrate, HoI III: For the Motherland is a great expansion with only one flaw - it doesn't expand the playable period beyond 1948.

I don't know exactly why, but this expansion has made of Hearts of Iron III an awesome game.

In the paper, new features not seem so important (few additions in diplomacy, spies and politics, new rebel management, strategic resources...) but in addition with the ones added on former expansion Semper Fi (strategic effects, decisions...) they all have solved the main handicap of vanilla HoI3: lack of inmersion as well as 'rawness' of gameplay. There are now good reasons for Germany of protecting Ploesti of Allied bombardments, or conquering Norway.

It also includes changes of the map which make it more accurate and interesting to play (infrastructure and terrain revised), it solves a bug that made a little plain land combat (and an annoying one with overseas supplies)... and overall, the AI has had a sensible improvement.

Hearts of Iron "For the Motherland" make sense of saying that a whole is more than the addition of its parts. If you already have HoI3, its expansions are a must. If you like playing WWII, it's a crime you miss this game.

Since the release of the rough diamond HOI1 a decade ago this franchise has seen many incredible improvements. For the wargamer looking for the best strategic WW2 game, this is it. Detailed, very modable, graphically nice, and very fun to play even from the point of smaller nations. Recent AI improvements mean less micro-management unless you want it. Large group of very talented peolpe working on modding. Modding yourself much harder than earlier versions.

For the Motherland also has some amazing new little things that just make the game better. The new partisan function really did it for me. There was something missing as partisans were something you never really ever saw before. Now you can play as Poland and have fun even if you do lose.

Really a must have buy for HOI 3 players. I'm totally and completely satisfied.

I waited until the 2.05 patch, but for anyone except the casual HOI3 player, FTM is a must. Reasons, as probably stated above:

1. It's the only version that will continue to be supported with patches.

2. It's the only version that most modders will continue to support

3. It scrolls and plays as smooth as glass based on my limited experience so far.

4. The included battle scenarios are an HOI3 first and are actually worth playing. In fact, they are a good intro into the game system, as all you have to worry about is the military.

With SF/FTM HOI3 is slowly becoming what it should of been on release! The latest patch provides a vastly improved experience, but there are still significant flaws with the AI system (covered in depth below, so I'll not repeat them) and numerous random CTD.

That said, it's a great way to kill a day or two - even better if you can smash a few friends on the way.

By david3907 posted 25th September 2011

Poor add on. The supply system is a joke. Playing Germany my units are constantly running out of suppy whereas the allies seem to run on air. The inability to control allies make the game unplayable as there all ignore your requests. RAF fighter are undefeatable, in 1940 RAF fighters are over the borders of Germany blowing me out of the sky. The AI also has a fixation with amphibious invasions with the Germany coast contantly being invaded and having this ability to survive with no supplies and despite being defeated reappear for no apparent loss.

Another great expansion pack for Hearts of Iron 3

The most important improvement of this expansion over the original is possibly the performance increase. Where as the original HoI3 was slow in many computers, with FTM I'm able to play at blazing fast speeds even in my laptop computer.

Many new features make this a essential addon to any HoI3 player. Improves the game a lot over the original HoI3 and the Semper Fi Expansion.

Hearts of Iron 3 : For the Motherland review

By adante45 posted 18th September 2011

The game is an interesting version and I enjoyed the variety. That being said. The Allied AI shows a distressing tendency to overcommit in 1939/40. During the Lowlands campaign. The Allies always invade the North German Plains or Denmark. This results in the complete loss of the "BEF" and almost as frequently 1-2 South African armor units. Various other nations(normally India or Canada) will then invade by themselves resulting in additional allied losses at a time they can ill afford it. The normal result of this is that Italy can run amok in the Mediterranean area and that Egypt/Suez canal is very vulnerable.

The other noticeable issue is the stripping of the UK garrison force. Frequently there is no more than two full strength units and 4-6 garrison bde's on hand. This makes the UK easily vulnerable to a German invasion of Mediocre strength.

