Amnesia: The Dark Descent review

By wardaddy58 posted 28th March

This is a fantastic game! It is extremely scary though, not for the people who get scared easily. If you get scared while playing Slender, then don't even try this one. That being said there are a lot of good thins to say, and some bad.

The good.

-Graphics are very good, very detailed.

-The immersion is great, you will feel like you're really there.

-The puzzles are clever, and some are hard to figure out.

-The chases are intense and will give you an adrenaline rush.

The bad.

-You have to have light at all times, the dark will make your character go insane. Insanity will make the game a lot harder. And you don't have enough light sources or oil in your lamp to last as long as you need it to.

-Monsters can not be killed (This is only bad for some people, I actually like the idea)

I think this is a great game, and if you like scary games then this will be the best game you could get.

Truly Thrilling

If there's one thing this game does, it's keep you on your toes. This game's brilliant soundtrack and atmospheric cinematography will make you treat Daniel's life as your own, fleeing at the first sign of danger and hiding for what must seem like ages to make sure your stalker has lost your scent. Amnesia: The Dark Descent is not a game to be spoilt by walkthroughs or tutorials - it's all about putting yourself in the character's shoes and making life or death decisions. Oh, and running fast as hell.

An excellent game if you want to feel the game, immerse into it and experience strong emotions. If you're planning to rush trough the game just with the goal to finish it, then this game is a waste of money to you. Read the diaries, look around you, feel the atmosphere and shiver when strange things start to happen. It was a sort of catharsis to me!

Before buying this game I watched various videos and reviews. Everyone said it was the scariest game they had ever played. It looked pretty creepy but I thought they were over exaggerating. But boy was I wrong. Amnesia the Dark Descent creates the horror atmosphere every horror game has been trying to achieve for years. Although the graphics aren't amazing, the sound is what makes the game so scary. While roaming through castle Brennenberg, you encounter many monsters that are pretty hard to avoid. While running is an option, hiding is the best way to survive. I advise this game to all horror fans looking for a scary game with a very good storyline.

Terrifying

By Daithi posted 29th October 2012

I'm just going to come out and say it: Amnesia is the most consistently terrifying game I've ever played. It's so bad that I have to take regular breaks when playing it, just to let the tension wind down to comfortable levels.

As an amnesiac with a fear of the dark running around a dark castle, you'll solve puzzles, avoid enemies, manage your health and sanity. The graphics are great for an indie title, the story is interesting, and the light/sanity mechanics are fun.

If you are expecting something like Resident Evil, you will probably be disappointed. There are no weapons, so when you see an enemy, you run. Some may consider the lack of weapons a minus, but the sense of vulnerability and tension their absence creates is amazing!

Descend into madness and try to reclaim your memories... all while avoiding the shadow of death following you.

Very good

By deadlyhair posted 13th September 2012

One of the scariest games I've played. You are given no weapons to defend yourself with (one of the major flaws of the otherwise good Penumbra series, by the same people, was the awkward combat), forcing you to run and hide. However, you do not actually spend most of your time being chased by monsters, setting it apart from (say) Clocktower or Haunting Ground; most of the game is spent exploring the beautiful set pieces the game provides, as the tension gets tighter and tighter and then gah, run! At one point, the tension had become so thick that I actually screamed when the monster suddenly appeared, the only horror game that has yet managed to do that to me. The first person perspective works well to immerse you in the game; the puzzles give you something to focus on when you're not hiding from monsters, without every being frustratingly difficult. The story is good, the (few) characters are interesting enough, the voice acting is ... generally pretty solid, although sometimes over done. A really great game.

Simply the best! This game may be considered as the scariest game in the world, since it manage to give me the creeps, and I´m VERY hard to scare, trust me. The game needs to be played in a "pretty" dark room and headset on, or a very good speaker system, but that can´t really match the power of a good headset + this game. You take the role as Daniel in a castle, and as the title suggest you´ve had an amnesia and are ordered to kill a man. But something is after You, and has the same motive as you, except You are it´s victim. You don´t have any weapons and can only hide or you´ll get yourself killed. Willing to take the challenge?

The scariest game in existence. You could not be more scared if you were actually being chased by someone with a knife in real life. Playing this, you'll find yourself screaming at the screen, shouting after your 5th death and quitting after 5 minutes because it's too damn scary. A good buy.

