Syndicate

Rating: 3.9 (103 votes cast)

In the not too distant future, the world is divided into regions controlled by mega-corporations known as Syndicates. In this future, business is war, and you are the weapon: the latest prototype agent for Eurocorp, one of the most ruthless Syndicates in a world dominated by greed. In single-player, embark on a unique sci-fi shooter adventure of corruption and revenge, as you utilize DART 6 chip-enhanced technology to breech, manipulate and control the wired world. Or form your own Syndicate in four-player co-op and dominate nine action-packed missions inspired by the original Syndicate game.

Syndicate is the re-imagination of a cult classic franchise from 1993 - a unique action shooter set in a not too distant future, where Business is War.

2069 – No longer governed by politicians, the developed world is divided up into regions controlled by megacorporations known as Syndicates. These Syndicates have revolutionized how the consumer interacts with the digital world. No longer does the consumer require a device to access the world’s data and control their technology, they can do this at the blink of an eye via neural chip implant. Civilians flocked to be “chip’d” and enjoy all that their selected Syndicate has to offer; housing, medical, banking, insurance, education, entertainment and jobs. One complete package. One complete lifestyle. In return, the Syndicates gained unprecedented insights, and control, over the individual and their behaviour. With little governmental oversight, business has become war. The Syndicates will stop at nothing for ultimate market dominance. At the front line of this war are the Agents, the Syndicate’s bio-engineered and chip-augmented enforcers. They can breach anything in the wired world including their enemies, their weapons and the environment that surrounds them, making them the most efficient and deadly technological weapons in the world. Take on the role of Miles Kilo, Eurocorp’s latest prototype agent, and embark on a brutal action adventure of corruption
and revenge.

An underrated gem

By KanjiKado posted 4th February

Syndicate has always been overshadowed by Deus Ex: HR in terms of a cyberpunk shooter game, and although it has its shortcomings, it is worth picking up.

The single-player campaign is lengthy enough and varied in location. The number of weapons is a bit low, but the multitudes of ways you can use them make up for it. It's your fairly generic FPS, regenerative HP, slow time, and lots of mediocre AI running around. Although there's a few complaints about how much bloom the developers used, I felt the environments were good enough to bring the world to life to a fair extent.

Right now you're probably wondering how I could give such a generic game a 5-star rating; I'll explain right now: the co-op. That's why.

It's about on the level of Left for Dead - lots of team-centric mechanics, even distancing it from the aforementioned classic through a class system. There are a lot of campaigns to play through with your friends (read: this long after the release, the servers are all but empty; you need your friends to get this if you want to play co-op). There's really no words I can think of that can capture this fantastic multiplayer experience - pick up a 4 pack and you and your friends gotta see this yourself.

If you don't have friends, well, you're missing out on the best half of this game, but it's still an acceptable game without it.

I paid 5 bucks for this game .. and was absolutely amazed by the looks of it .. the graphics are great, the story is pretty good so far the voice acting its not outstanding but its not bad at all .. its normal .. the fact that you see familiar Hollywood faces adds to the game as well .. and the mechanics are innovative .. although I haven't finished the game i'm looking forward to and so far no complains or regrets about buying it.. def recommend to FPS lovers and gamers!!

While the gamplay is not at all like the classic game, this is a pretty good modern shooter, with some interesting gameplay mechanics, great graphics and good voice acting from the likes of Brian Cox and Rosario Dawson. It's a bit short, though.

While this game had a lot of attention due to the fact it wasn't very faithful to the originals, I went into this with not being that familiar with them so I guess that lack of baggage might skew my review. Anyways, Syndicate is an interesting FPS with pretty unique mechanics. It suffers a bit from some strange pacing issues, often cutting you off from the action right when it feels like it should be reaching a fever pitch. Story is decent, though much of the cyberpunk trappings will be familiar to most. Multiplayer is a lot of fun but quite hard and the community is rather small so can be hard to get into.

Well, the comeback was probably worth it. When an older game gets remade you have to wonder if there was even a point to it happening. Syndicate does provide a good game, and it looks fantastic. However, the wheel for FPS shooters isn't being reinvented, and the game definitely won't make you forget about playing a much better game, such as Halo. However, for a solid play and great graphics, it does give you that.

Not worth the time or effort to bother with. The primary gimmick associated with combat in this game is more disruptive than fun, and the amount of lens flare is so wildly over-powering that extended sections are blinding.

Shooters with better level design and mechanics are readily available. This one is such that even a aficionado of sci-fi setting FPS games is better off leaving this one alone.

