Iron Front: Liberation 1944 review

By Wadeyboy posted 10th January

I am giving this game 3 stars only for it's multiplayer game. Unfortunately, as is usual with games using the Arma 2 engine, the singleplayer is full of game breaking bugs. For example, early on in the singleplayer campaign, you are asked to unhitch an artillery cannon so it can be deployed. However, you just can't do it! You have to use the middle mouse button or the enter key to perform an action but no matter how many times you press both, there's no response whatsoever! And that's if you manage to get the action to perform up on screen in the first place! I tried climbing onto the cannon, crawling underneath it, shouldering my weapon and then trying, but I couldn't even get the action to perform up on screen. It took about half a dozen times of quitting and then reloading the game before I finally managed to get the default action up on screen. But then as I stated above, no matter how many times you press the middle mouse button and/or the enter key, absolutely nothing happens.

I have unfortunately come acrosws this kind of thing happening before when I bought Arma 2. Just one example of the bugs in that game came when I tried to order a helicopter to come and land and transport my team to another area of the very large map. Even though I was trying to get the helicopter to land in a large, empty car park, it continually crashed into the surrounding trees and buildings whilst trying to land! When on about the 20th attempt it did finally manage to land, my team all got fatally wounded whilst trying to board the helicopter!

Also in Iron Front (as in Arma 2), the expressionless faces of your team mates are still just as poor as they were in Operation Flashpoint from the same team many years ago. When they talk, they look like ventriloquist dummies with just the bottom lip moving up and down and no proper lipsync whatsoever. It's such a shame because without these problems, these could be among the very best examples of the first person shooter genre as they contain many great ideas and features. But the bugs are so serious that it's hard to believe just how these games came to be released in such a state. It's as though they were not play tested at all!

However, the multiplayer is great fun and not prone to the kind of game breaking bugs found in the singleplayer portion of the game. Well not that I've found so far anyway. The 5 patches that come with the game's release on Gamersgate is a sign that there have been big problems with the game. So hopefully, there will be one that sorts out the problems found in the singleplayer campaign. But as no such patch was forthcoming with Arma 2 or it's expansions, I wouldn't hold my breath.

So if you are only buying this game for the multplayer, then I can recommend it. I found it much more enjoyable than Heroes Of Stalingrad which had been my favourite multiplayer WW2 shooter up till now.

Great game at it's core. The Arma 2 engine is pretty great and all but has some bugs. This game had more bugs than Arma 2 itself had. Random crashes to desktop while flying planes,etc......But when it works I find the game enjoyable.

Weak in relation to the original arma 2 game. Sound is bad from guns. Some functions in the editor doesn't work. I am very dissapointed about this game,

Iron Front is a fun an detailed WWII military sim. Yes it has some issues and the save system can be annoying at times but if you are willing to overlook some of the small issues with the game it is quite enjoyable if u like detailed military simulators.

Not good, not good at all.

My first feeling after buying this game, was that of having just been mugged in the streets.

This game, quite simply should not be on sale. The only thing that it has going for it are the models.

There is no enjoyment to be had here, only frustration. Even if all of it's problems were solved by tomorrow you could only refer to it as a ArmA II mod.

If you are still curious, then my advice would to take another look in a year or two and when the going price was closer to £1.99

Worst purchase I have made to date.

As said previously, this game has potential. Right now, it is buggy and causes CTDs on many systems, especially those using NVidia chipsets. But this is put out by small-time developers who are fast at work on a second patch. I do believe they will get this thing right, and when they do, I would be willing to add two more stars. When they add more content (they did this with the first patch, btw), I would then nudge this up to five stars--not something I would do for anything else out there right now of this genre. My advice, wait a week and check Deepsilver's Iron Front forum for results of the latest patch. If it's good to go, then I'd say it s a good buy.

I can just "correct" nebelwerfer in his review as this is completely unplayable. No "buts" and/or exceptions. Nothing works being it multiplayer or singleplayer. Lack of any kind of decent dedicated server only makes things worse. I wouldnt even call it a game. I bought it on the account of being made on Arma2 engine without doing my "pre-purchase research". If there ever was a game that I would want to be refunded for than this is definitly it.

If you've played any of the ArmA series games in the past you know what to expect. Some bugs but one of the most epic war simulators around. The game uses the current version of the ArmA 2 engine (1.60) and inherits all the same strengths and weaknesses. The game does however feature tank combat that is much more advanced thanks to the brand new armour penetration, damage models and adjustable gunsight reticles which is a huge step up on ArmA 2's more arcadish system.

The models and textures for the various units and vehicles in the game are very well done and highly detailed and historical.

There is a campaign for both the Soviet and German sides that are fairly well down featuring lots of voice acting and present some interesting scenarios. However they are let down by some scripting issues that old ArmA players might remember from other past ArmA games (such as waypoints not triggering correctly, AI issues). I wouldn't recommend getting the game for the campaign alone because of this, some patches will be needed to fix it.

There is a full mission editor available that is identical to what ArmA 2 offered. The editor is relatively easy to use and very versatile. You can create anything from small infantry skirmishes up to large tank battles. The maps included with the game are very well detailed, with the largest map being 16km x 16km in size.

