"... I completed the level and was reduced to disturbingly orgasmic cries. I haven’t felt as good with a videogame, in that direct physical way, for quite a while."

- Kieron Gillen, Rock, Paper, Shotgun

VVVVVV is a retro styled 2D platformer by Terry Cavanagh, creator of dozens of free games. You play as the fearless leader of a team of dimension exploring scientists who inadvertently crash, and are separated. The game involves exploring the strange world you've found yourself in, and reuniting your friends.

VVVVVV explores one simple game mechanic: you cannot jump - instead, you reverse your own gravity at the press of a button. The game focuses on playing with this mechanic in a variety of interesting ways.

The game is designed not to artificially gate your progress. In VVVVVV there are no locks, no powerups, no switches, nothing to stop you progressing except the challenges themselves.

VVVVVV review

A 2D platform game where all you can do is move left, move right, and flip gravity. This is more intuitive than it probably sounds as creates interesting challenges.

The retro style is cute and colourful, and the music fits in well. Although I found the that the music could get repetitive and irrating in areas where I died a lot. Death is frequent but there are lots of check-points and respawn is intantaneous.

Overall a fun little game.

What gaming is all about

This game is a good example of perfection through simplicity. The input scheme consists of just four buttons, and there is only one gameplay mechanic (reverse gravity). Yet, the game is completely engrossing. It captures the perfect balance of difficulty (which is very high) with playability (dying just sends you back to the last continue point, and these points are everywhere). If you have an hour or so to kill, VVVVVV is the perfect way to do it.

Also, kudos for the retro feel. I use VVVVVV as an example to my son of how games used to be in the good old days.

This is the best "pull you back in time, beat you over the head, play-over-and-over" again game I've ever played. It's instantly addictive and, if you want more a challenge, there are a number of trinkets lying around all over the world. The game has a great sense of exploration and provides a comfortable feeling of warmth and joy. It's clear the developer(s?) enjoyed making this game and that he or she possessed a passion for this medium. At this price, it's hard to say no and it's so frequently on sale that there's no reason you shouldn't try this game.

Don't let the retro graphics in this game fool you into thinking it belongs to Miniclip or Newgrounds. No, VVVVVV is of a different league, despite having a slight resemblance to a Flash game - at least, that was my initial impression.

VVVVVV is very charming, and will keep you hooked from start to end. The levels are nicely varied and keep things fresh. Certain puzzles are hard, one in particular bordering on monitor-smashing, but they are not compulsory to completing the game's main storyline. I shall avoid spoilers and let you discover more about the game, should you choose to buy it, but VVVVVV manages to hammer every single nail right on the dot, from the sheer pleasantness of the game (music, graphics) to the moments where you find yourself to caught up to bother about Real Life (TM).

It is also highly replayable, as once you have completed the game's main storyline + unlocked all the extras by collecting all the shiny trinkets, you are treated to new game modes such as a Flip Mode and Time Trials. In a nutshell, at only $7, you won't regret your purchase.

Simply put, one of the most enjoyable platformers I've ever played.

You can make your own mind up about the graphics; personally, I love them. It's amazing how expressive those little two-expression faces are, and there's a genuine sense of warmth and character.

Most importantly though, the platforming is expertly designed. The levels are a series of variations on the core gravity-flipping mechanic, with generous checkpoints meaning that failure just means having another go, rather than slogging back through familiar areas. The degree of difficulty was perfect for me: I could complete the main plot with a bit of effort but very little frustration, while gathering all of the aptly-named "Shiny Trinkets" was at times very challenging, and ultimately highly satisfying, but never overwhelming. For those with greater skills and patience than me, there are extra challenges such as timed runs of the levels.

The game has a great sense of humour, but never beats you over the head with it. It's funny, warm-hearted, and challenging but never cruel.
