Civilization IV Complete Edition

Won't run - Black screen

By Theemonay10 posted 24th May 2012

I have downloaded Civ 4 complete edition for my new laptop and everytime I try to start it, the game starts to load then takes me to a black screen. The only way I can get out of the screen is by hitting enter/esc/space, but the game never starts and runs. Any help?
Thanks

It is normally best to post your pc specs in a case like this. What is your vid card? Are your video drivers up to date? Have you tried to right click and run as admin?

Also (no edit feature) alot of laptops dont have proper hardware for gaming.

You say it is a new laptop, so I assume it uses Windows 7. Being Civilization IV a not so new title, you might need to install an older version of DirectX libraries. Here is the link for DirectX 9: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35

Oh, and if during the installation of DirectX it offers you Bing bar, you can decline, because it is not needed.

I switched the settings to run with Windows XP compatable which I'm assuming is the same as the directx downloads. I also tried running as admin, and I assume the video card is up to date and it still isn't working. I deleted it off my computer and I'm going to re-download it tomorrow and I will try those things. Thanks for the help.

So you did not install DirectX 9, right? Win XP compatibility mode is not a substitute for it.

directx worked. Thanks so much