This game is fun to a certain point. The single player mostly just consist of "clear room and proceed" syndrome and the story is just plain...

As for the Co-op, I can't really say anything about it since I got this game a little too late to play with anyone.

While Syndicate has many Elements of the original, sadly they are just names in a game that is juts a shell. As FPS, the game can provide you a lot of romp shooting, killing waves afters waves of enemies. Visually speaking the game looks amazing, oddly enough it has a BF3 blue tint filter, but don't let it stop you it's pretty and while I hate tints, this one is just does not reduce from the quality it has to offer. Sadly thought, it does not offer visual settings for adjusting, only resolution, post processing and V-sinc.

Gameplay wise, the game has an Experience system that when killing enemies or timing your hacks correctly provides you with little boost of it. In exchange for it you can upgrade your Dart chip, that's right a chip that is neurally implanted to you, that provides you tactical assessment and provides you with on-the-fly tactical hacking abilities against your enemies and your environment. While sounding too good o be true it is, the whole system sometimes feels like a gimmick more than anything, with a lot of the upgrades barely doing anything new and almost forcing you to use the bullet-time adrenal upgrades for priority.

Syndicate is an average shooter. At times the game feels like Deus Ex with fewer features and less effort put into it. If you are a fan of the classic '93 game Syndicate this game will be a huge disappointment, if you are just looking for a stylish game with some good shoot 'em up action, this is the game for you.

Avoid this game at all costs. The co-op is fairly busted. You either host a server or do quick match and only connect to the same 2 or 3 people every time. There will be little variety in who you get to play with. The game also has no in game text chat and no one for the most part uses the voice (as it is off by default, along with the ability to hear it.) I paid 6 dollars for this and was disappointed heavily by the busted co-op match making.

This game is really fun, and it plays better on the pc than the consoles. It requires EA Origin though. Can play coop also which is very fun.

It's a pretty awesome game. The Co-op is amazing the leveling and progression will keep your attention. Great graphics. Would be 5 of 5 if single player matched co-op experience.

Great (if not particularly original) FPS. I would have given 4 stars if only the single player campaign was not so short (approx. 8 hrs for me.). Multiplayer seems well integrated, but I don't play well with others ;) So this review is for the short single player experience: Good but short-lived.

The single player should never have been included if it wasn't going to be done right for PC. Lazy port style "rat in a maze", "jump through hoops", "levels of minions and puzzles/challenges then kill boss" gameplay. If you want a mindless game buy a console. PC gamers expect A LOT more than pretty graphics, cut scenes, and flash. ZERO substance and as an avid fan of the original game I want to use the suicide breach on myself.

Very good, with some oddities

By markelphoenix posted 24th February 2012

This is review is in reference to the Multiplayer aspect. I'll largely do this in a biref Pro/Con format and expand on anything I feel is worth it.

Pro:

-Progression system (Ranking Up, Weapons Research, Application Research)

-Customizability (Choose what applications and weapons you want to use and how you want to use your rank up points amongst your chip slots[passive abilities])

-Fun Objective Based Co-Op

-Enjoyable Atmospheric touches (pre-mission surveilance info routing out the Co-Op objectives, voiced mission leader and AI assistant, etc.)

Con:

-No In Game VoIP or Ability to chat. Now I list this as a con because in multiplayer, well, you just need to communicate. That being said.....I found it oddly....inspiring to see how people organically did what was needed. They followed on screen ques that led them to reviving their team-mates and going to the next objective. So, in one aspects may be a pro depending upon your personality type. Some may like not hearing 12 yr old timmy over the mic or seeing someone rage quiting in chat.

Over All: Find it very enjoyable. Controls are responsive, customizability is great, and if you're a fan of dystopian cyberpunk, you'll feel right at home.

A solid shooter, especially if you like co-op.

By LXMc posted 23rd February 2012

Syndicate is a well made FPS with a cool tactical edge (breaching), however in my opinion the co-op is what makes the game worthwhile. Co-op, is lots of fun, even with strangers. The breach mechanics allow players to take on roles in addition to just shooting, if you want to hang back and heal your squad and use beneficial buffs on your team? Go for it. In the harder levels/difficulties teamwork is a necessity as bosses will easily overwhelm 1 or 2 lone wolf players. If you tend to shy away from multiplayer games then I don't expect the singleplayer will be enough to make this game worthwhile. The story is mildly interesting and the breach mechanics add some tactics and interest to the combat, but it is not the most compelling game out there.
