A very worthy expansion to an already great game. I really like the new spy system, as well as having some new "elite" units to create. The battle plans will also help relative newcomers as well, helping them plan their attacks.

Definitely worth the price, especially if you can get it on sale. Adds even more depth to an great experience.

TFH Definitely adds polish to the game in the form of interface improvements and more importantly improved AI. The most important reason I bought it to use it for the popular Black ICE Mod (continuation of DiDay's ICE). This expansion plus the mod make for a fantastic experience.

Ships , convoys submarines to make a punsch to your enemys supplies . Buiold harbours to get in supplies when you maka a beachhead . So to beat this game take a lot. Of course if you don't want to Think about every thing you can cheat a Little but anyway you must Think to get worrld domination. Very god game if you like stategy games and hard ones., you decide how hard . Lars

A very good addition that further tweaks and rounds out HOI3. While individually there appears to be less exciting additions in this expansion, there are numerous tweaks and optimisations along with a streamlining of options giving the player more control and at the same time making it easier to do what you want.

Bought it for the specialist units. (SS, Rangers etc.)

I also enjoy the strategic warfare part & the new lend & lease system.

Bought it at a reduced price, which was definately worth it.

This DLC further improve HoI3 and it is certainly very neccessary. While technologicall HoI3 is certainly superior to HoI2 and the spinoff, it has not really reached the polish level of its predecessor. TFH is a step forward in the right direction.

Okay was apprehensive about buying the last two expansions after HOI3 and SF,in which the game game was still broken in my opinion-but i bit the bullet. The second expansion FTM nailed all the early problems and made the game quite playable and then this expansion TFH nicely put the icing on the cake.Great game now and totally addictive and immersive for me.Okay this is how the game should have been on release but what the hell.Paradox admitted such and rewrote and fixed everything.Okay maybe at our expensive but if your an HOI2 fan this is now the king with all it's expansion.Highly recommended.

A very strong expansion for HoI 3. The deeper naval invasions are a bit overblown and are still a total micromanagement pain to initiate successfully, but there is some added depth. Have special units (such as rangers) is a cool touch which helps add some more "flavor" to the game. Lend Lease is a welcome addition which makes it easier for you to support your allies indirectly, as well as give the USA something to spend their immense IC on. As a whole the expansion is more "toppings" than "meat", but it's still a must have for HoI 3 fans. Performance seems to be better to boot.

Fantastic game of course, I thought I should be saving the five stars rating for when HOI has been made into a completely realistic history simulator, but of course, this will never happen because by the time my very high expectations and demands are met, they will have taken steps forward as well... in fact, the faster and more spectacular the development is, then the expectations only rise yet faster, with the crucial few months of latency which translates into so much fun, awe and excitement... that it drives the whole business... This satisfaction or contentment latency has gone up considerably because of this most recent masterpiece, we HOI3 fans may be looking at as much as 3 months of complete satisfaction/gaming-demands-met and an even longer time of quiet contentment. Its always the AI behavior problem which eventually eats away the game-satisfaction. I guess it really is a difficult problem to create authentic or near-authentic AI behavior...

When I bought HOI 3 Collection and start to play I felt that something was missing around the whole game. The finest hour was already realeased but I wondered if it worths the money.

This holiday Gamersgate gave me the chance to see that it could be better and better.

The custom start is asewome. Not only for battle order reasons. Playing with starting issues helps to learn a lot about the game itself (the tech tree is no longer a close mistery when you can play to increase the level or one tech you like)

But it isn't the only feature that I like. First of all is proficency. Game runs faster and smoother than ever in the same computer where it bumped before (I play it in laptop) and the strategic, tactical (love leader tactics and traits), and spy features are more smart than ever.

Pity of not being able to take command of your allies (canada sea force would be very usefull to beat german submarines and objetive assignement is sometimes chaos).

With this feature I will give it a 10.

Best regards and happy new year.

TFH is a very necessary improvement to the HoI 3 series, on top of the previous two expansions, FTM and SF. It fleshes out the game a little more, particularly the espionage system. Of course, the best reason to buy any HoI 3 expansion is its numerous tweaks and bug fixes -- the result of countless hours of work and testing by the developers and the players. It's a small step ahead of FTM, so I would grab it on special if you are or are planning to play HoI 3 at all properly soon. The biggest gripe the players have had with HoI 3 expansions in the past is that they resemble patches and do not truly alter the flow of the game in any fundamental way, nor do they expand the timeline (e.g. Hearts of Iron 2 Armageddon). It seems mostly fair given the fact that the Vanilla game was released half a decade ago to at least grab the new expansions on special, or get the Collector's edition to save your money (also on GG).