When the Allies have overcomitted the Game will normally be over by late 1941. The Germans really have no reason for an invasion of Russia. They can easily neutralize the Allies and leave just America as a factor by mid 1941.

The Strategic materials is a great idea and well worth examining.

This expansion greatly improves the AI for HOI3. It allows a more detailed control of theater behavior. It also adds several ease-of-use improvements, such as the "dismiss all" button for leaders -- a boon to players who don't want to hunt around Germany to find Guderian et al. The main disadvantage, with any HOI expansion, is the downtime for your favorite mod to catch up. If you are addicted to DICE, keep a watch on its forum before buying the expansion. (Black ICE, by the way, already has a compatible version, but without most of the ICE equipment. August Storm has kept pace, and includes a very aggressive Japanese AI that uses -- gasp! -- CAS missions by carrier air groups.) In the end, if you play HOI3, you must have this expansion.

Unrealistic scenarios and bug-rich game

With ftm rebasing flight units makes them to loose most of their organization.

French/RAF air force are reducing ground units organization to zero in two bombing runs, while trying to do the opposit with much more advanced technology achieves almost nothing.

It is impossible to completely destroy enemy air units on the ground (bombing for a year is not enough). Even when all their resources, infrastructure, airbase completely destroyed their air units keep recovering during constant bombardment.

Panthers or King Tigers with 150mm armour and with advanced mechanized infantry cannot beat a single french infantry unit on flat terrain.

Enemy submarines are almost completely immune to any kind of attempt to engage them (sortie, patrol, intercept).

Naval strike almost never results in engagement between bomber and surface units.

And so on, and so on ...

All in all I have never seen such a badly made product like the semper fi and the ftm.

I installed the first one for three times and I had to unistall it always because it rendered the game totally unenjoyable.

But the worst is the experience what Paradox calls 'Tech Support'. Everyone can decide it for himself whether he would like to get an answer for the above inquiry like I did as this:

Veklmaarschalk (moderator on the Paradox forum site - the only 'support' provided by them)

"Well to bad you don't like the game, but none of your issue's has anything to do with tech-support, so thread closed."

It is basically let's say complaining about a basketball that is not bouncing back from the floor and having a response from the maker or vendor that 'it's too bad, why do not you just play soccer with it or simply buy another one'.

This kind of arrogance is just over the top by my opinion. This clearly shows that selling crap for naive and basically helpless young kids makes no problem for many people for the profit.

As a father myself I do not recommend this product to anyone looking for quality games!

I'll be honest here, people. I originally had no intention of even being interested in For the Motherland when it was first announced. I have been playing since the original HOI, and I just did not think I would be able to get any excitement up and running for yet another expansion.

The that sly Artfox sent me an email asking if I would be interested in being a beta for the game. At first I discounted the whole idea, but it grew on me. So I accepted even though I knew I was going to be challenged for time due to some large projects at work.

I am so glad I did. Watching this expansion blossom was a joy for me. The game has come a long way from the original release where a lot of gamers were very upset, although I personally never had any speed issues with the game and the bugs I encountered were all minor to me. This is an excellent game of World War 2 with many features to become engrossed with. Options to turn over various sections of game play to a fairly competent AI so that you can concentrate on the sections that you want to is a great plus in my book, although once you get comfortable with the game I see many who never turn over any aspect of the game to computer control.

Finally, there are some users/modders who just will not leave the game stand still and are constantly adding, modifying, and improving on the game. This game, I suspect, will always be in a state of constant flux. There will always be just one more improvement that people will see needs to be added.

In short, an excellent WWII game that deserves the title, Grand Strategy, with a huge body of players and developers who are always there to give a helping hand. The only difficulty someone may have is the sheer size and scope of this game. Some may find it overwhelming, but I would encourage anyone to give it time, take it slow, and ask questions. You may just wake up one day loving HOI 3: For the Motherland as much as I do.

