Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific review

This is really a great simulation!!

You really get the experience that you are all alone on a vast ocean, with no one to bail you out. The sounds when you dive creates a very claustrophobic feeling, only enhanced by the sound of the deptcharges nearby.

This isn't just another onemanarmykillstheentirejapanesenavy-game, you really have to work hard for your blod, lay in wait and calculate your hits.

Great game!!

n Silent Hunter 4, you can experience the war in the Pacific a number of ways. There are stand-alone missions that put you in the middle of battles if you just want to dive into the action. Then there are war patrols that let you cruise around looking for trouble. The lengthiest of all the gameplay modes is the career mode, which lets you begin in any year of the war and go out on numerous war patrols. A career can easily occupy days, if not weeks, of evening play time.

This game is phenomenal. I had never played any of the SH series before, so this was my first entry to the series. After getting immediately hooked, I bought the others too.

This game is a simulation of being a WW2 Sub captain. The realism settings can be changed and dialed to taste, so the game is really only as difficult as you make it out to me. You have all of the responsibilities of being a boat captain. You'll need to manage your crew (who can be wounded, killed, promoted etc etc). You'll need to accomplish missions...but are basically given the world as your sandbox. You can travel anywhere you want. I'll always remember my strike on Tokyo in early '42 (you don't see THAT one in the history books, eh?).

The sound is great. Based on your performance, you can eventually be promoted and given command of new models of submarines.

It should also be mentioned that this game has an absolutely fantastic modding community. There are some amazing mods out there that greatly add to the mileage you'll get from this game.

Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific review

The original Silent Hunter (the 1st part of the series, for good old DOS), was about American submarines (fleet boats) fighting the Japanese. This scenario is the basis for SH4 (after SH3, which was situated in the Atlantic theatre).

For me as a German, it is somehow difficult to imagine this scenario. Many subsim fans know about the German campaings in the Atlantic, or they think to know, based on "Das Boot" knowledge, but knowledge about the American campaigns is not as good. SH4 shows a different part of the world, the ocean is vast, the boats are larger, heavier, and all in all the tactics we know from the Atlantic may not work in the Pacific. This is a good change from the worn-out path.

Graphics of the game are rather good, even today (but of course not as good as in SH5). Crew management has been improved compared to SH3 (and still is better than SH5). If you don't like the Pacific theatre, you could still get this game with its expansion "U-boat missions", which enables you to use the "Operation Monsun" mod, which adds a complete German Atlantic campaign to the game.

Very good game... just a few minor issues. When you are using time compression, whenever you approach another vessel (plane, ship, etc.), the time compression ALWAYS slows down to 8. It doesn't matter if it is long range or shooting distance away from you. Another issue is that I found that my careers deleted themselves after a month or so of nonuse. The range of career patrols is limited, too. Other than that, excellent game.

I think fourth one is the best in silent hunter series and there aren't a lot of submarine simulations on the market. it's been on sale for quite a time now so don't expect very good graphics, but it's fairly realistic. if you played some of the older games you probably bought this already. in case you haven't (or started with the sh5) and if you like simulation games i think it's very well worth a shot.

A very nice submarine sim. One of the best Ive played so far. It is very simple for starters and for those who look for more of a challenge, settings can be tweeked that can make you feel like your actually dealing with real World War submarine problems. I would even rate this game above the newest edition of Silent Hunter 5 due to its in depth concentration.

Silent Hunter 4 was at his time a controversial title from the franchise. While it added a lot of new features to this sub simulation, the UI changed so much from SH3 that hardcore players felt lost at the beginning.

To my opinion SH4 is probably the best title from the Silent Hunter franchise (SH5 being an alpha game at its release, not playable without mods from community). The dynamic campaign from stock game is 100% dynamic, a must for the title. You start your career choosing the year of service, type of sub, and prestige points. I recomment you to start in 1941 on the asiatic fleet front using an old S-18 ;) for some challenge. The campaing will evolve and feature historic battle as you progress into the game. It is not a mission campaign at all. You do patrols after patrols, dock to base when you want, and can achieve a lot of bonus objectives during patrols. So basically all historic battles or events can occur while you are at sea, when others event would occur while you are at rest after a patrol (but if you were staying at sea you could have seen them too).

The modding community is also awsome. Visit the subsims forum for that. I strongly recommend the TMO mod that adds a lot to the game (more realism, 2 more subs, and so on...)

A great subsim game, better than SH3 and SH5 imho.