I saw many reviews of this game, they all said the game was really scary and creepy, and looked it up on youtube as always before I buy a game I do that, and it seemed to me that it wasn't that scary at all apart from the commentaries I thought it was suspense only, so I bought the game and tried it out, man I was completly wrong, I started the game with a spirit that it wouldn't scare me, it was broken down just right in the begginning, creepy and a very scary game! Even the soundtrack makes me goosebumps of fear, it's soo intense, I've been looking for a scary game for a long long time, I played many but they were no match for this one! I finally found a game that scares the hell out of me, and I recomend this to all horror fans out there, this is an unmissable game!

Brillantly creepy, the ambience combined with your helplessness manages to create a sense of panic and fear that i haven't real come accross in a game before, which makes this a genuinely scary game. The graphics aren't great and are a bit dated but the atmosphere more than makes up for this. Its best to play this game knowing as little as possible about it before you start.

I took on Amnesia after seeing many playthroughs of it, thinking "I know where everything is, I won't be scared" I was wrong! This game made me yelp and scream (on a livestream I add) I went on to play Dead Space after just 15 minutes of this and I was laughing at how unscary Dead Space was to amnesia!

I was told of this game a long time ago by my brother. He told me that it's the scariest thing he's ever played, but since he's always been a bit of a softy when it comes to horror, I told him to bring it. In this case, he was completely right.

Amnesia is a psychological horror game, not one of those jumps-into-face-giving-a-scare games that one forgets soon enough and aren't really that scary. This game never steps out of the character, you're always in the horror, never allowed a break. It's relentless. And it's awesome, if you've been wanting for a proper horror game for years like I have. Combined with the puzzles, great story telling, awesome gameplay, easily understood controls and awesome game mechanics, this is easily one of my top favourites. Definitely not a waste of money, worth everything and more.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent review

By Heretic777 posted 20th March 2012

Amnesia provides a much-needed break from today's omnipresent first-person shooters (Halo, Call of Duty, etc.). Not only is Daniel, the unfortunate dude that you as a player get to control, unable to go trigger-happy with an assault rifle, he is incapable of defending himself altogether. This creates an entirely new type of game, one which I find just as, if not more, entertaining.

Amnesia's most redeeming quality is its atmosphere. This is without a doubt the scariest video game I have ever played. A few years ago I bought Doom 3 in hopes of being legitimately scared while gaming. Doom was slightly nerve-racking at times, but I always found myself comforted by the fact that if anything came at me, I could fill it with lead, plasma, or the teeth of a chainsaw. Amnesia provides no such comfort, which is what makes it so fantastic. Another difference is the way in which the game affects you. Doom 3 achieves its scariness via dismembered corpses, splattered viscera and gore, flickering lights, evil laughs, and enemies that spawn right in front of your face. Amnesia has a much more psychological effect, one that fills you with a cold, palpable sense of dread that makes it difficult to reach for the next door handle.

Playing this game in a dark room with earphones and a real desire to be filled with terror and apprehension (as twisted as that may seem) will immerse you in a world unlike any you have experienced. Within the first 15 minutes of playing this, I found myself clenching my teeth in fear, inhaling deeply before entering each new room. Unlike during a horror movie, you are in control, and you must react to the sudden breathing from around the corner, the horrified shrieks of an unnamed woman, or the shadowy menace smashing through your makeshift barricade.

To cut to the chase, I love everything about this game. All of its components, the limited oil for your only lantern, for example, make it one of the most amazing PC games in a while. The product itself is flawless also. It comes in a typical DVD case with a cover, and installed on my computer within minutes without a hitch. If you are in for a highly entertaining scare, I strongly recommend that you purchase this game.

This game was the first horror game i have played on the PC. I have to say it was a truly terrifying experience which required skill, strategy and pure perseverance to complete. Quite a few times i felt like giving up but continuing made me feel like i had achieved something. Immersing yourself in the story and game is a very important part of the game and makes every move you make seem much more realistic.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent reason to buy it

This is one of those few games that can be called Horror Games and let's be honest it's really hard to say this game is scary and for many developers just adding disturbing creatures give them the reason to say its a horror games or just adding cheap jump scares. But this game..... it actually WORKS ITS REAL HORROR posses all the elements to be called a real horror game (Atmosphere, story). If you are looking for a unique experience then this is our game.

Just a quick note: Follow the instructions in the opening, it's the best way to play the game.

I got this game for free with blue coins and I sure am happy I did. This game is really fun and scary, its good to play it in the dark with headphones so you can really get into it. The story is your character who awakens and seems to have been drugged and has to survive in a castle/building. Pick this game up and you will not be sad, its awesome. Make sure to download the patch which is include, makes the great game even better. 5 out of 5 stars.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent review

By drayn posted 6th September 2011

This one has one of the best and scariest atmospheres I have ever felt in an game. Unlike in many other horror games your character is rather weak, both physically and mentally. This means your only option is to run and hide from the enemies you face, which works really well, creating some truly intense and horrific moments. The sound effects are top-notch and contribute a lot to the scary atmosphere of this game. The plot which unfolds mostly from diary notes scattered around the scenes is also pretty decent.