Nothing but Praise for the newest add on to the Hearts of Iron series. The real reason to get this expansion is for the multi-core support and multi-threading. The boost to speed is impressive. The Battle Scenarios are fun to play if you're looking for a quick combat exercise. I haven't used the new partisan underground system that was recently introduced, nor have I used the new theater tab all that much. The AI definitely improved over Semper Fi, it also closed some long standing bugs. The strategic resources add good flavor, reasons to actually attack various countries (or get them into your faction), and aren't very unbalancing.

And as a seemingly new trend for Paradox, the game is basically perfect only about a month after release! As of 3.04 the game was more than playable, and with the newest patch of 3.05 it's moved even closer to perfection.

I prefere a less historical route for my games, therefore Nazi france or soviet USA will never make me squirm.

The new map features as well as war goals removes some of the more annoying quirks from SF.

Worth 20 euros? Yes but only in the fact that with alot of these paradox grand strategy games if you don't own it all you really do miss out on a more complete game.

If you like Alternative history, creating a small empire or just WW2 i recommend the Hoi franchise whole heartedly. If in Doubt try the Hoi3 demo, within 30 minutes you will know if you will want this game or not.

The new features are a nice addition to the HoI3 title. However, the lack of a manual of any sort makes the new features a trial by error affair. The good news is after playing a couple of games with For the Motherland installed you will catch on to the mechanics. If you are a fan of the third iteration of the HoI series this is a 'must have' expansion.

Hearts of Iron 3 : For the Motherland review

By a4rino posted 24th July 2011

The best way to review this expansion is to review its most important features:

The addition of multi-core support is a godsend for players (like me) with dual/quad core processors who had trouble completing games in previous versions. This is especially important later in the war, when the action really starts to bog down with hundreds of units and commands.

Politics have been reworked, allowing for foreign-funded coups and underground resistance networks. The latter of these features livens up the time spent under occupation if the player chooses to play as France, for example.

Finally, the new war goals system (akin to that in Victoria 2) is a welcome addition for those of us who want to explore alternate, ahistorical surrender scenarios.

Some other improvements to the interface are also present, and these all contribute to a better, faster, and cleaner experience. Overall, I'd have to say that this is Paradox's best expansion since the release of Heir to the Throne for Europa Universalis III.

"For the Motherland" is a great second expansion to the maingame and its first expansion "Semper Fi". It polishes the whole game and gives the player many more possibilities and adds more complexiity to the game. If you like HOI3 and Semper Fi this expansion is also a must have.

Hearts of Iron 3: For the Motherland review

By VanDiemen posted 21st July 2011

With this latest expansion in the Hearts of Iron III series, you definitely get much improvement over the previous HoI3 Semper Fi Expansion. One the most striking improvements obvious for anyone who has a multicore processor is the huge speed improvements in this expansion. The interface runs much more smooth and cursor directed map zoom removes any annoyance with observing the map.

The most obvious gameplay improvements is definitely the much improved AI, which is now capable of really launching proper naval invasions. Still a determined player can beat them, but they do provide extra attention and force the player to not totally neglect the French coast, when playing as Germany for example. The AI of the Soviet Union is still not good enough to really make things difficult for a determined player controlled Germany, so do not expect miracles there.

The map improvements done by the community as provided with this expansion improves the general historical feeling. Most obvious are the implementation of new "inland" harbours and urban centers, such as the Ruhr area. Also resources are much better balanced now, as Germany you can really expect resource shortages, which hurt your industry. Also the battle of the Atlantic is now much more meaningful as Great Britain itself needs to import much more resources from overseas compared to HoI3 Semper Fi, making the u-boot threat felt!

However, not all in this expansion is excellent. For example the new theatre interface holds little to no additional value and is more useful as an info tool than to really use when at war. Also the partisan system did no force me to change my strategy at all compared to HoI3 Semper Fi, so its impact on the game is rather limited.

