Total War SHOGUN 2 Rise of the Samurai Campaign

Rating: 4.4 (655 votes cast)

Rise of The Samurai is a brand new, independent campaign for Total War: SHOGUN 2.

Set 400 years before the dramatic civil war depicted in SHOGUN 2, the "Rise of The Samurai" campaign is based on the Gempei War, a conflict between six legendary clans of the Taira, Minamoto and Fujiwara families. It culminated in the first Shogunate, and the rise of the Samurai as the ruling class.

Key Features

  • Play a brand new and independent campaign for SHOGUN 2 set in 12th century Japan.
    • The Rise of The Samurai campaign can be played in single-player mode as well as multiplayer versus or co-op modes.
  • 3 new families divided into 6 playable clans
    • Each clan has its own unique set of traits, giving it a distinctive feel and play-style.
  • 16 new land units spread across swordsmen, spearmen, archers, and cavalry. These include:
    • Foot Samurai – Masters of bow and sword, these Samurai are deadly at range or in melee. They may not be the most numerous units, but they are perhaps the most effective. Also protected by distinctive Gempei-period armour which gives excellent protection at range and in melee.
    • Sword Attendants – Armed with huge two-handed swords, these fearsome warriors can carve a bloody path in melee.
  • 4 new Hero units – the Naginata Warrior Monk Hero, the Tetsubo Warrior Monk Hero, the Mounted Samurai Hero and the Onna Bushi Heroine.
    • Onna Bushi Heroine – Armed with Naginata and bow, these female Samurai are versatile cavalry units who excel in melee. Do not doubt the courage of a woman…
    • Tetsubo Warrior Monk Hero – armed with iron-studded clubs, these Monks are devastating in melee as they bash their way through their foes.
  • 10 new naval units and 3 new naval special abilities ("Banzai!," "Whistling Arrows" and "Rally")
  • 4 new agent types with their own unique skill trees:
    • The Shirabyoshi uses seduction to convince her target to join her family’s cause, and to distract enemy armies. She is also able to entertain the nobles of friendly towns in order to boost their growth and entertain friendly generals in the field, which increases their loyalty to the family and counteracts the efforts of enemy agents attempting to bribe or seduce them into changing sides.
    • The Junsatsushi can request the allegiance of neutral and enemy castle towns, along with any forces garrisoned there. He ensures loyalty and obedience from friendly generals, increases income by preventing corruption, and keeps your castle towns and armies safe from enemy subterfuge when stationed there. He can also pay off rival agents.
    • The Monomi acts as an assassin, spy, saboteur and scout. He can establish spy networks within your castle towns, which increases the chances of discovering any rival agents and armies that may be hiding within a province.
    • The Sou can inspire a friendly army or pacify an angry populace with his enlightened rhetoric. Likewise, he can demoralise an enemy force, reduce the chances of successful bribery, indoctrinate enemy agents and cause them to retire, or incite an enemy population to revolt.
  • New historical scenario – the Battle of Anegawa (1570)

Total War: SHOGUN 2 Rise of the Samurai Campaign review

An amazing addition to Shogun 2 for the price. It adds an entirely new campaign to the game that'll give you a much different experience from the original game. A must get!

This expansion adds a new dimension to the game. It plunges in the Genpei Kassen ( 1180 of our Era), a 5 years long civil war that sees the two largest clans of Japan fight to death after a attempted coup by the Emperor. This gives you the chance to explore the origins of the shogunate and is well worth the money.

This is a surprisingly substantial DLC, the best yet to be released for Shogun 2. I expected a new single player story driven campaign, perhaps with some new units, what I did not expect was a whole new Japan that almost felt like an expansion. I actually prefer the look of this map compared to the original Shogun 2 map. The mountains have been toned down to give the entire map a less "busy" feel. If you want to enjoy some new clans and units for a campaign that will feel very different from vanilla Shogun 2, try Rise of the Samurai.

Better than Shogun 2 original campaign, really cool if you have a previous experience in the original campaign. Also, it's awesome playing coop. Now I'll go back to dreaming that CA make a coop DLC for Empire...

How DLC should be: New campaign, new era, new units. First Shogun 2 DLC which is totally worth the money. You should not buy this if you have not completed the main campaign yet, as this will have no effect ( i think) on the main campaign. Plays quite differently than the main campaign, and it is a little more difficult too.

Being a long time fan of strategy games I had been expecting this release with anticipation and a bit of fear. The previous two Total War games had not quite been up to par with the quality of the previous titles...This one rights all the wrongs. The game is fun and challenging, the polish is visible and I have yet to encoutner any bugs after 80 hours of play. The diplomacy/politics play a pretty important role as well.

It is a must for any strategy fan!

i found this to be a much more interesting timeframe to play in, the dlc gives you an option to play an earlier campaign from the 10th century and the rise of the first shogunate.

earlier periode suits me better and the game is definitly up to the high standards of the shogun brand. if you enjoy medieval 2 time frame, this one is for you.

The game itself has been challenging, graphically intensive, and so immersive. Rise of the Samurai allows you to tackle the true origins of the Samurai with new content through new missions (prior to the original game, at that!), new units, new benefits, and new everything.

For the discounted price, it's worth it. AND it is Steamworks-enabled, too.

An excellent addition to a wonderful game, adding an entirely new campaign is way more then I expected from shogun 2 dlc and I am pleasantly surprised. great value at $6.99 considering that most other dlc give you a lot less.

Rise of the Samurai is a decent DLC which adds a campaign that actually feels different than the original game. Things take place much slower, diplomacy is a bit of a bigger role (not too much though), and low tier units are not reliable. You will be reminiscing about the glory of the Ashigaru in this campaign as the Levy troops are not even good as meat shields.

Realm divide still makes everyone hate you, but I actually had a vassal stick with me until the very end of the game despite realm divide. It was most impressive when compared to the vanilla campaign, and did not require any gifts or marriages to keep in tact.

This DLC is a good buy for a new single player experience. The units are not as ground breaking in multiplayer as the previous DLC though there are a few new retainers with it. All in all I am happy with this purchase.

Excellent addition to an already great game. If you have been waiting for some extra units to experiment with, this game is a very good choice. The extra patch delivered with the DLC does also add to the game. Activating on steam worked without a problem. Overall 5/5. Need to get playing :-)
