Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light review

By raulverma posted 7th May

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is not your traditional Tomb Raider game but this addition to the series is a welcome to not only the series but the Isometric action game genre... with one exception (and a pretty big one). The Visual during game play are very detailed but not excessive to the point of distraction. enemies look diverse enough to know which type they are without having to look directly at them. The Story is on the weak side but is interesting enough to make you want to know the conclusion. Lara is hired by a group of "explorers" to find the legendary Mirror of Shadows. They removed the Mirror from it's resting place and awake Xolotl from his sealed prison. The Guardian of Light, Totec, is brought back to life and with the help of Lara, must defeat Xolotl and seal him back in the mirror...

The Game play is where its at! It's fast pace and non stop... BUT i have played this game with both first K&M and then game pad (xbox 360 controller) and this game absolutely terrible to play with K&M. There are some severe navigation issues when moving the stone balls from location to the other and having to place a bomb, roll and detonate the bomb is a real task. Now playing with the game pad is controlling Lara in action perfect (makes sense, since it is a XBLA game), but makes aiming seem a little tedious when compared to the mouse's point and click shooting. Single player and online co-op both smoothly with co-op reigning supreme when compared to each other.

Replay Value in this game is great. each mission as three levels of score total, three to five map challenges and 4-7 bonus items on each mission. giving you three way to play each mission in and different levels of difficulty, you can easily spend 15-18 hours on this game

The Music is good and keeps the atmosphere and action going but the voice acting is sub par.

Overall: This game would have gotten a 5/10 for having bad K&M and below average voice acting and story but the action in the game, online co-op, the ease of playing with a game pad and the incredible amount of replay value earns this an extremely solid 8.

Just make sure you have a game pad for this game.

This was a very exciting game for me. I adapted to it quickly, enjoying playing it with a good friend of mine that showed me the ropes, he was awesome! I even preferred the aiming better than what I was used to and really like the d-pad shortcut for weapons select. Is a great game, have played it over and over and also so on co-op. Really like the fact that this game is xbox controller compatible so controls are same for Steam as it is the xbox using that, makes it great for those of us that aren't great at using keyboards for games! Great, action, adventure, and even if you aren't into the whole Tomb Raider/ archeologist thing, you'll enjoy it. I definite A+ recommend.

I was never much of a fan of Lara Croft (only the live 1 :-)) games but this one really got my attention from the start. It's an action adventure in isometric perspective at it's best! You got tons of guns, perks to modify them, interesting lvls, many different monsters and very interesting and clever puzzles to solve. This game is so interesting you will go through it in 1 go! And than replay it just to see what you missed but with all the fancy guns you collected in the first run! :-) Fun doubles with a friend because game is somewhat different in coop. Definite recommendation!

Lara Croft still does puzzles

By error747 posted 12th March

This is a surprisingly good game. I had lost faith in Tomb Raider since the last couple of games just weren't as good as they used to be. This game manages to keep the puzzles intact and also gives the series a fresh twist with a new prospective and matching game play mechanics. Now if only the developers/writers would stop messing with Lara's character and pick one so we can learn to love her again. Pick this one up on sale!

This downloadable title seemed like a bit of a cash grab but once you start playing it you'll have a lot of fun. The isometric view actually works and there's a lot of satisfying action and puzzle solving.

A major break from the other Lara Croft titles, but a great co-op game. Full of puzzles and with a compelling history, this game will give hours and hours of fun. When you buy it, be sure one of your friends have it and if don´t, gift it.

This game is awesome in co-op.A lot of puzzle, really cool story.

If you have a friend, plug him in and you wont be disappointed.

I've played with Raziel and Kain, which makes the story take another turn.I was feeling i really play another Legacy of Kain game.

Tomb raider hardcore fans might not like it

By Ofor posted 3rd January

Although it is a great game. Challenging puzzles, good story. The Co-Op is nice, but I did not play it much.

The controls are nice, I played with keyboard and mouse but controller works great to.

Very nice game to buy in a sale.

This is a great action puzzle platformer both in single and co-op mode. The graphics are really great, the puzzles (which is different on co-op mode than the single player mode, a very nice touch) and the shooting mechanics are quite good as well.