Hearts of Iron is the game you love to love and hate to hate. I love the immersion, the detail, the epic-ness. Finest Hour only increases these traits. But I hate to hate this game-- sometimes. What do I mean? Getting this game to run without glitches is like the battle system in the game: you can take the best army into battle and sometimes still lose because of bad luck. Owning a good computer doesn't guarantee you could play this expansion. In fact I advise anyone with an ATI/AMD graphics card NOT to buy this expansion, because the game will not work 100% with these cards. Expect hourly crashes with this one. Otherwise, its a great title.

TFH adds a lot to the Hearts of Iron 3 game and reworks some mechanics, including intelligence. The custom game mode alone is worth the expansion! If you already own For the Motherland, then Their Finest Hour is a must-have, as it really does complete the game.

Hearts of Iron III - Their Finest Hour is yet another expansion and like previous expansions it offers improvements on the interface, with a general polish of the UI, extra buttons like the quick click to upgrade units and to larger new features like the “Strategic Warfare Overview” this expansion offers the friendliest UI of all grand strategy paradox titles.

New units make an appearance in the expansion with unique nation specific units as well as technologies and bonuses. New units such as unique Ghurkhas or nationwide Landing Craft and mobile AA. New systems such as leaders gaining traits as you fight in terran adds personal touch, my general becoming a “desert fox” due to the battles in the desert. The technology tree adds an extra little icon displaying the level of research and the max level, allowing a quick glance to see your progress overall. Simple yet effective updates through the expansion push this to be one polished UI. The espionage system has been improved with new methods of gaining and spending points so you can gather more worthwhile intel. With unit changes, unit amendments and entirely new features such as “land lease” where you can give IC to allies, the game offers a few of those missing pieces to the grand puzzle.

One of the best features of the expansion is the custom game mode. Hearts of Iron III TFH offers that sought after freedom. Custom mode alone would justify the expansion pack as it gives you even more replayability than previous. Custom mode allows you to change your alignment, technology, units and buildings and more. It allows you to make a nation stronger, weaker and play scenarios far from history.

Another magnificent Addon for HOI3 as expected. The best thing in this one is the rewamp of the inteligence mechanics which really adds depth and becomes an usefull tool. The new mechanics for lend and lease give the allies an easier time and make it a bit harder for the Axis. As for the special units its sad that they do not impact the game that much due to their limited number.

This expansion is definitely worth to buy! I love the custom game mode. At first I did not know what to think about this new feature, but after all it is amazing. You can change the complete setup of your Country. You can change even where you place your IC e.g. in a different province and place new defensive Buildings. But you do only have a certain amount of points to spent so the game stays balanced. You can also create battle plans which is a lot of fun to me. These two points are the best new features among them all.

Feels more like a mod than a proper expansion. Also, don't expect any of your DLC like Stars and Stripes, Common Weapons of WW2, etc to work once Their Finest Hour is installed. The only worthwhile differences to the core game is the way amphibious beach landings have been changed and more leader traits have been added. It certainly isn't worth the £15 asking price. A massive disappointment and a very poor expansion compared to Semper Fi and For The Motherland

The new spy system is a welcome addition to the game, it is now interesting for small countries to get a spy network up and running as it requires far fewer resources and the gains are much greater.

Being able to draw on the map was a much needed feature as well.

Solid expansion that focuses on game play and mechanics without specializing in only one country. The most important improvement is the new leader and battles system that makes good leadership much more dynamic and useful and makes experience key.

The Custom Game Mode offers a good way to design your nation the way you like it.

The new Piercing/Armor-System changes the division composition to be more accurate.

The Battle plans are nice for multiplayer games.

Overall worth the money

Hearts of Iron 3 Their Finest Hour review

By ANSAHE posted 4th October 2012

Hearts of Iron 3 expansions are getting better and better. If the former "For the Motherland" was a hunch of little improvements that make the game much better in overall, now "Their Finest Hour" gives new features (or completely renewed ones).

The new intel feature urges you to change the way you play the game. Spies can be now essential; not just for some annoying (but little) global harm to your enemies, they could give you the insight to win battles and offensives even with a clear numerical disadventage.

Now you'll have to be more careful building your divisions and deploying them: armour is more important than before, in a better and more historical approach. The combined arms doctrine has change... for good.

And you have statistics to evaluate your global performance (how much manpower have you and you enemies lost, how much industrial production are you suffering and causing with strategical bombardments... etc.), as well as an impressive tool to make maps and draw your offensives and movements to share in Multiplayer games, or to use in After Action Reports... or just for immersion.

5/5. It's a must.

First all I love paradox's games and i have no problem with them at all.