Final comment: To all that like HoI3, I would advise to buy this moderately priced expansion. It will not dramatically alter your HoI3 gaming experience, but after getting used to this expansion, you definitely no longer want to do without.

I liked the improvements, specially the strategic resources. Now it is possible for Japan to go after Rubber and the battle of Stalingrado involves the control of Sovietic factories of vehicles. Spain gives the tungstênio for German warmachine. Since these are strategic questions posed in real World War II, i think this is good evolution for the game, for the customers who goes after a good historical simulation. I only expect a version who is compatible with GOTTERDAMMERUNG mod, which is the best mod, in my opinion.

If you already own Hearts of Iron 3 then you'll definitely want to get it, as it expands on the game. There are bugs present, but Paradox have shown themselves to be very good with releasing a steady stream of patches, so all it takes is patience. Definitely recommended.

By yanqui9 posted 8th July 2011

Overall a very good addition but unfortunately there is a game-killing bug in the 3.03 patch. Do not buy this game until it has been patched beyond 3.03. The game-killing bug is that any nation conquered automatically "auto-puppets" so Germany will puppet Poland, Denmark, France and other countries it conquers in 1940 (getting instant control of all their forces as well), causing unbalanced and very unhistorical results. You could play the 3.02 version but there are many bugs in that as well but not the auto-puppet bug. The developers promise a new patch for the 3.03 patch in a few days, so I advise putting off buying this until the auto-puppet bug has been dealt with. In fact, there is a beta patch now available at the Paradox forums but to get it you have to register the game, so you have to buy it. The good news is that this beta patch seems to fix the auto-puppet bug, if you are brave enough to install a beta patch and buy this expansion anyway.

On the other hand, the new features are very good. I like the new theater options and screen. Neutrality is now calculated differently by threat in the game and spies can no longer lower it, leading to more reliance on scripted events to lower neutrality. Once the auto-puppet bug is dealt with in the patch after 3.03, I heartily recommend this expansion for any and all HOI3 players!

After playing around with HOI3:For the Motherland last Saturday until 5:00am I can honestly say that this is a good DLC package in deed.I find the improved air map to be highly useful as it will show you a graphical representation of each air units range. The theater interface is also highly useful as it lists each theater HQ that you have and lets you know the current capabilities each Theater HQ has and what if anything they may need just make sure that you properly assign new or rearranged units to a HQ after you place them on the map or you will not get correct data(several unassigned units might be in a given theater but unassigned)

The diplomacy seems to be a bit different as well I seemed to have much stronger influence on nations when trying to get them into my camp than before. Also many more national actions have been added into the game.

I did not get to try out the partisan system or the attempt coup either I have read on various forums that some players did have issues with coups working but your nations party not being head of government(which it should if your side started the coup)Also make sure that you also fully update the game to the latest patch before you attempt to play or you will get CTDs with save games.I think also those who had issues may not have fully updated to the latest patch either I find many times when people have issues they themselves have made a mistake but do not realize it.

For me the game worked fine once fully patched.I would recommend For the Motherland to any HOI3 player it adds many very fun and useful features into the game and adds more depth to the HOI3 experience.

New air map mode is realy nice and the new info you get from all your airfields and ports is a bit more easy to get all the informations you need.

The scenarios are a nice deal, but need a bit tweaking, it is a bit too easy in some cases to win.

All over it is a good way this new addon goes.

I am looking forward to play FtM moddet, cause without ICE id miss something in HoI3 at all.

So if you like HoI3 and did like SemperFi, you will for sure like this.

Is it worth getting, i would say yes, for sure it is.

Hearts of Iron 3: For the Motherland review

By Firesaw posted 30th June 2011

HoI III: For the Motherland is an excellent addon to the HoI series. With its partisan and strategic ressources system, it adds strategic depht to the game.

The new mini campaigns are a good choice for smaller games, if you don't like to play the same campaign for days.

Also it should be mentioned, that the AI tweaks improve the game speed above the former HOI III games