I hope we can see a sequel of some kind in the future because this is a really great game, so don't miss out.

a new take on tomb raider

By thenthomwaslike posted 25th November 2012

very cool, isometric view. its challenging, it's fair, and it's a bit punishing. though tomb raider purists probably wouldn't be into it since there's not much exploration. the combat is great and it controls well with an xbox360 controller as well as a mouse and keyboard.

In this game Lara Croft, is something out of the original story that left the previous game Tomb Raider Underworld, but if it shows another form of gambling that Lara can include in the game, new weapons, new relics and special missions to unlock other things, this interesting game, the trouble is the multiplayer mode that has several errors and bad bed approach game, but even with these errors, it is fun to play in multiplayer mode, I recommend it.

This is actually quite a little gem! I wasn't expecting much from it as I've never been a fan of Tomb Raider at all, but I figured I'd pick it up since it was such a good price.

To my surprise, it doesn't resemble Tomb Raider at all. Instead, it's a really unique and satisfying co-op adventure. My girlfriend and I played it together and had a great time cooperatively solving puzzles and fighting boss battles.

Local co-op is so rare these days on the PC platform, and what little there is (besides Magicka) is usually pretty barebones. This game on the other hand is designed with co-op in mind, and it really shows in the design.

If you have a friend to play with, I wouldn't hesitate to strongly recommend grabbing this game.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light review

By Corpekata posted 3rd October 2012

For all the talk about the reboot of Tomb Raider, this gem flew under the radar and is probably the best game in the series. It has a pretty goofy plot setup but the characters are pretty fun. The levels change depending on if you're playing co-op or not so even if you don't have a partner you won't find the game awkwardly formed around some moronic AI bot like a lot of other co-op games are. Action is fun and fast, with decent strategy involved, and the same with the puzzles. The only downside is that the DLC for the game is not very good, and that the netcode is kind of bad at times, which might make it hard for you to connect to friends in the game.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light review

By Gaymera posted 14th September 2012

One of the better puzzle/shooter/exploration hybrids to come along in a while. Keeps the spirit of the Tomb Raider mythos intact while adding some new elements to it.

Controls are tight, and there are a ton of weapons and hidden bonus items to find. This is the kind of game that demands multiple replays, simply because there is enough content to keep even the best players busy.

I'm not a fan of the way Eidos are nickel-and-diming the fanbase by releasing measly DLC packs instead of including all that stuff in the vanilla release, but in total they add enough value to the game to make that kind of marketing just slightly less obnoxious then usual.

Highly recommended if you enjoy action-puzzle games.

An great isometric Tomb Raider game. The game features challenging puzzles, stunning visuals, a story that is tacky, but is so tacky it's good. However, the major flaw of this game that causes it to be a 4/5 is the god-awful netcode. To play online is like pulling teeth, you will get disconnected from your friend's lobby 9/10 times, and once you do get a game going, you will lag like crazy and get dropped within 5 minutes. However, the single player mode is still just as good, but you'll miss out on the fun you can have dropping baddies and solving puzzles with your chums.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light review

By deftonius posted 9th August 2012

This is a fun game and a departure from the typical "Tomb Raider" style of games. This game has a top down angled view of the action, and there is plenty of action to be had.

If you are into dungeon crawler top down view styles of games, this one is a good pick, especially if you can find it on sale. I think the only drawback to this game is it can be monotonous at times.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light review

By Seingreed posted 6th August 2012

A departure from the usual Tomb Raider formula, Guardian of Light introduces faced paced combat and obstacle navigation. A stream of challenges reward you with new weapons and upgrades, while secrets give a nod back to the exploration focused gameplay of the original series. While the game is fantastic in co-op the single player mode doesn't feel like a hollow experience in comparison, unlike many other multiplayer focused titles.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light review

By Andreakos posted 2nd August 2012

A very nice platforming game of Lara Croft and her new adventure, you can also play co-op with a friend, even the single player mode is fun, it will keep you busy for a few while you try to complete the game with maximum scores, trying to unlock all the bonus rewards, also you will have few nice skills that will help you through the game.

