GAME SUMMARY

Planet Alcatraz

Rating: 3.4 (581 votes cast)

Planet Alcatraz is a 3D role playing game with isometric projection. The player travels through the game world and battles with enemies in the real-time mode. In a general sense Planet Alcatraz can be portrayed as a non-linear adventure with lots of shooting. Several genres are mixed in this game but despite that fact it doesn't stand stuck between them and appears to be a classical RPG that is based on a specially developed system.
The action takes place on the prison planet called Alcatraz. Its inhabitants are inveterate criminals that were banished there for the term of life because of their heinous crimes. The main objective of the game is to control a diversionary group that consists of the only one person in the beginning and enlarges through the game. The player has to use all sorts of resources and means to accomplish the mission that he receives at the very beginning of the game.

Prehistory
During XXII-XXIII centuries after the method of space warp has been discovered mankind settled over the whole universe. Several planets that appeared to be suitable for human life were assimilated. One of them - 2-4?33713/2 was colonized with the purpose of mining operations.
Just after ten years passed a three-ton fire-ball fell on the central industrial building of the colony. Considering the meteorite peril survived personnel of Assimilate Planet Yourself (APY) was evacuated immediately. Investigations aimed to bring in a verdict of guilty for consequences of assimilation of that dangerous planet lasted for several terrestrial years. This time was enough for the APY company to loose any interest for its wrecked manufacture and forsaken equipment.
Afterwards planet 2-4?33713/2 was passed to the register of Third Administration of Penitentiary Isolated Settlements (TAPIS). In a terrestrial year according to the established procedure administration started the deportation of criminals doomed to the lifelong imprisonment to planet 2-4?33713/2.
In 2507 the secret service reported that the inhabitants of 2-4?33713/2 started to build strange large construction reminding of a space ship again (this was happening not for the very first time). Observers from Control and Protection Orbital Station (CAPOS) "Cerberus" couldn't detect a thing and reported about that to higher headquarters. Headquarters decided to undertake the cheapest way to verify that information – they send five wreckers under the guise of condemned criminals. They had to reveal the exact destination and the nature of that project. This task was also final the exam to four cadets that were graduating from academy. That group of four was headed by experienced sergeant. After the disclosure of object the group had to report its coordinates to the station so that it would be possible to destroy it, whereupon they could leave the planet.
However, due to some circumstances the group was parted and the immediate execution of the mission became impossible.

Planet Alcatraz review

This game was meant to be played in Russian. It practically uses nothing but slang. It has a lot of military and prison related symbolism. There is just no way to translate it into English to convey the same meaning. It should have been rewritten for the English version. I enjoyed the game due to hilarious dialogues and writing in large part. The guy who wrote the story is a cultural icon in certain circles. Game mechanics didn't stand out from other similar games. It was a good experience overall. As one of the reviewers mentioned, the game has a surreal feeling to it. I agree. It's set on a different planet (prison planet). It's a shame that the game didn't translate well.

It's supposed to be a game resembling the very successful early Fallout games. However, this game is very linear and lack any of the complexity of the Fallout games. In addition, the dialogue is weird thanks to the bad translation.

A very linear RPG with unexciting combat and a translation that is bad even for a Russian game. There are better ways to spend your time, though the poor translation almost lends it something of a 'so bad it's good' charm. Almost.

This slow paced isometric mess didn't quite do it for me. I'm sure there are people out there who will enjoy this game. Maybe I expected something else - more of a "Fallout Tactics" sort of game. Instead I mostly found this game frustrating, darn ugly and right out boring. Mind you, I did not play the whole game. Maybe it gets better? I mean, there is potential here; I just never really figured out where the developers hid it.

An interesting RPG. The game has a very surreal feeling to it, mostly in part to the translation. Much of the dialogue in the game is really odd, but I feel it adds to the game's atmosphere. Check it out if you're in the mood for something a little off.

Why did I think that this was a prison tycoon style sim game? Well it isn't, instead we are presented with a Tim & Erik style turned based RPG parody. I played this game while watching Yo Gabba Gabba which improved on the experience but aside from being occasionally funny there isn't much else going on. Still I'm happy I played it for a few days.