Multiplayer support is identical to ArmA 2, including both internet and LAN capabilities. The game shipped with a number of different MP missions and gamemodes, and more will probably be added overtime including missions made by the community.

Overall definately buy now if you want to make your own late-war Eastern Front missions in the mission editor like I did as you will be well catered for. I recommend waiting for a patch or two before buying if you will only play the campaign or online as remaining bugs are squashed.

terrible game, the upside is only in the multiplayer and in the hops that modders can achieve something respectable out of this.

the singleplayer is useless and bugged, AI is ridiculous and the game is FAR from being polished. It uses an engine very similiar, if not that of ARMA / OP Flashpoint games.

Expect the same type of 'hectic' OPFLASH combat..

This is day one, but theres a ways to go with patching before it becomes playable.

Iron Front: Liberation 1944 review - Version 1.01

By Benjamin385 posted 29th May 2012

I am playing version 1.01 of Iron Front 1944. I have not encountered any errors (Serious or otherwise) I am very happy with this purchase and will be supporting the developers allot more. This game has allot of content as well as a built in map editor with Mod tools 'coming soon'. I for one am very happy with my purchase. Although - I wish that they could have not put DRM on the Gamersgate version. Not really a problem just more hassle to get the game going.

So far the graphics are good, sound is tinny and mediocre, and AI is silly. I haven't been able to get past the second campaign scene when Russian tanks and infantry circle around my strong point and essentially mingle with the Germans. No shooting, etc.

Oh, tons of CTD at random times and events.

Game had so much potential, but the bugs and glitches throughout campaign and multilayer make this unplayable. There needs to be stricter watch dogs because customers are being arse raped too often because companies that are releasing unfinished games and then patching them. I have sent 7 unanswered emails to Deep Silver about the game with no response. I don't think they intend to patch or acknowledge any problems in the near future, the game is a complete disaster. Such a shame though, it had potential, but thanks to lazy sly devs, this is just another broken game that will be forgotten within the next week. I personally feel robbed of my 29.99.

Not fit for release yet.

By ckount posted 27th May 2012

At this moment I would recommend to wait until it comes out of beta properly. Expect a lot of CTD and reloading missions when trying to trigger events in single player. I've installed the release day patch (1.01/1.61) but no joy. Multiplayer has potential but with a fps of 5-15 it's not fun even though I wan't to like it.

NB: I run ARMA 2 CO SP/MP with 35-55 fps so it's not my hardware.

This military simulator let's you fight as infatry, tank crew or aircraft personal at the eastern Front in 1944. You can play as an ordinary soldier or command troops as an leading officer of the USSR or Germany.

Iron Front Liberation 1944 has was made by the team that startet the origaninal Lieberation WWII Arma II Mod. Like Arma II, Liberation 1944 has it's flaws in pathfinding.

Also like in Arma, you can enjoy the freedom of creating your own missions with a huge veriaty unit types and equipment.

The Player himself has to make the game beautiful und thrilling by his playing style. The game is too open to let you just lean back. That's the up und downside of Iron Front Liberation 1944.

If you are in to historically accurate military simulations, this game is a good choice.

The visuals in the game is good / graphics.

I also like the destructive model of the vehicles since now it really do matter where you hit a tank to kill it.

I also like the many weapons and especially the good looking entrenchments where you have your machine guns and AT guns..You can even move the AT guns and adjust the scope.

So far I only played the german campaign a few missions.

The missions look good and there are alot of details and atmosphere.

To the people who do not know this, this is a stand alone game that use the "arma 2" engine.

In general its an interesting and good looking game.

The negative.

Well the AI are terrible being a passenger in a truck sometimes can take 2 minutes to drive 100m, but lucky you can use time compression.

Els there are ALOT of problems with the waypoints. For example right now I need to get into a truck but the game do not register that im in the truck so im stuck in the german campaign where you have to drive to a river crossing.. ;-(

in general the game should have been tested more and not being published yet due to so many bugs of various kinds.

But yes its playable but often rather anoying.

But a nice game but the price is a bit to high.. Maybe 20 euro would be appropriate.

I did not know what to expect from this game but the screenshots looked great and the price was reasonable so I bought it. This is basically a shooter using the ARMA engine but set in WW2. The game looks stunning with great detail in the uniforms and settings. In the very first german mission, which has you as a recruit undergoing training, I had to stop and stare as several panzer IV's drove by. Again. the detail is amazing and it was so cool the way the tank crew was unbuttoned and looking around as they drove by.

To those who have played an arma game already you know what to expect. To those who have not, this game can be very unforgiving as far as difficulty goes. Some might be turned off by this but I find it quite refreshing. If you are tired of constantly playing as americans in a WW2 game then I highly recommend this to you. I hope the game gets more notice because I would love to try the multiplayer. Another nice touch is the ability to play the campaigns in english or in their native german or russian languages. The only real negatives I can mention is that the controls are very complex and the downloadable manual is a joke and just covers very basic controls. In the first mission you have to provide first aid to a fellow soldier and if I had not played ARMA I would not have known how to do it and the game does not explain how to do this.

Expect for those few things I absolutely love this game and I very happy with my purchase.