But this time I need to make a complain about this game. I spent 20 buck to buy this game and it wont even work!!! I meet all the system requirements and people can go to the forum to check - "Their Finest Hour - Installer won't Install, as it cannot find "For the Motherland".

I mean why we just spent 20 buck and have to go throught all this s***??? Cant paradox just wait and make sure all the bugs fxed then put on the market??? IT IS REALLY ANNOYING!!!

Right now I still have to figure away to fix this game

btw not just "Their finest hour", "Dies Irae Götterdämmerung" have problem too

Excellent addition to the HOI3 Franchise

By gfiorell posted 3rd October 2012

Their Finest Hour takes HOI3 to a whole new level. The reworked intelligence system is interesting and adds depth to the game, and is my favorite thing about this update. The unique units add a little extra touch of character to the different factions, and make the game more fun. If you're a fan of the franchise, you need to get this.

A game that truly deserves the 5 stars!

By Xbwalker posted 2nd October 2012

I saw all these positive reviews on Gamersgate and just assumed they were fanboys who love any expansion regardless of content. I was wrong.

This expansion brings so much to the game including better control of corp AI, good espionage, unique units, and dare I say...much smoother gameplay. I only sport 2GB of RAM and always ran into deadstop gameplay around 1940 due to major resource usage. Now, the game runs great all the way to conclusion! Wooooo! As is always the case with Paradox strategy games, the polished product finally showed up after alot of .... polishing.

Hearts of Iron 3 Their Finest Hour review

By Zanze posted 1st October 2012

The new expansion for Hearts of Iron 3 greatly increases the re-playability of the game by allowing you to customize how your chosen country would start. For example, if I wanted to choose Italy who has multiple air technologies, I can erase all of those and replace them with a better Navy or Infantry. You can also choose what your diplomatic standings at the start of the game are as well as what units you start with. It is basically as if you started the game 10-15 years sooner than the chosen start.

The battle plans systems also allows you to coordinate better with your allies in multiplayer games and helps you remind them what the plan of action was at any given moment. Unique units also somewhat spice up the game play by giving certain countries an area of specialty. For example, Italy again has slightly better mountain/arctic troops while the US has a sort of special forces unit that is able to play the roll as a paratrooper and night fighter.

Map lines have been redrawn, more importantly in the sea. Allowing for more logical sea lanes. Many other minor changes were made to a few of the countries, usually to the number of generals or unit placement as well as holdings at the start. Many new events were added, some fluff to give insight on the happenings of the time, but others include strategical effects. For example, Nationalist China gets the option to steal some of Guangxi's territory through an event.

Overall it is a very nice expansion to the Hearts of Iron series and I would highly recommend it for those who enjoy playing multiplayer games with friends.

okay as a strategic war game you cant beat HOI III. In this version there are some what i would call minor tweaks possibly making things like intelligence a bit more understandable or if not understandable you can see the results of actually allocating education points to the creation of spy's as you can then assign them to do particular things, addition of specialist units is good as is the option for lend lease, maps updated and i think a bit more realism on the units you get at the start, ive played it for about 24 hours now and had a tinker with the custom games which could proove enjoyable for the very what ifs. Sadly i dont think there have been that many chnages with the naval and air units, on occassion you feel as though your building them for effect of having them but for little gain - possibly a bit of an improvement but time will tell. Sadly for me the one thing that i dont like in HOI3 is the fact your allies dont hand over some of their units to you as they did in HOI2 instead the option to select objectives is the way of it in HOI3 - i never found it to be particularly clever in the previosu versiosn and i dont see much improvement in this one - i mean one rouge untit springs up as a result of decent right in the middle of practiaclly the whole allied force of armoured and infantry, select the objective to re take the province and they would rather mill around than actually get stuck in - same in this version. However on the whole HOI3 is excellent i think more could have been done with this version if i am honest - e.g the summary tab has lots of information and statistics as it did in previous versions - all very nice but for what purpose - at least in HOI2 you could read about a paticular unit click on it and be taken to that unit on the map - not in HOI3 i am afraid - however as said its a good game if you like the HOI3 series - at 14.95 its not bad but for the changes it may be worth hanging on until the proce drops - as it will i gave it 3 stars as i was a bit unimpressed by the changes in this version - however on the whole i would give the HOI3 game a 5 star

Sorry, but I am not so enthusiastic about this expansion as previous reviewers. I agree that TFH offer many new nice features, but this is not very much for EU 20,-. The Dies Irae series (not compatible with the expansion, at least for the moment) did offer a lot more depth compared to TFH. It is a pitty that very little of this has been integrated in the last expansion.