A kind of Fallout/Jagged Alliance turn based RPG with the most laughable VO and badly translated dialogue in history. There is a hell of a lot of potential in this game, just a shame that you'll find it hard to understand what the hell is going on, though there will be countless unintentionally hilarious moments too. Give it a go during a 1C collection sale and see if it clicks for you.

So bad it's good? The English dub of this game is so bad It's hard to tell if it's intentional or not, regardless it's hilarious in my opinion. Well worth playing if you enjoy that sort of thing. The gameplay is standard isometric RPG "you've seen one you've seen them all" style.

Planet Alcatraz (A Classic Fallout Styled Game)

By Bloodgrave posted 21st May 2012

I ended up really liking this game. It very much feels like classic fallout game play. The mechanics, art style, quests and even tone of this gsame all seem like a fallout throwback.

If you are a fan of that genre you will enjoy this game. There is even an element of taking multiple decision paths through quests. I also likes the item upgrade options available in the game as well which gives it a bit more of a robust rpg experience.

If you are looking for something like classic fallout definitely check it out.

Planet Alcatraz is not really a non-linear adventure but a tactical RPG with many a flaws, voice acting/locatization being the biggest of them all. Graphics aren't anything special, character customization is iffy, game world is not really alive but all in all it's a game lacking tons of polish some of are used to that comes with monster budgets.

You could al least give this game a try; you might be surprised.

Very Linear, poorly translated. The story is interesting but not enough to carry this game (especially with the poor translation). There is very little in the way of tactics, it really just ends up being who has the bigger stick and better stats.

I wish I could have liked this, the setting is really kind of cool, but I really got bored with it about two hours into it.

This is a pretty poor game, when all's told. It's quite... hard, plus it doesn't seem to be the most polished game release at all. It's pretty linear too, though there is a character development system present in the game for people who like RPGs.

If it had to be compared to anything, it is similar to the Fallout games in a way, but it just doesn't feel as good as those titles at all.

This is a fun game to play, but it really does have linear style gameplay. You have to do something one-way. There are a few choices to make that alter the game a little bit. This being from the party members you get or the path you choose in a dialogue action. This is a challenging game if you do not know what you are doing. If i ahd to give any advice if you play this game, search the map closely and pick up any kind of healing items.

Oh God the voice acting. what the hell is going on? im so confused. ok so Planet Alcatraz is a fallout like tactical rpg thing. you wander a planet in a fairly linear fashion blasting bad voice actors with some poorly translated dialog. gameplay does vary a little in that you can be all stealthy and stuff but it seems to be easiest to dump your points into melee and punch the poop out of peoples mouths. the beginning of the game guns are useless. its pretty meh, game, i grant you stars. but only three cause you're not all that great

This game is very old-school. It reminds me a lot of the Fallout series but without the great leveling perks and quirky writing. Basically you follow a linear progression from area to area building your character's stats and abilities while obtaining the best equipment and items for your character. Nothing wrong with the game, it's just been done better many times.

So I bought this game with a couple of blue coins I had saved when it was on special. It was very cheap. I am glad that I did. I have enjoyed this game immensely and although not without its glaring bugs, specially in the voiceover and speech, There is something incredibly charming about this game. It's a happy marriage of Fallout 2 and Jagged Alliance 2

If you are looking for a fun and enjoyable RPG then I would recommend Planet Alcatraz. While the storyline my not be the best (stranded on a alien planet) and there are some translation issues the graphics and sound do a fine job. Also be careful that later in the game it seems the difficulty gets rather hard. Overall though a fun and enjoyable RPG for a good price.

this game is strange rpg, almost of action is not battle. all you have to do is steel moneys and items for level-up. sometimes, you attack enemies. you earn exp-point by steeling moneys and items. and, there is many sub missions. you can solve issues by many ways.

you can customize a character's face by editing eyes, nose, mouth, tin.

well... you will notice soon. YOUR FACE IS ONLY GORILLA! ONLY GORILLA! ONLY GORILLA! lol

This is a great rpg with a nice assortment of weapons and other equipment. There are lots of quests. To be expected from a Russian game, however, the voice acting is atrocious and the translation is terrible. The one thing that really made me a little angry is that I could not complete the game due to a crash every time at the exact same point in the game. Luckily, I was far enough in the game to be satisfied.

this game is a very interesting game, but sometimes it feels a bit tough when you do not have room for everything from the dead bodies and it then can not go back to retrieve.