Well, this is surely one of the better games of the Tomb Raider and the mechanical change is totally related to that.3D platformer action with isometric viewpoint coming together with great co-op adventure and puzzles makes for a great experience. Had a great time with this and I'd recommend it to anyone wishing for a fun time with a friend.

This game is quite a departure from the tomb raider series, and it is quite enjoyable! Simple mechanics, interesting puzzles, straightforward combat and lots of exploration! One thing to note though: I primarily use my laptop to play games. I got this game to run, but had to turn off a lot of the fanciness like shadows and visual quality. I still find the game very addictive regardless!

I bought the game because it looked like a fun game to play cooperatively, and it was on sale. I got 2 copies and gave one to my brother, and we immediately found ourselves immensely enjoying this game. It's fun, the action is exciting, and the puzzles aren't too bad.

I enjoyed this game so much I came right back here to buy the DLC as well, it's well worth the money. Despite being in a different style than the other Tomb Raider games, this game is still an amazing game in it's own right.

A fun multiplayer experience, and one of the more fun local multiplayer experiences I have had in a while. The game controls much like a twin-stick shooter and is very in-depth in multiplayer puzzle solving. If you are looking for a game which is fun to play for an hour here or there with a friend/companion, then you should definitely pick this one up.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light review

By lok0812 posted 22nd May 2012

Top view Tomb Raider game filled with actions. This game stands out as a cooperative game rather than just another single player Tomb Raider game. The game is filled with puzzles that will earn you weapons, artifacts, and character upgrades for your character. But this game can be plagued with bad control on keyboard but it shouldn't be much of a problem once it is used to it. The entire game can last at least 8 hours, definitely a great game enhanced by cooperative play.

Isometric Tomb Raider

By Fred_DM posted 11th April 2012

A spin-off of the Tomb Raider series, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is an isometric action-adventure with a heavy focus on co-op gameplay, but it can also be played as a singleplayer game. The game combines platforming, puzzling and gunplay in a very enjoyable manner and it's an all around polished experience that's actually better than most Tomb Raider installments.

A beautiful downloadable game activable on Steam. The gameplay is interesting and challenging sometimes. I really like the puzzles on all the worlds. Excellent price, excellent cooperative challengues and great graphics.

By xHellSpawnx posted 20th February 2012

This game controls extremely well. It's just fun to move around, shoot stuff, push or blow balls, cause the physics feels really well. The dual-stick control, moving with the left stick and shooting with the right one takes a bit of getting used to (for me at least), but it works very very well and makes so much fun to fight enemies.

The only gripes I have, is that sometimes the game pulls the camera too far out so it gets a bit small (especially in multiplayer) and that the end game was super easy on single player even on the hard setting. But anyway, this game is a blast. Don't remember when I had so much fun playing.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light review

By raf66r posted 11th February 2012

This game is great fun and the co-op is where the game shines! I was Lara and usually ended up deciding whether my friend lived or died while walking over my grappling hook or jumping a big distance and scaling a wall while. The challenges aren't too tough and add a bit of fun content to each level. We found ourselves replaying a few levels just to get some of the challenges. In the end, the game has some bugs and strange engine behaviors but they actually added hilarious "WTF" moments we both had a laugh at. If you have a friend to play through this with it's totally worth it.

Same Lara, different genre but great game

By Ralp posted 11th February 2012

Dont be scared of trying this tomb raider based game simply because its not tomb raider like. Although the camera and controls changed a lot, it still has the award-winning action/adventure/puzzle style, allied with a local coop option. All maps have adjusted versions either for solo play or cooperative, making the partnership even more valuable. Unfortunately the online lobby is usually empty, which means you need a friend with his own copy to play online, or local if you have a gamepad (and it can be any gamepad, not only the xbox 360 one).

If you still unsure about buying it or not, know that the game includes 2 free DLCs, one is a challenge pack and the other are Kane and Lynch skins.

A truly great co-op game

By Tajdusark posted 22nd December 2011

For a game that I initially thought wouldn't be that good, this game surely blew me out of the water. I didn't think I would be in for such a great ride when I first bought it. The co-op design is perfect and some puzzles really needs you to think, which only heightens the sense of accomplishment when you manage to get further. But no, you won't face the types of advanced puzzles you would find in an adventure game, instead it's platforming puzzles that you more often than not need to solve under pressure.