In addition to dodging enemies the player has to solve some rather simple puzzles, which I personally would have liked to see being a bit more complex and hard-core. Also if you happen to get killed it doesn´t really matter all that much, as you get to continue from pretty much the same place where you died. Theres no denying that this game was pretty easy and short, at least when it came to the mechanics of the game. But as the developers say you should do your best to try and immerse in the boots of the main character and the game-world, to get the most out of this one.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent review

By zenbatou posted 24th July 2011

Easily the most frightening game in years. By taking away the player's ability to simply destroy anything remotely threatening the tension quickly becomes a very real feeling.

The sound design is simply superb, adding tons of atmosphere. The sound of your character grinding his teeth while stumbling through the dark and being chased by sounds ranging from screams to churning winds and footsteps that seem to match yours is a true masterwork in design.

The story is superbly delivered, and the ending alone is worth the price of admission. While this game isn't terribly long the experience is unforgettable.

Finished the game in 2 weeks (on and off). Short and sweet but il have to say, that was one immersive nightmarish experience. Its like watching a scary movie and if you want to be in one, this is it. I personally like the story behind it, and its not yer run of the mill haunted house, the plot is actually interesting - is the illuminati involved, the occult, freemasons? Play it. Its a good experience and its one of those games that deserves to be talked about afterwards.

There's no doubt this is a creepy game, because I too have trouble playing it for extended periods of time.

Unfortunately, the brain crunching when I was in the dark actually started to get on my nerves during the mid section of the game, and I haven't bothered to finish it since.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent review

By gold_dragoon posted 5th June 2011

Amnesia is a horror game that knows just the right way to scare you. Unlike most other horror games (or movies) Amnesia does not rely on cheap jump scares to keep you on the edge of your seat. Amnesia uses great sound and environmental design to build tension and keep you scared even when there is no real danger in the game world. Your character has no real means to defend himself so you must rely on your ability to run, hide, and remain hidden from the games creepy experimental monsters to advance. This raises the tension and the fright of encountering new enemies.

The game also has a fairly good story to go along with the fantastic environmental design. Your character wakes up amnesia (hence the name) in a Prussian castle with only a note from himself telling him that he must kill the lord of the castle in his inner sanctum. The game is very much inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft and the story fairly well lives up to its inspiration. All the voice acting is pretty well done too, making the furthering of the story one of main reasons to keep you playing way after you have been frightened to the point of almost quitting.

Overall Amnesia is a very good indie horror game that will last you about 7 hours. I think that is well worth the asking price.

This is a game that I started, got into for a few hours and then lost all interest for months. Then I decided to finish it and discovered what a gem it really is. The atmosphere is amazing both in terms of sounds and visuals. I like that combat is not an option (not even the pipe wielding from Penumbra) so you are forced to hide and risk your sanity to avoid death. The puzzles were logical, the plot and locations are creepy, and the tension is high. It is one of the few games I've played where I'd let out a genuine sigh of relief when reaching a new area. As the opening text reminds the player it is a game to be experienced not played to win

Amnesia: The Dark Descent review

While the games graphics may be dated, that ambiance more than makes up for anything this lacks. The helpless feeling you get when you're being chased by something that wants to kill you and you have nothing to defend yourself with except to hide is beyond any I've ever felt in a game.

Frictional Games has done it again.

By Slobes posted 13th April 2011

I like the idea that you don't have weapons and must hide from enemies. Dark, spooky atmosphere make this game exciting. Puzzles to solve along the way arent that hard but some may be a little more difficult than others. The way the story is told as you go which is unique. Overall a good game except it wasn't that hard and the ending was not worth it. I was expecting more at the end but I would recommend this game to others.

What i liked most in this game was the atmosphere. I wasnt scared most of the time but the environment and pace were great. Also an easy game. The story not that genuine ,generally i dont like fiction. I think this studio is capable of very impressive games, if they find a more genuine and mature story to tell. Nobody will be disappointed from this game , a must buy.

By Silenthaunt posted 1st January 2011

I found the storyline and atmosphere very intense. It's a shame the story ends in such a way that a sequel would be impossible: I would have very much liked to see another Amnesia.

I'm gonna go with the above negative comment and say how much it was frustrating to have the enemies go away once they've killed you. This has ruined it a little.