But I thought the game had fresh ideas and even some old, some heavy playing, but definitely worth buying.

Well,

I've been playing Planet Alcatraz for now an hour.. and really, I regret having bought it for now. The beginning is really awful. "non-linear adventure" they said. Yeah, well, perhaps I'm not smart enough but for now it seems to me that it's VERY linear. And.. always those f***ing movies that interrupt your gameplay ! Really, no, that's not what I expected.

Very disapointing

Being a big fan of games like Diablo, I decided to give this a go. My first reaction was at the horrid voice acting. Seriously, better acting in the adult film industry. But I was able to get past that and what I found was a game that had so much potential, but just didn't feal to come together. Uninstalled it from my computer, but may give it another go down the road... who knows.

This game was a bit surprise, I bought it for a couple of euros from summersale and.. it's actually quite good! Kinda good "old-time" rpg where you don't have to hide & shoot behind obstacles.

I don't know if it is indie-game or not, but it sure feels like one. Fresh atmosphere is good thing these days, and even horrible voice acting and harsh graphics can't stop me. Yet I haven't met any bigger bugs, and I hope those don't ruin my game...

What can I say about this?

This is one of those games you want to hate, the story is very very boring and I've found myself falling asleep because of it. It's too easy to be critical of the game, its buggy, it's slow, you cant leave the area until every enemy is dead therefore you cant retreat from a losing battle. Worst of all is the voice acting, its monotone emotionless drivel, at times the script isnt even followed by the characters.

But with a bit more polish and better writing this could even been a rival to the new jagged edge remakes which arent perfect themselves but are 10x better. Hopefully someone could someday make this the game it could have been.

This is a tactical RPG which shows a lot of promise, but is dragged down by a number of minor niggling issues.

It plays in real time, although with a pause which allows you to issue orders to your men, of which you can eventually recruit four. The skill system seems to be a weird fusion of Fallout style tag skills and perks combined with a Jagged Alliance style minimal skillset. Not that this is a bad thing, it works remarkably well.

In fact the system is what stands out here. There's a multitude of different weapon types for combat with some interesting side abilities and the like (home made guns for example cannot be reloaded during combat due to the overly long reload procedure). This keeps the game fresh and interesting.

There are some cringeworthy flaws though. The graphics are functional rather than pretty, the game isn't eye-meltingly hideous to look at but it's not going to win a beauty queen award either. Character customisation is limited, you're basically stuck looking like an extra from Jarhead.

By far the worst aspect is the voice acting. It wanders between disinterested boredom and out of place melodrama seemingly at random, doesn't quite match the subtitles at the bottom of the screen and doesn't quite fit the character either.

The world is sadly less than perfect. Many NPC's cannot be engaged in conversation whatsoever, only certain doors and containers may be opened (and with no visual differentiation between the ones you can open and the ones you can't you're stuck with floating the mouse over them and seeing if the icon changes).

It's something of a cheap and cheerful veneer over what is a decent core system. There is a playable and entertaining game under there but the lack of polish may be too distracting for some. It's not likely to be hailed as the next RPG masterpiece, but nor is it a bad game for that matter.

and what to say about this game? at the beginning of the game I followed the graphics and sound, and an introductory video and it was not bad! and as I passed an increasing part of the game bugs in the game have been accumulating! but I still played and I'm not sorry! To the extent that cost is not bad and I will try to find a game similar to this!

I must say this game could have been a gem.

It is a good game, good "tactical" rpg, good rpg mechanism, squad managing.

The storyline is interesting, there are a lot of side quests and "dungeons" (explore/fight area), the game is decently hard at start. But the dialogs are ridiculous sometimes, so are some of the graphics ;) (mostly the cutscene, though generally i dont care about game graphism but its gameplay content, those are terrible).

Adding more freedom with exploration, maybe more characters to recruit (and not only the 4 imperial commandos), more interaction with npcs could have made this game a true gem.