It might not be a new Tomb Raider game, but it is a great spin-off that deserves its place in any co-op or arcade collection.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light review

By vvhitevvolf posted 17th December 2011

This game is basically a top down shooter with some puzzle elements. It has nice graphics and smooth controls. It isn't really a "tomb raider" game because you won't be challenged to figure out any complex puzzles or be required to make intricate jumps like previous games in the series. But what it does it does well. It offers fast paced action, a decent variety of weapons and also has some hidden secrets. You are also rated on your performance in each level which adds to some replay value if your the type of gamer who likes to find every secret, get your best time or complete every challenge. It also allows for co-op gameplay which is nice for those who want to experience the game with a friend. I enjoyed the game even though it lacked any real depth. Overall I give the game a 7.5 out of 10.

Focusing less on her tight tops and short shorts, Guardian of Light lets Lara do what she does best: kick ass, collect treasure, and decipher brain-bending puzzles. The addition of co-op and several other game-changing tweaks only serve to complement this can’t-miss formula.

Fantastic game, the graphics, being very simple, can always make you wonder, it's artistically perfect and incredible. Gameplay is very great, a mix of both action and brain. While you have to shoot as usual, there is always a challenge behind the corner waiting for you to complete it in a very short time. As a matter of fact I've never been able to play Underworld, but this looks like one of the greatest games of the last years. Especially if you play it in coop.

To make it short: Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is a great game.

I could never get into the Tomb Raider games, but I love this one. It offers nice graphics and animations and an interesting story. The puzzles are also quite nicely done and fit perfectly into the great designed levels.

The singleplayer kept me busy for about 6 hours, could be more if I bothered to get everything to 100 % completion. I have yet to try the coop, but I guess it would add a decent amount of hours.

Such a great game in such a small package. This spin off the main Tomb Raider series is well worth the money. The graphics are clean and crisp the sound is good. The puzzle aspect of this game is very well done as the puzzles arn't as obvious as most games of this genre. My only complaint about the PC version is playing it on a keyboard, due to the digital nature of the keyboard it was sometimes hard to work out which way to jump. However unlike other 3d platformers the camera didnt constantly change angle which usually makes it sometimes impossible to land on the platform. I strongly recommend this game as a great twist to an old franchise.

It's not as bad as I thought. This one took a different approach and tried a new sort of game-play , a nice break from the older games, bringing in something new to series.

The selling point of the game is co-operative mode. If you have someone you can play with, this game would be worth your while.

Lara Croft from a new point of view

By rcantora posted 14th August 2011

Do not expect the usual Tomb Rider game. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light has a top down perspective that gives it a new arcade look that might disappoint the most purist fans of the saga, but it is able to maintain the original atmosphere and challenging puzzles. Its most distinctive characteristic is that it includes a co-op mode (real co-op, not parallel, mode). There are also some DLC's available, in case you want to extend the fun. The downside: its storyline is kind of weak.

This is a new, very fun, and fair priced game. I recommend you give it a try.

One of the best Action / Puzzle games to come out in a very long time. Is a good reboot / going back to the roots for Lara, even if ditching the Tomb Raider name.

A must buy for puzzle fans, the only real downside to this game is the mandatory, extra DRM that you are forced to install and run to be able to play, but even then it's worth it. Thanks GamersGate and Square Enix for this awesome game!

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light review

By Navagon posted 27th March 2011

To be perfectly honest I would not have expected to find a Lara Croft game exceeding my expectations. Same goes for a top down shooter.

Yet somehow the two combined really just work. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is a highly polished game in its own right and doesn't suffer from the usual problems of being a console port.

It does play better on a controller, but that's not because Nixxes (the people who ported it) have done a horrible job on the mouse and keyboard controls, it's just the way these things are.

Calling it a top down shooter is a bit unfair. It's not like Lara just booked herself an appearance on Smash TV. The game throws many challenges and puzzles your way. Lara is as versatile as ever and using your grappling hook and hanging off of perilously high ledges at many points in the game.

This might not have been what you'd expect from a Lara Croft game but that doesn't stop it from being a very good purchase all the same.