I was done with the game in about 6-7 hours. Worth your ten bucks, but I dare say the ride was too short. Replay value is close to nil. The personalizing option is there, but as of now it seems no good mod has been released.

Frictional with Penumbra set the land-mark in Horror Adventure Survival gaming everyone else in the industry is lusting after. And only very few come only close to.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent review

By Zalmoxis posted 29th December 2010

Amnesia is one of those games that serve as a demonstration of how much of the innovative potential in the gaming industry lies in those many little, creative indie studios. I'm not going to delve into things that have already been mentioned a gazillion times in other positive reviews, we all know it, this game produces a great atmosphere and actually really manages to keep the pulse high (given you have your lights off and the tv isn't running in the background! :P), other than the kind of action games that simply throw some scares at you that you quickly get used to - not so in Amnesia. The last time a game managed to play the player's emotional harp like this was when the Looking Glass studios still existed.

Amnesia also shows how Frictional Games learnt from some quirks of the Penumbra games. As interesting as the interface concept of Penumbra is, it does get wonky every now and then. Amnesia's interface works much smoother, it has become less tedious to keep control even of hectic situations without distracting the player and hurting immersion.

Thanks to the release of modding tools (editors for maps and entities among other things) several mods and new stories are available, prolonging the life span of the game. Frictional Games maintain a wiki (wiki.frictionalgames.com) for newcoming modders; hopefully it will encourage more people to add content to Amnesia. This game deserves it. It's definitely fully worth it's price, be it during a special sale or the still very humble full price of only 15 bucks.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent review

Best in years for survival horror fans!

In mainstream gaming, the supposed greats in the genre like resident evil, silent hill or other more popular franchises have become less survival horror and more first or third person shooter in a thriller environment... As an old school fan of horror games, to come across a game like Amnesia is a breath of fresh air! uh, fresh air from a dank, dark dungeon of evil...

This game is actually designed to be scary, those of weak heart probably best not follow the game's own recommendation of playing in the dark with headphones. With the beautiful moody environments and effective sanity breaking effects this game is a pleasure to play! It may not have the most current HD graphics in the gaming world, but with it's moods and detailed environments you won't notice once you get into it.

The game physics are also really well done, the interaction between Daniel and the nightmarish world he is trapped in are some of the most intuitive and useful for the kind of game. It helps drive the reality home when hiding in a closet from some unknown evil, your own knuckles turning white on the mouse in fear you may let go of the door and get caught!

I could go on and on about the interesting story and perfectly themed soundtrack, but that is best discovered in-game while discovering the wonders and horrors of Amnesia. You're not gonna do much better in the modern gaming markets for $20!

So try it out, at least the demo. You won't be disappointed!

Horror, like comedy, is subjective. Many people have been praising Amnesia as one of the scariest games ever released on the PC. I guess I'm in the minority camp of dissenting opinion.

It's true that the game has some very atmospheric design elements to it, but for me, once I realised that there was no punishment for getting spotted and attacked, the aforementioned atmosphere evaporated.

I found it easier to just walk up to the monsters, let them kill me, respawn and then continue on my merry way than to actually play through the game as it was intended.

I was quite disappointed with this title.

Sounds a little bit boring but it's not. although the story is not the strongest point of the game it will keep on edge all the time because of the engaging horror plot. Unfortunately the graphics are not the best around (maybe an intentional choice by the developers to run the game in any machine)but dont let that hold you up from buying this game. The game is very good. This is a superb game. The graphics are phenomenal.

The storyline is both simplistic and exquisitely complex at the same time.

I can't really ever say I was frightened playing a game before this.

I really felt scared at times whilst engaged in this game.

It requires bravery to branch out into this type of adventure game as it is quite different from traditional point and click.

The reward,however,far exceeds the risk.

Never once did the onset of boredom set in.

The player needs to utilise reason as much as they need to run and hide.

This makes for an excellent balance.

I experienced no glitches whilst playing this game.

At times the game was reminiscent of the David Parker Ray horror played out in the media.

Games like this show people how depraved the human species can become under certain circumstances.

I like the fact that several different types of ending finales were utilised.

Overall I would rate this game as an A+

Games of this quality are exceedingly rare.

I would tell anyone; Get the game, you will be thoroughly pleased from the moment you start to the end.

Dark Descent plays very much like its previous games (penumbra series). If you enjoyed any of those games you will appreciate the upgraded story telling and atmosphere.

In the old games you could sit in the dark and be safe. Now every time you start to lose sanity, so running from monsters keeps you on your toes.

But what makes this game unique is the physics engine the game. Solving puzzles takes thinking, rather than taking item A to position B.

End of story, buy this game, theres nothing quite like what Frictional Games produces.
